Long-Distance Move Berlin – Neuchâtel NE: Customs Route & Process

Neuchâtel guide
From Berlin to Neuchâtel: what must be done before the border
Customs, journey, arrival
A move to Neuchâtel (Neuenburg in German) – meaning here the city of Neuchâtel in the canton of the same name – takes you out of the EU: Switzerland has its own customs rules. Household effects (Übersiedlungsgut) remain duty-free if you have used them yourself for at least six months and continue to use them; for this you fill in Form 18.44 and enclose an inventory list. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and plan the route of around 990 km so that the papers are complete at the border crossing.
With our private move, we pack furniture and boxes, number them to match the inventory list and drive with a stopover in line with EU driving time rules. More about the scope of services can be found under Private move. For the flat in Neuchâtel, you order signs for the moving parking space from the city – at least 96 hours in advance. We give you the fixed price after the survey in Berlin.

How we prepare the journey to Switzerland
Papers, packing list, breaks
For a move to Neuchâtel, what matters most is that the inventory list, Form 18.44 and the load match. We number boxes, record furniture and electrical appliances and plan the journey from Berlin-Moabit with breaks in line with the driving time rules. Your household goods are covered under the HGB (liability €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. You receive the fixed price after the survey; destinations in Europe can be found under international move.

Questions about moving to Neuchâtel
Customs and formalities when moving to Switzerland
As Switzerland is not part of the EU, customs formalities have to be completed for a move to Neuchâtel. For your household effects you fill in Form 18.44 and enclose an inventory list. Household goods are duty-free if you have used them yourself for at least six months and continue to use them at your new residence; newer items must be declared separately.
We number the boxes to match the list and load so that a check at the border does not throw the whole load into disarray. General information on the route and driving times can be found under Long-distance moves.
Arriving in Neuchâtel: residents' registration and process
Neuchâtel lies on Lake Neuchâtel, and the official language is French. As a new resident you register at the Contrôle des habitants within 14 days; this also initiates the residence permit. You must take out Swiss health insurance within three months of taking up residence.
Your move begins with a free survey in Berlin, followed by a fixed-price quote and scheduling. On moving day we take care of packing and transport; you prepare the customs declaration with our inventory list.

From Berlin to Switzerland and right across Germany
We come from Berlin and drive throughout Germany and abroad, for example to Lake Neuchâtel. Destinations in Germany can be found in the locations overview, long routes under Long-distance moves.
Neuchâtel NE: parking reservation for moving day
"Neuenburg" here means the city of Neuchâtel in the canton of Neuchâtel, not Neuenburg am Rhein in Germany. The City of Neuchâtel offers temporary signage for moves: anyone moving into or out of a flat in the city can order signs from the Sécurité publique office that reserve parking spaces on moving day. The offer therefore applies both to moving into and moving out of a flat in the city.
According to the city, transporting the signs costs 100 francs, plus 5 francs per sign; at least two signs must be ordered. The request must be received at least 96 hours in advance, not counting weekends and public holidays. It is made via the online form "SP – Signalisation routière pour un déménagement" or by phone to Sécurité publique on 032 717 57 00 (from Germany +41 32 717 57 00). So plan the moving date so that the deadline does not become tight before a weekend.
If you want to arrive from Berlin without the rush, plan drivers and breaks in line with EU driving time rules; the essentials about the route are in the guide Long-distance move to Switzerland. We organise the space outside your front door in Berlin with a parking restriction zone.
Neuchâtel NE: registration at the Contrôle des habitants
The Contrôle des habitants (residents' registration office) of the City of Neuchâtel (Rue de l’Hôtel-de-Ville 1, 2000 Neuchâtel, tel. 032 717 72 20) accepts your papers; according to the city, the statutory deadline is 14 days. It is open on Mondays 8.30–12 and 13.30–17, Tuesdays 7.30–12, Wednesdays 8.30–12 and 13.30–17, Thursdays 8.30–12 and 13.30–18 and Fridays 8.30–15 without a break.
For EU and EFTA nationals coming from abroad and working for more than three months, the city lists: a valid original passport or identity card, a current civil status document, an employment contract and proof of accommodation. If you are not the holder of the tenancy agreement, a template for the "autorisation de logement" is available for download on the page. The certificate of residence costs 10 francs. If you own a vehicle, you also report your settlement to the Service des automobiles.
If you are coming from another municipality, according to the city you first report your departure to your previous municipality. There are also reception counters in Corcelles-Cormondrèche (Mondays and Thursdays), Peseux (Mondays and Wednesdays) and Valangin (Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings). The city's pages are in French. A similar situation on Lake Geneva is described in Long-distance move to Montreux.
