Tilburg: from textile town to university and cultural city

Neighbourhoods, work, offices

Unsere Firma Tilburg at a glance: the Centrum, the Piushaven, old neighbourhoods such as Korvel, the Reeshof in the west and the villages on the edge.

Tilburg lies in the middle of the province of Noord-Brabant, between Breda to the west and ’s-Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven to the east. The city grew out of around eight small villages, whose names live on in neighbourhoods such as Korvel, Broekhoven, Oerle or ’t Goirke, and until the 20th century it was one of the major textile centres of the Netherlands. Today the municipality, including the villages of Udenhout, Berkel-Enschot and Biezenmortel, has around 230,000 inhabitants. Around the station the Spoorzone with the Spoorpark has been developed, and on the canal south of the centre the Piushaven with new apartments. In 1847 King Willem II had a palace built here, which is now part of the town hall complex; the football club is also named after him. After the crisis in the textile and cigar industries in the 1980s, structural change led to new growth. For your move this means: period buildings with steep stairs alongside new builds with lifts.

We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Tilburg via the A2 and Venlo – around 684 kilometres. Whether a flat in the Centrum, a terraced house in the Reeshof or a house in Berkel-Enschot: we handle packing, transport and furniture assembly as a long-distance move; no customs declaration is needed within the EU. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and our liability for your goods is under the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance is possible. More on the scope under private move.

the move to Tilburg

We are happy to advise you on all questions about the transport; further destinations are shown in the overview of our service areas.

Centrum, old village cores, Reeshof: Tilburg's districts

Tilburg has no medieval core; instead, buildings from the heyday of the textile industry shape the Centrum: King Willem II's Paleis, the Heuvel as the nightlife centre and the Spoorzone by the station with the Spoorpark and the 013 music venue nearby. To the south, the Piushaven, a former coal harbour, has been turned into a residential and nightlife area with new apartments since 2012. All around lie the old village cores such as Korvel, Broekhoven, ’t Goirke or ’t Heike with workers' houses and period buildings.

In the west lies the Reeshof, built from around 1980 onwards and today, with around 44,000 inhabitants, a large district with greenery, schools and shopping centres; between the city and the Reeshof lie the Wandelbos and the Oude Warande. The municipality also includes the villages of Berkel-Enschot, Udenhout and Biezenmortel on the edge of the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen national park. Altogether Tilburg has 13 districts.

Working, studying and living in Tilburg

Tilburg has a diverse economy: in the service sector, the insurers Interpolis and CZ and a bank are based here, plus industry such as Fujifilm, printing companies and the Tesla plant, where vehicles for Europe are assembled. Tilburg University and the universities of applied sciences Fontys and Avans shape the city; the housing market is therefore considered in high demand. We do not quote rents here because they vary greatly by neighbourhood and fittings.

For leisure there are the Leijpark, the Textielmuseum, Museum De Pont and the 013. Every year in July the Tilburgse Kermis takes place, the largest funfair in the Netherlands with over a million visitors. North of the city is the Efteling theme park, and to the south-east the Beekse Bergen safari park. By train Tilburg is connected with Breda, ’s-Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven.

Access to Tilburg's Binnenstad: Verkeersontheffing and loading times

The Gemeente Tilburg regulates the pedestrian zone of the Binnenstad strictly. According to the Gemeente, the zone may be entered by motorised traffic (maximum 8 tonnes and/or 11 m long) daily from 06:00 to 11:00 for loading and unloading. Work, deliveries and moves should take place within this time window; outside it, access is not permitted.

According to the Gemeente, you need a Verkeersontheffing (traffic exemption) if you have to drive or park a car or lorry where it is prohibited. It is not required for loading and unloading on the carriageway. Exemptions for the pedestrian zone are only granted to certain groups, such as residents or businesses with their own parking space, and for construction, maintenance and repair work. An Ontheffing is never granted for parking in front of an entrance or exit.

The Gemeente states the fees as follows: up to 13 days €26.55, 14 days to 3 months €53.15. Applications are made online via winkel.tilburg.nl, and payment is digital. The page does not state an application deadline in weeks. Also note: according to the Gemeente, parking vehicles longer than 6.00 m and/or higher than 2.40 m is not permitted in Tilburg.

Our long-distance moving guide for Tilburg covers the route from Berlin.

Zero-emission zone and registration: Tilburg after the move

Since 1 January 2025, a zero-emission zone (zero-emissiezone) has applied in Tilburg in the area between the Ringbanen. According to the Gemeente, only lorries built in 2017 or later and vans of at least emission class 5 may enter; from 2030 only zero-emission vehicles will be allowed. You apply for exemptions via the RDW. The page does not mention whether foreign number plates are affected; check your vehicle with the Kentekencheck on opwegnaarzes.nl.

For registration (Inschrijving in the BRP): according to rijksoverheid.nl, for a stay of more than 4 months you must register within 5 days of arrival; you then receive the citizen service number (BSN). The Gemeente Tilburg requires an appointment booked online and the questionnaire "Vestigen in Nederland" (settling in the Netherlands).

You should bring:

  • a valid travel document per person
  • the tenancy or purchase agreement or the main occupant's declaration of consent
  • foreign certificates (e.g. birth certificate), no more than 6 months old; the Gemeente accepts German certificates without a sworn translation

Everything about everyday life locally can be found in the guide to living in Tilburg. The Gemeente Tilburg can be reached on 14 013. According to the Gemeente, later moves within the Netherlands are reported online with DigiD, from four weeks before to no later than five days after moving day.

Always one step ahead.
