Steyr for newcomers: old town Steyrdorf and industry at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr

Newcomer's Guide to Steyr
Steyr: old town and industry on two rivers
The first few weeks
Steyr is the third-largest city in Upper Austria after Linz and Wels and lies at 310 metres in the Alpine foothills on the border with Lower Austria. The statutory city at the confluence of the Enns and the Steyr combines a historic old town with a long industrial history. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle your move to Steyr at a fixed price after a survey; your belongings are covered under the HGB. For newcomers from Germany, the move is a change within the EU, with no customs papers.
Whether you are relocating to Steyr from Berlin, another German city or from within Austria – we organise your home removal from A to Z. Services such as packing, assembly and interim storage can be found under home removal. The route and journey time from Berlin are described on our page Moving from Berlin to Steyr. That is how your start in Steyr succeeds, from the first plan to the last box.

How we prepare your move
Short-stay zone, access, date
Steyr is more than the picturesque old town at the confluence of the Enns and the Steyr: since construction began in 1979, the largest employer has been the BMW engine plant. For moving day, the parking situation matters – the city divides the short-stay parking zones into Innere Stadt, Ennsdorf, Wehrgraben, Steyrdorf and Tabor Süd, and on the Stadtplatz a maximum of one hour applies. Clarify with the city in advance how the removal van may stop; we will tell you the vehicle length and time window. We come from Berlin-Moabit, and your belongings are covered under the HGB.

What
newcomers should sort out early
A move to Steyr brings typical questions: which district suits you, how do I register with the municipal authority, and where do I park? Students at the Steyr campus of the University of Applied Sciences often look centrally, while families tend to look in quieter zones such as Gleink or Christkindl. If you are starting at BMW, SKF or another industrial company, check your commute by city bus or bike. Our guide gives you an honest overview so that your flat hunt in Steyr is targeted and your moving date matches the start of your tenancy.

Questions about living in Steyr
Districts and zones of Steyr
Steyr consists of eight cadastral municipalities, including Christkindl, Gleink, Stein and Steyr. For statistical purposes, the municipal authority divides the city into zones such as Innere Stadt, Steyrdorf, Wehrgraben, Alter Tabor, Tabor/Resthof, Ennsdorf, Ennsleite, Neuschönau, Christkindl, Gleink, Münichholz and Stein. Around the confluence of the two rivers lie the old town, Steyrdorf and Ennsdorf.
In the Wehrgraben stand revitalised factory buildings from the middle of the 19th century, which today house the Museum Arbeitswelt. Which zone suits you depends on your commute, school and bus connections: all city bus lines meet at the Hessenplatz bus station, so one change is enough.
Working, learning and leisure in Steyr
Steyr is an important industrial location: the BMW engine plant, built from 1979, is the city's largest employer; there are also companies such as SKF Österreich, which took over the rolling bearing plant of the former Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1988, and Steyr Automotive, as well as the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Klinikum Steyr hospital. For training and study there is the Steyr campus of the University of Applied Sciences and the HTL Steyr technical college.
In your free time, the riverbanks of the Enns and the Steyr beckon, as do the city museum in the Innerberger Stadel on the Grünmarkt and the Museum Arbeitswelt in the Wehrgraben. We deliberately do not give reliable current rents here – compare offers yourself and ask housing cooperatives.
Guide prices for moving to Steyr
What does a move really cost? Basically, the costs depend on the size of the flat: we move a 1-room flat from as little as €339, for 2 rooms prices start at €599, for 3 rooms from €884 and for 4 rooms from €1,269. For houses or villas we always draw up an individual quote. If you are moving further away, long-distance moves cost from €3.85 per kilometre. It is best to arrange a free survey straight away to receive an exact quote.
What determines the price for Steyr
The decisive factors are first volume and distance – we charge the latter from €3.85/km. The floor of your flat and whether there is a lift are also included in the calculation. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also required. On request we also handle furniture assembly and a shared load.

Registering your residence in Steyr: registration office, deadline and online appointment
According to the City of Steyr, when you change residence you must register at your new address and deregister at the old one within three days. The responsible office is the city's registration office, located in the town hall (Stadtplatz 27) or in the Reithoffer (Pyrachstraße 7), tel. +43 7252 575. Registration appointments are available online, separately for 1 to 2 people and for 3 or more people.
On site, bring an official photo ID (driving licence, passport or identity card) and the completed registration form (Meldezettel) signed by your accommodation provider; foreign nationals need a travel document. Registration is confirmed immediately with a "confirmation of registration" from the Central Register of Residents. Alternatively, registering, deregistering and changing your registration are possible online with ID Austria.
If the person required to register cannot deregister themselves, the accommodation provider or main tenant can initiate an official deregistration via an online form. According to the city, the confirmation of registration also serves as proof of a shared household, for example for housing benefit, the Upper Austrian family card or the mother-and-child allowance.
The city offers a simple confirmation of registration (current registration) and a historical version (all previous registrations and deregistrations), from either the local register of residents or the Central Register of Residents.
With the recycling centre at Ennser Straße 10, the city maintains a central disposal point that helps when clearing out. Help with planning is provided by our guide to moving to Steyr.
Parking zones, city bus and childcare in Steyr
According to the city, Steyr divides its short-stay parking zones into 1a/1b Innere Stadt, 2 Ennsdorf, 3 Wehrgraben, 4 Steyrdorf and 5 Tabor Süd. Fees apply Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 18.00 and Saturday from 8.00 to 12.00, at 80 cents per half hour; on the Stadtplatz and the Grünmarkt a maximum parking time of one hour applies. If your main residence is in an eligible street, you can apply for a residents' parking card (1 year €61.10, 2 years €101.20; vehicle registration certificate and registration form required).
According to the city, the city bus (Stadtbetriebe Steyr, a member of the Upper Austrian transport association) has 165 stops; all lines start and end at the Hessenplatz bus station, so one change is enough.
Outside the fee-paying zones, cars can generally park free of charge, in many districts for a maximum of 90 minutes. Mobile parking is possible via EasyPark, Presto Parking, Parkster and Bluecode. At nursery, mornings from 6.30 to 13.00 are free of charge, and the toddler group provides care Monday to Friday from 7.00 to 15.00.
Childcare: the city runs three toddler groups, eleven nurseries and four after-school clubs. Pre-registration is online and is possible no more than one year before the desired admission date; children with their main residence in Steyr are admitted.
