Moving to Villach: schedule from deregistration to the Meldezettel

Planning Berlin – Villach
Moving to Villach: what needs doing before, during and after the journey
Step by step
A move to Villach is a move to another EU country: there is no customs clearance at the border for your household goods, but there are deadlines on both sides. In Berlin you deregister because you are not moving into a new home in Germany – no earlier than one week before and no later than two weeks after moving out. In Villach the Meldezettel (registration form) must be submitted to the registration office (Meldeamt) within three days of moving in, also signed by the landlord. If you stay longer than three months, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) is added. If you know these dates, you can set moving day so that no deadline is missed.
From Stromstraße 21 it is around 898 km via the A9, A8 and the Tauern Autobahn. By lorry we reckon on about 13.5 hours including breaks – so two drivers or an overnight stop. In Austria the GO toll applies to vehicles over 3.5 t, and the section toll on the Tauern Autobahn. The route is described under Moving Berlin – Villach.

What we take care of when you move to Villach
Transport from Berlin, dates planned together
We have no branch in Austria; instead we drive the lorry from Berlin-Moabit all the way to Villach. On request we take care of packing, dismantling, transport and assembly and plan the roughly 898 km so that driving and rest times are observed. You handle the dealings with the authorities yourself – deregistration in Berlin, the Meldezettel in Villach; we set the delivery date to match. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB) at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Further destinations can be found under long-distance moves.

These dates belong in your plan
A long-distance move to Villach needs no customs, but it does need a schedule: deregistration in Berlin, the journey with an overnight stop or two drivers, and the Meldezettel in Villach within three days. The six points below help you not to overlook anything.
Deregistering in Berlin
No customs within the EU
Meldezettel within 3 days
Registration certificate
Re-register your car
Tolls and driving time
Part load to Carinthia
With only a few pieces of furniture or a small household, a part load can lower the cost of the long route to Villach, because your belongings travel together with other consignments. Instead of a fixed date, a delivery time window then applies – plan your Meldezettel accordingly.

Planning,
journey and arrival
This guide divides the move to Villach into three phases: the weeks beforehand with giving notice, deregistration and the survey; the journey with tolls, driving times and an overnight stop; and the first days in Carinthia with the Meldezettel, parking and your car. The choice between a dedicated lorry and a part load affects cost and date. Everyday life in the town is described in our guide to Villach and its districts.

Common questions
No customs, but deadlines: the paperwork for Austria
Because Germany and Austria both belong to the EU, your household goods are not subject to customs at the border, and you do not need proof of residence for customs. An inventory list with numbered boxes still helps with unloading. The actual formalities lie with the registration authorities: in Berlin you deregister at the Bürgeramt because you are not moving into a new home in Germany.
In Villach the Austrian registration requirement applies: within three days of moving in, you hand in the Meldezettel at the registration office, which the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber) also signs. EU citizens staying longer than three months apply for a registration certificate within four months. With your main residence in Austria, a car with German number plates may in principle only be used for one month from the date it is brought in; after that it needs Austrian registration.
898 km via the A9, A8 and the Tauern Autobahn
With a good 66,000 inhabitants, Villach is the second-largest city in Carinthia after Klagenfurt and lies at the confluence of the Drau and Gail. From Berlin-Moabit the route runs via the A9 to Munich, the A99 and A8 to the Walserberg border crossing and then via the Tauern Autobahn through the Tauern to the Villach junction. That is around 898 km; by lorry, including breaks, about 13.5 hours.
Under EU driving-time rules, a driver may drive no more than nine hours a day and must take a 45-minute break after four and a half hours. For Villach this means two drivers taking turns or an overnight stop en route. Including loading in Berlin and unloading in Carinthia, we therefore plan the move over two to three days – which option suits you we discuss during the survey.
All prices at a glance
In brief: 1 room from €375, 2 rooms from €605, 3 rooms from €879, 4 rooms from €1,309. Houses and villas are quoted individually. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.80/km. We are happy to clarify all further details in person during a free survey.
What does the price of your move depend on?
The level of costs depends above all on the volume of your belongings and the number of kilometres (from €3.80/km). The floor, whether there is a lift and any required parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also have an effect. Optional services such as a part load can lower the price.

Further destinations in Austria
We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), including to Austria. In the locations overview you will find places with their own pages, and longer routes are listed under long-distance moves. We plan the return journey from Carinthia to Berlin in exactly the same way.
Villach: special use of public roads, parking and access on moving day
On its page about parking and traffic, the city of Villach (Rathausplatz 1, 9500 Villach, telephone +43 4242 205) points out that an official permit is required for special use of municipal road land (Sondernutzung von Gemeindestraßengrund), for example for scaffolding, market stalls or events. Whether a lorry blocking road space on moving day falls under this, the city does not say explicitly on that page. We found no specific information there on no-parking zones, the pedestrian zone or exemption permits, nor any deadline or fee.
So ask the city early whether your destination address requires a permit. The city refers to a section "Parken, Verkehr und Mobilität" (parking, traffic and mobility) and to "Baustellen und Verkehrsbehinderungen" (roadworks and traffic disruption), where you can check current restrictions.
In practice we proceed as follows:
- During planning we clarify whether the street is narrow, whether there is an access restriction and where the lorry can stand.
- We set loading and unloading times so that traffic is obstructed as little as possible.
- We check whether driving bans for heavy lorries on the day of travel affect your date. Which rules apply we find out from the authority or as part of route planning.
More on securing the loading zone can be found under parking restriction zone. The process of a journey to Austria is described in the article Long-distance move to Austria.
Villach: registration office, booking appointments and interim storage
In Villach the registration office is part of the citizens' service (Bürgerservice) in the town hall, together with the passport office, registry office and residence matters. The city recommends using online appointment booking to avoid waiting times. According to the city, service hours may vary by department. Check the times before your visit. The city gives the hours of the residence authority (Niederlassungs- und Aufenthaltsbehörde) as Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon.
On the registration deadline: according to the city of Villach, you register within three days of taking up residence. You need to bring the fully completed Meldezettel, which the accommodation provider also signs, and proof of identity such as your passport. According to the city, online registration via oesterreich.gv.at is reserved for Austrian citizens. It is best to schedule the appointment for the first few days after moving in so that the deadline is met.
For moving day we recommend:
- Handover: Confirm the appointment with the landlord or property management, including for keys and meters.
- Access: Ask in advance about the stairwell, lift and parking options.
- Time buffer: On long routes a buffer between collection in Berlin and delivery can be sensible.
If the flat is not yet free on arrival day, we can put your belongings into temporary storage, see storage. If you are also planning elsewhere in Carinthia, the guide to the long-distance move to Klagenfurt offers further orientation.
