Neuenburg am Rhein for Newcomers: Four Districts Where Three Countries Meet

Neuenburg Newcomers' Guide
Neuenburg am Rhein: A Small Town on the Border with Alsace
First Weeks, First Routines
Neuenburg am Rhein lies in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, halfway between Freiburg im Breisgau and Basel, directly opposite the Alsatian municipality of Chalampé. The town consists of the main town and the villages of Steinenstadt, Grißheim and Zienken. Its history shapes the townscape: in 1704, Louis XIV had Neuenburg completely destroyed, and in 1940 it was the first German town to be completely destroyed in the Second World War. For new residents, this means many post-war buildings, short distances and a border you hardly notice in everyday life.
In the first weeks, registration counts above all: according to the town, it is due within two weeks of moving in at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro), by appointment only and with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. Families should start the central nursery pre-registration early. We take care of the move: we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive all the way to the Upper Rhine. Route and process are described on our page Moving from Berlin to Neuenburg.

How We Plan the Move to Neuenburg
Date, Access, Parking Restriction
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to the Upper Rhine. Before moving day, we clarify access, floor and space outside the building, in the main town as well as in Steinenstadt or Grißheim; if necessary, you apply to the town for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). Planning, packing, transport and assembly all come from a single provider, and your belongings are covered under the HGB. We quote the fixed price after the survey. What
newcomers should sort out early
According to Wikipedia, around 4,000 people work in industry, trade and retail in Neuenburg, plus commuters to Freiburg and Basel. If you work in Switzerland, you need a cross-border commuter permit, which is issued by the canton where you work. If you are moving from Switzerland, clarify the customs papers for your household goods in advance, because Switzerland is not an EU country. We plan the transport as a home removal from Berlin.

Questions About Living in Neuenburg am Rhein
The Four Districts of Neuenburg am Rhein
With almost 9,000 inhabitants, the main town is by far the largest district; the town hall, station and most shops are here. The “Im Stein” estate, founded in the 1950s, also belongs to the main town. The former Wuhrlochpark has been called “Stadtpark am Wuhrloch” since the 2022 State Garden Show. To the south lies Steinenstadt, and to the north Grißheim and Zienken; the three villages joined the town between 1971 and 1975.
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here. Compare offers yourself and pay attention to how far away the station, school and shops are. People who work in Switzerland often look in the main town, with its short route to the motorway. For the move into your new flat, we take care of parking restriction planning and furniture assembly.
The border is on your doorstep: the road and railway bridge opened in 1963 takes you to Chalampé in Alsace, and the Rhine bridge near Ottmarsheim connects France to the A5. If you work or shop in Alsace, your routes are correspondingly short.
Working, School and Leisure in Neuenburg
Industry, trade and retail provide around 4,000 jobs in Neuenburg. For families, there is the Rheinschule primary school with branch sites in Grißheim, Zienken and Steinenstadt, the Mathias-von-Neuenburg-Schule (Werkrealschule and Realschule) and the Kreisgymnasium Neuenburg. There is also a German-French nursery and a cross-border adult education centre, which is run by an association under French law and belongs to the adult education associations of both countries. In your free time, cycle paths along the Rhine, the Stadtpark am Wuhrloch and trips into the Black Forest and the Vosges beckon.
