Villach for newcomers
Life where three countries meet: Villach at a glance
Arriving in Carinthia
A move to Villach takes you to Carinthia's second-largest city, with around 66,000 inhabitants, located on the Drau between Lake Ossiach, Lake Faak and the Karawanks. The Innere Stadt (inner town), with its Hauptplatz and pedestrian zone, lies on the right bank of the Drau; Lind and St. Martin adjoin it, while Landskron, Maria Gail and Warmbad-Judendorf lie further out. According to the city, loading activities in the pedestrian zone require an exemption granted case by case – we clarify this for your private move in advance.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also drive to Austria; the route to Villach is around 900 km long and a two-day journey for a removal lorry. Your household goods are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and we can dismantle and reassemble the furniture on request. More about our services under private move.

Only one room for Villach? Part load!
If you are only bringing a few pieces of furniture to Villach, for example for studying at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (FH Kärnten), a part load is often cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading south. In return the delivery day is somewhat more flexible than with a dedicated lorry.

Living,
registering, arriving
A move to Villach involves more than transport: choosing your district, the Meldezettel at the town hall, the registration certificate for EU citizens and nursery or school places. Short-stay parking zones and the pedestrian zone also play a role on moving day. We advise on furniture lifts, interim storage and house clearance. The route from Berlin is described on our long-distance moves page.

Questions about living in and moving to Villach
An overview of Villach's districts
The Innere Stadt, with the Hauptplatz, St. Jakob parish church and the pedestrian zone, offers short distances but little space for removal vans; an exemption permit is required for loading in the pedestrian zone. On the other bank of the Drau lies Lind, and to the north and west St. Martin and Völkendorf adjoin. In the north-east, the ruined castle of Landskron towers over the district of the same name near Lake Ossiach.
In the south lies Warmbad-Judendorf, with the thermal springs of Warmbad Villach, in the south-east Maria Gail, in the west Fellach, and with Drobollach the city extends to Lake Faak (Faaker See). Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and budget. The route from Berlin is described on our page Moving from Berlin to Villach.

The Meldezettel in Villach: deadline, documents and registration office
Anyone taking up accommodation in Villach must, according to the city of Villach, register within three days. The federal portal oesterreich.gv.at also states this deadline and points out that a fine may be imposed for breaching the registration requirement. If you move within Austria, according to the city you deregister at your old address within three days before or after moving out; deregistration in Germany follows the German deadlines.
You need a completed, signed Meldezettel. The form must also be signed by the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber). In addition you need proof of identity, such as a passport and birth certificate; nationals of other countries generally need a passport or ID card.
The registration office (Stadtservice) is in the town hall, Rathausplatz 1. According to the city, you are welcome in person Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays also from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm; on Tuesdays appointments until 7.00 pm are also possible. Via the city's online appointment booking you can book registration, deregistration and change of registration as well as registration confirmations. Registration is also possible by post or via a messenger; it is not accepted by fax or email. According to the portal, purely online registration via oesterreich.gv.at requires ID Austria or EU Login and a previous registration in Austria; as a newcomer from Germany you will therefore usually register in person.

Villach: parking zones, pedestrian zone and recycling centre
The city of Villach distinguishes between a green zone and a blue short-stay parking zone, both subject to charges from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 6 pm. According to the city, in the green zone you pay 0.40 euros for 30 minutes and 0.80 euros for an hour, with the daily rate capped at 4 euros. In the blue zone, 30 minutes cost 70 cents, with a maximum of 180 minutes. The first 20 minutes are free in both zones, and in the town centre parking is free without restriction from 6 pm to 8 am. The residents' parking permit for the green zone costs 100 euros a year.
If you need to drive a lorry into the pedestrian zone, according to the city you need a case-by-case exemption for loading activities; it is applied for online, and the badge is sent by post. Fees and administrative charges apply, but the city does not state the amounts. Information is available from the road law authority (Straßenrechtsbehörde) at [email protected] or on 04242 205 2112. We did not find separate instructions on villach.at for a no-parking zone in front of the building; ask there early, and see more under parking restriction zone.
The recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum) is at Drauwinkelstraße 2 and accepts waste in household quantities, Monday to Friday from 7 am to 5 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 12.30 pm.
