Moving to Budweis (České Budějovice): costs & process

Budweis guide
Moving to Budweis – a guide to South Bohemia's largest city
Planning and costs
České Budějovice, Budweis in German, is the largest city in South Bohemia with around 97,000 inhabitants and the seat of the Jihočeský kraj region. The city lies where the Malše flows into the Vltava; its centre is the wide Přemysl Otakar II Square with the Black Tower. Budweis is world-famous for its beer, and it is also home to the University of South Bohemia and the seat of the diocese. Anyone moving here from Germany plans not only the transport but also residence registration, tolls and access to the centre – this guide explains the steps.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 498 km via Dresden and Prague to Budweis; by lorry that takes about seven and a half hours including a break. Within the EU your household goods need no customs papers. According to the city, separate access rules apply to heavy lorries in the centre – we sort out the permit and stopping place in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route to Berlin. More on this: Planning a move to the Czech Republic.

What we take care of on your move to Budweis
Planned in Berlin, arriving in South Bohemia
We have no branch in the Czech Republic; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and parking space in advance – whether it is an old building on the main square, a flat on a prefab housing estate such as Máj or a new build in České Vrbné. We arrange the permit for access to the centre in good time. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible.

From
planning to assembly
A move to České Budějovice brings its own issues: flat-hunting in sought-after neighbourhoods, registering your residence with the foreigners' police within 30 days and the right vehicle size for old buildings in the centre, where separate access rules apply to heavy lorries. For students at the University of South Bohemia, a part load is often the cheapest solution. We tell you which steps are due before and after moving day, and we plan loading in Berlin, the roughly 498 km via Prague and the reassembly so that you can move in on arrival day.

Frequently asked questions about moving to České Budějovice
The districts of České Budějovice at a glance
The historic centre, Vnitřní Město, delights with the spacious Přemysl Otakar II Square, one of the largest market squares in Central Europe, surrounded by Baroque façades and the city's landmark, the Black Tower. If you are looking for an urban feel with short distances, you will find stylish period flats here, but must expect higher rents and limited parking. Families and students, on the other hand, are often drawn to districts such as Čtyři Dvory, which impresses with its proximity to the Jihočeská univerzita and good value for money.
The Máj district is characterised by prefab blocks from the socialist era, but offers low rents and plenty of green space along the Vltava in return. If you prefer modern new builds, you will find them in České Vrbné, a growing residential area near the university with good links to shopping centres. Rožnov and Suché Vrbné are also becoming increasingly attractive thanks to new housing projects, for families seeking peace and quiet while staying close to the city.
Employers, university and quality of life in České Budějovice
As the economic centre of South Bohemia, the city is home to major employers such as the long-established Budweiser Budvar brewery and regional energy suppliers. The Jihočeská univerzita (University of South Bohemia) attracts thousands of students from home and abroad every year and noticeably shapes the city's young, international atmosphere. Economically stable job opportunities meet affordable living costs here, which makes České Budějovice particularly attractive for career starters and families.
Quality of life also benefits from the proximity to the Bohemian Forest and the popular Lipno reservoir, ideal for weekend trips and water sports. The compact city centre is easy to explore on foot or by bike, while good rail connections to Prague, Linz and Passau ensure wider mobility. If you value peace, nature and still want urban infrastructure, České Budějovice offers a balanced environment for work and leisure.

Access in České Budějovice: central zone for vehicles over 6 tonnes
If you need to drive a heavy removal lorry into the centre of České Budějovice (Budweis), you should clarify the access rules in advance. According to the City of České Budějovice, vehicles with an actual weight of over 6 tonnes may only enter the so-called "centrální zóna" (central zone) with a permit from the municipal office (Magistrát). The zone covers the wider city centre and is defined on the city's website by a map and a list of streets.
- Responsible office: Odbor správy veřejných statků (Department for the Administration of Public Assets), road administration section, in the historic town hall, entrance 3, 2nd floor, door 227.
- Application: The form "Žádost o udělení souhlasu ke vjezdu vozidel s okamžitou hmotností nad 6 tun do oblasti centrální zóna" is available on the city's website.
- Office hours: Monday and Wednesday 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, Friday 8.00 am to 11.30 am.
The city's page does not state a processing time or a fee. That is why we submit the application early and clarify open questions directly with the office. During the survey we check, using the map and street list, whether your destination address lies within the zone. According to this page, the restriction does not apply to smaller vans. You can read how a move across the German-Czech border is organised in the long-distance moving guide for České Budějovice. Our offer for journeys abroad can be found under international moves.
After arriving in České Budějovice: residence registration and motorway vignette
For EU citizens moving to the Czech Republic, the government portal gov.cz states: anyone staying longer than 30 days must register their residence with the foreigners' police within 30 days of entry. The form is free of charge and is submitted to the office responsible for your address, in person or by post. Electronic submission requires a data box or a qualified electronic signature. If you live in accommodation whose operator has already registered you, you do not need to register yourself. Children under 15 are exempt.
Important for the journey: according to gov.cz, vehicles with four or more wheels and a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes need an electronic vignette for motorway sections.
- Validity: 1 day, 10 days, 30 days or 1 year
- Purchase: online via edalnice.cz, at Česká pošta, at EuroOil petrol stations or at vending machines
- Penalty without a valid vignette: according to gov.cz, up to 20,000 koruna
According to this page, heavier vehicles are not covered by the vignette. We clarify which toll rule applies to our lorry before departure and include it in the fixed price. You can read more about our services for cross-border journeys under long-distance moves.
