Montpellier guide
Moving to Montpellier: a university city near the Mediterranean
Guide
A move to Montpellier takes you to one of the largest cities on the French Mediterranean coast: around 310,000 people live here on the River Lez, about 10 km from the sea, and over 400,000 including the suburbs. The city is the prefecture of the Hérault department and belongs to the Occitanie region. Because France is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for household goods. For long routes from Berlin you will find everything under Long-distance moves.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 1,531 km, in France on toll motorways and finally the A9. By lorry that is about 23.5 hours including breaks – several days' worth of driving time, so we plan two to three days with an overnight stop or two drivers. We quote the fixed price after the survey; tolls and driver hours are included. Enquiries on 01625978461.

Moving to Montpellier: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Montpellier by the hour, but by volume, floor, carrying distances and the route of around 1,531 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in the Écusson just as for a house in Port Marianne.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Montpellier works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Montpellier; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the Écusson or a house in Port Marianne. In Montpellier you apply online to the Métropole for the parking permit for the move at least 12 days in advance; according to the city, the applicant puts up the signs – we take care of that. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB with €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Montpellier raises its own questions: is the new address in the Écusson or in another pedestrian zone such as Antigone, when do you apply for the parking permit, and who puts up the signs? This guide explains access, permits and formalities for EU citizens and shows how we plan the around 1,531 km from Berlin. Further destinations can be found under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Montpellier
Écusson, Antigone and Port Marianne: Montpellier at a glance
According to the city, the historic centre, the Écusson, is entirely a pedestrian zone; vehicles may only enter in exceptional cases. Between the main station and the old town lies the Place de la Comédie with the opera house and the Fountain of the Three Graces. East of the centre, the Antigone district was built in a postmodern "Roman style".
The city names further pedestrian areas in Celleneuve, Richter, Port Marianne and Odysseum, among others. For the move this means: in the centre, access permits, delivery times and carrying distances count; in the outer districts, it is more about the parking space. Our private move service adapts accordingly.
University, tram and Mediterranean: who moves to Montpellier
Montpellier is a university city rich in tradition: the medical school was granted university status in 1289. The transport company TaM operates bus routes, four tram lines and the Vélomagg bike hire scheme. Toulouse is around 240 km to the west, Marseille 170 km to the east. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on the district.
As an EU citizen you do not need a residence document in France in the first three months; according to service-public, an EU residence card is not compulsory. In Berlin you deregister within two weeks of moving out if you are not moving into a new home in Germany. Plan the journey with a buffer – from Berlin it takes two to three days.
How much will my move cost me?
There is no blanket answer to this question, but our guide prices give you an orientation: 1-room flat from €349, 2-room flat from €594, 3-room flat from €899, 4-room flat from €1,299. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.10/km. You get clarity through a free survey on site.
How your individual moving price is calculated
First we determine the volume of your belongings, then the distance (from €4.10/km). The floor and lift determine the staffing required, while a parking restriction zone saves time. If needed, we add a part load.

Montpellier: applying for a parking space for the removal van
For a move in Montpellier, you can apply on the Métropole's portal for an "Autorisation de stationnement – Déménagement – Occupation du domaine public" (parking permit for a move on public land). According to the city, the form must be completed at least 12 days before the planned move. The move may last a maximum of three consecutive days. You are asked for your name, a postal address to which the permit is sent, telephone and email; the page does not mention any supporting documents. The form runs in four steps (applicant, address of the move, arrangements, confirmation), and you can save a draft with a code.
In the form you state what you want to occupy: one or more parking spaces, the pavement, traffic lanes, the edge of a tram stop, a bus lane or a cycle lane. You also choose whether the move takes place with or without a furniture lift (monte-meubles). Two points should be planned for early:
- The city does not put up the no-parking signs; the applicant does this.
- The permit does not exempt you from parking charges where parking is paid.
For vehicles under 7.5 tonnes that need to enter a pedestrian zone, the city refers to a separate form ("Accès aux aires piétonnes"). Which option suits your address we discuss during the survey. General tips can be found in the guide to the parking restriction zone; our service for this is described under Parking restriction zone.
Montpellier: the Écusson and pedestrian zones with a removal van
In Montpellier the entire historic centre counts as a pedestrian zone. According to the city, vehicles may only enter in exceptional cases, at walking pace and with consideration for pedestrians. Besides the Écusson, the city names further pedestrian areas, including Antigone, Celleneuve, Richter, Port Marianne and Odysseum; there, pedestrians have priority over all other traffic except the tram. Parking is prohibited under the Highway Code; only time-limited stops by authorised vehicles are allowed. The city states a fine of up to 135 euros for unauthorised entry.
Access permits are issued by the Bureau de gestion des aires piétonnes (pedestrian area management office), 19 rue Durand, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, telephone 04 34 88 76 90. For moves, the city mentions access for up to two days. The application should be made seven days in advance; access is planned from 7 am to 8 pm. According to the city, delivery traffic may enter the Écusson until 10 am and the Antigone district until 11 am.
- Check the exact address and house number with access
- Note the vehicle length and weight for the application
- Plan carrying distances from the stopping place to the front door
