Moving to Biel/Bienne – neighbourhoods between the lake and the Jura

Neighbourhoods & costs

Unsere Firma travels from Berlin-Moabit for your move to Biel/Bienne and plans the parking card, customs and registration together with you.

Biel/Bienne is the largest bilingual city in Switzerland: German and French have equal status, and city web pages and forms are available in both languages. With around 57,000 residents it is the country's tenth-largest city and the most important centre of the watch industry – home to the headquarters of the Swatch Group, the Omega manufacture and a Rolex production site. The city lies at the north-eastern end of Lake Biel at the foot of the Jura. Anyone moving here will find older buildings in the Old Town as well as new builds in the residential districts.

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and plan your move to Biel according to the city's rules – from the narrow lanes of the Old Town to the residential districts of Mett or Madretsch. Whether you are coming for a job in the watch industry or to study at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH): we discuss how your private move will run during the survey and then quote a fixed price. Customs and the route from Berlin are described under International move.

How we plan your move to Biel

Planning according to the city's rules

We are a removal company from Berlin-Moabit and travel all the way to Biel/Bienne for your move. During the survey we clarify whether your address is in a pedestrian zone, where the van can stand in the blue zone and whether there are stairs without a lift. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available. We quote the price as a fixed price after the survey, with no renegotiation on moving day.

Packing Service

We number the boxes to match the inventory list that customs wants to see when you move to Biel/Bienne – with our packing service.

Office Move

Office equipment is subject to different customs rules from household goods; we plan the moving days for an office move to Biel/Bienne accordingly.

Senior Move

When parents move to Lake Biel, we build breaks and assembly on arrival day in Biel/Bienne into the plan – with our senior move.

Furniture Transport

We carry heavy items, padded and secured, into Old Town houses without a lift in Biel/Bienne with our furniture transport.
BEFORE MOVING DAY

What to prepare in Biel

In Biel/Bienne the parking card office handles parking and the residents' registration office handles registration. If you clarify both before moving day and have the bulky waste stickers ready for anything you have cleared out, you save time on the day. The city does not mention a specific rule for reserved moving spaces.

01

Blue zone day card

According to the city, the day card for the blue zone costs CHF 7 and is only valid in blue-marked spaces; buy it online straight after parking.
02

Pedestrian zone

A loading time window applies in Nidaugasse, Marktgasse and the Old Town; outside it you need a special permit.
03

Registration within 14 days

Register within 14 days – from within Switzerland via eUmzug, from abroad with the migration office (Dienststelle Migration), Neuengasse 28.
04

Bulky waste stickers

The city collects small bulky waste up to 18 kg twice a week with stickers; a sofa needs 2 stickers per seat, a mattress 3.
05

Extra bulky waste

For larger quantities, arrange the collection by phone with the road inspectorate (Strasseninspektorat); charges are based on the work involved.
06

Keep customs in mind

Coming from Germany, you declare your household goods at the border with form 18.44 and an inventory list; new goods separately.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Move affordably with a part load

Share the cargo space, cut the costs

For a shared-flat room, a studio or a few pieces of furniture to Biel/Bienne, a shared load can be cheaper, because your belongings travel with other consignments. Delivery is within a time window rather than on a fixed date; for customs you still need your own inventory list.

Everything
for your move

Everything around your move

A move to Biel/Bienne comes with a few particular features. Many houses in the Old Town have narrow stairwells and no lift, and often the only options there are carrying or a furniture lift. In districts such as Bözingen, Mett or Madretsch, there are new builds with underground car parks as well as older buildings. Because the city does not mention a specific rule for reserved moving spaces, we check with the parking card office before the date where the van may stand.

Planning and deadlines

Check the parking card, register within 14 days, health insurance within three months – that keeps your private move, senior move or student move to Biel/Bienne straightforward.

Stairs, lifts, carrying distances

With our packing service, padded furniture transport and a small transport for the last few metres, even Old Town houses without a lift in Biel/Bienne can be moved into cleanly.

Costs and special cases

An office move, company relocation or public authority move has its own customs rules; single items travel to Biel/Bienne more cheaply by shared load or furniture taxi.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Biel/Bienne

Costs, neighbourhoods, language, university and Old Town – answered briefly.
The cost depends on the size of the flat, volume, floor, carrying distance and extra services; from Germany, the route, the heavy vehicle charge and border clearance are added. Starting prices are shown above. After a free survey you receive a fixed price, so no items are left open. Call us for a quote.

Neighbourhoods of Biel/Bienne at a glance

The Old Town on the slope above the centre has narrow lanes and many houses without a lift – charming, but demanding for moves. Below it lies the Neustadt (north and south) around the station, with rented flats within walking distance of the trains. Mett and Madretsch in the south and east are mixed residential districts with older and newer buildings, while Bözingen on the eastern edge of the city borders the Bözingenfeld with its industry and the Tissot Arena.

Vingelz lies right on Lake Biel on the slope of the Jura, and the Rebberg neighbourhood above the city. Then there is the Champagne district in the west. Each neighbourhood has its own access routes and parking rules, which we take into account when planning the move; which one suits you depends on your commute, budget and the language of the school and neighbourhood.

Housing market and everyday life in Biel/Bienne

The housing market in Biel/Bienne is smaller than in Zurich or Bern. Flats near the lake or in renovated Old Town houses are more sought after, while the districts in the east and south offer more choice. Many people value the direct train connections to Bern and French-speaking Switzerland and move to Biel for that reason.

For newcomers it pays to start looking early via Swiss property portals or letting agencies. BFH students often find shared-flat rooms near the station. Have an application file with a debt enforcement register extract ready, because good flats go quickly. As soon as your new flat is confirmed, we schedule the moving date to match the handover and plan the access.

Cost overview: what do you pay with us?

With a removal company, transparency matters most. So here are our guide prices: 1-room flats from €339, 2-room flats from €579, 3-room flats from €884, 4-room flats from €1,289. There is no standard price for a house or villa – for these we calculate an individual quote. If you are moving further away, a long-distance move is charged at a price per kilometre from €3.80. Click through to a free survey to secure a binding quote.

What does the price of my move depend on?

First of all, volume counts – the more household goods, the higher the cost. Distance is charged from €3.80/km. A floor without a lift and a required parking restriction zone also increase the effort. Furniture assembly and a shared load are also worth considering as extra services.

Moving to Biel/Bienne: customs, form 18.44 and the parking card office

Biel/Bienne is in Switzerland, so your belongings are cleared on entry. The BAZG names moving your place of residence to Switzerland as the key condition for duty-free import. You must have personally used the items for at least 6 months and continue to use them after import. On entry you present form 18.44.

According to the BAZG, no advance notification is needed; you report directly to the competent customs office during its office hours. Proof of the change of residence can be, for example, deregistration in your country of origin and your employment and tenancy agreements. According to the BAZG, the removal company can also help you determine the weight. Further information can be found in our article Moving to Switzerland: customs formalities and process.

In Biel, the parking card office is responsible for parking (Werkhofstrasse 8, tel. 032 326 18 26, Monday to Friday 8.00 to 11.30 a.m., [email protected]). On its "Parking cards and mobility" page the city lists, among others, the residents' parking card, the blue zone day card and an application for a permit to drive on Tessenbergstrasse. You will not find a specific rule for reserved moving spaces there; so ask before the date how the removal van may stand outside your building, especially in the Old Town, Mett and Madretsch.

Biel/Bienne after moving in: residents' office, eUmzug and bulky waste

The residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle) of the City of Biel/Bienne is at Neuengasse 28 (tel. 032 326 12 25, [email protected]). The counter is open on the mornings of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and on most afternoons, and on Wednesdays from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.; the city provides its pages in German and French. If you are moving within Switzerland, you can report the move and change of address online via eumzug.swiss.

For bulky waste the city distinguishes two routes. Small bulky waste means combustible items from the household, cellar and garage that do not fit into a rubbish bag. It is collected twice a week, may weigh no more than 18 kg per unit and requires stickers: a sofa needs 2 per seat, a rolled-up double-bed mattress 3, a bedside table 1. Put it out between 5 and 7 a.m. together with the household rubbish, without obstructing pedestrians or traffic.

For larger quantities, for example when clearing a flat, there is extra bulky waste. Arrange the collection date by phone with the road inspectorate (Portstrasse 27, tel. 032 326 29 29, Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 to 4 p.m.). Mention the access, floor and lift; charges are based on the work involved. According to the city, there are no public container sites in Biel. Everything about settling in can be found in the guide to living in Biel/Bienne; the route from Berlin is described in the long-distance moving guide.

Always one step ahead.
