Living in Steyr: Stadtplatz Tabor, Ennsleite and more

Living in Steyr
Steyr: iron town at the confluence of two rivers
Neighbourhoods, work, offices
Steyr lies at the confluence of the Enns and the Steyr and, after Linz and Wels, is the third-largest city in Upper Austria, with just under 38,000 inhabitants. The Stadtplatz is considered one of the best-preserved old-town ensembles in the German-speaking world; the city still lives from industry today. The largest employer is the engine plant of BMW Motoren GmbH, alongside others such as SKF Österreich, Steyr Automotive in the former lorry plant and ZF Steyr.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Steyr – around 636 kilometres via Prague and Linz. Our private move covers packing, transport and furniture assembly, whether on the Stadtplatz, on the Tabor or in Münichholz. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and our liability for your goods is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). How the journey itself works is described in our long-distance move service.

Your quote for the move to Steyr
Fixed price after a survey, access sorted
With our fixed-price quote you know before moving day what your move to Steyr will cost. Tell us the destination address: in Steyrdorf and on the Stadtplatz the lanes are narrow, while the Ennsleite and Resthof have larger housing estates. We then plan the vehicle and access accordingly.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we plan your move-in in Steyr
Access, floors, date
Steyr is built on several terraces: down below the old town with the Stadtplatz, above it Berggasse and Münichholz, at the top Vogelsang and the Tabor. Many routes are linked by stairways – the Taborstiege has 243 steps. For your move we therefore ask precisely about the floor, lift and access, and check with the municipal authority (Magistrat) whether an exemption under § 45 StVO is needed for the pedestrian zone or a loading zone. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Call us on 01625978461 – we will advise you free of charge and without obligation.

Getting
to know Steyr before the move
Before the move to Steyr, the main question is where to live. For statistical purposes the Magistrat divides the city into 19 zones, from the inner city via Steyrdorf and Wehrgraben to Münichholz, Gleink and Christkindl. Anyone studying at the Fachhochschule Campus Steyr or working at one of the industrial firms often chooses by commute; trains run regularly to Linz via St. Valentin. We bring your furniture to any of these addresses and, on request, give you tips on the registration office and the flat handover.

Frequently asked questions about living in Steyr
From the inner city to Münichholz
The inner city (Innere Stadt) with the Stadtplatz lies down below where the Steyr flows into the Enns – baroque façades and short distances, but also a short-stay parking zone and pedestrian areas. Across the Steyr is Steyrdorf, and by the river lies the Wehrgraben with its old canals and factory buildings, today home to the Museum Arbeitswelt among others. On the other bank of the Enns is Ennsdorf, and above it the Ennsleite with larger housing estates.
On the upper terrace lie Tabor and Resthof; since 2020 the Tabor panorama lift has connected Michaelerplatz with the Taborhöhe. Münichholz in the north was incorporated in 1938, built up with around 2,500 flats and has its own weekly market. On the edge of the city are Gleink with its former abbey church and Christkindl with its baroque pilgrimage church. Which area suits you depends on whether the old town or a housing estate with parking matters more to you.
Working, studying and commuting in Steyr
Steyr is an industrial city. Since the 1980s the largest employer has been the engine plant of BMW Motoren GmbH; in addition there are SKF Österreich (rolling bearings), Steyr Automotive, ZF Steyr, the forging machine manufacturer GFM, the photo retail chain Hartlauer and the software company BMD. The regional hospital (Landeskrankenhaus) and the Fachhochschule Campus Steyr are further major institutions. We do not quote specific rents here because they vary greatly by location, year of construction and fittings; current offers can be found on the Austrian property portals.
Trains run regularly to Linz via St. Valentin with connections to the Westbahn line, plus Postbus coaches. By car, the B309 has linked the city to the A1 West motorway since 2010. Within the city, the city bus runs on ten routes. This makes Steyr easy to combine with a job in Linz or the surrounding area.
Guide prices for your move to Steyr
We rely on fair and honest prices. We move a 1-room flat from €354, a 2-room flat from €615, a 3-room flat from €915 and a 4-room flat from €1,344. What determines the price for Steyr
The price of your move depends on several factors: the volume of your goods, the distance (from €3.90/km) and the floor and lift at your home. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also affect the calculation. Extra services such as furniture assembly or a part load also affect the final total.

Parking restrictions and access in Steyr: applications to the Magistrat and parking rules on the Stadtplatz
In Steyr, the Magistrat is responsible for a parking restriction on moving day. According to the city, stopping and parking bans are issued by ordinance; before the signs are put up there is an investigation procedure in which the police, among others, are consulted. The Magistrat does not have a dedicated page just for moving-day parking restrictions. However, the "Verkehrsregeln" (traffic rules) page lists exemptions under § 45 StVO, including driving in pedestrian zones and exemptions from loading zones.
According to the city, you apply via an online form and the decision arrives by post. For exemptions under § 45 StVO the Magistrat states €14.30 in application fees plus administrative charges depending on the type of exemption. The city gives no lead time, so ask the department for district administration early (tel. +43 7252 575, town hall, Stadtplatz 27).
On the Stadtplatz itself, according to the city of Steyr, a short-stay parking zone applies with a maximum parking time of 1 hour; parking costs 80 cents per half hour, Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 08:00 to 12:00. The city gives no online information on access times to the pedestrian zone and refers you to the town hall. Read more about planning in our overview of the parking restriction zone.
Meldezettel, registration office and short-stay parking zones: Steyr after moving in
Anyone moving into Steyr must, according to the city, register within three days, either at the registration office (Meldeamt) or online with ID Austria. In person you need an official photo ID and the completed registration form (Meldezettel), which the accommodation provider must sign. For foreign nationals the city lists a travel document as required; this also applies to German citizens.
According to the Magistrat, the registration office in the town hall at Stadtplatz 27 is open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 12:00. In the afternoon (13:30 to 16:00) appointments are available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays only by prior arrangement. The Magistrat generally recommends booking an appointment to avoid waiting; the switchboard can be reached on +43 7252 575.
Important for your car: the city operates the paid short-stay parking zones 1a and 1b (inner city), 2 (Ennsdorf), 3 (Wehrgraben), 4 (Steyrdorf) and 5 (Tabor Süd). According to the city, a residents' parking permit costs €61.10 for one year and €101.20 for two years.
If you arrive with the removal lorry, note the tolls: according to oesterreich.gv.at, the vignette applies to motor vehicles up to 3.5 t and the GO toll to vehicles over 3.5 t. Further information on the route can be found in our article Moving to Austria: customs formalities and process.
