Moving to Zlín: costs process & districts

Zlín guide
Zlín: the city of the Baťa shoe factory
Districts, housing, offices
A move to Zlín takes you to a city shaped by a company: with the Baťa shoe factory, founded in 1894, Zlín grew from around 5,000 to 43,000 residents and became an early functionalist city with brick houses. Today around 74,000 people live here in the valley of the Dřevnice. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. We take care of packing, transport and assembly; details under international move.
Whether you are moving into a flat in the Jižní Svahy prefab housing estate or a house in Malenovice – we plan the vehicle and loading route for your address. We are based in Berlin and also move people abroad; it is around 649 road kilometres to Zlín via Dresden, Prague and Brno. In the Czech Republic, a reserved parking space requires a permit from the road authority. This makes your move to Zlín easy to plan.

What we clarify before moving day in Zlín
Parking space, route, registration
For a reserved parking space, Czech road law requires a permit from the road traffic authority; the City of Zlín provides application forms for this. For the roughly 649 km from Berlin we schedule driving and rest times, usually with two days for loading and unloading. We give you the price as a fixed price after the survey. On request, furniture assembly and storage can be added if the new flat is not yet ready to move into. Your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB (€620 per m³).

Zlín
for newcomers
When moving to Zlín, besides the transport you need to plan for registration with the foreign police, health insurance and, where applicable, a nursery or school place. If you are moving for a job in the region, start flat hunting early; large employers such as the tyre plant in Otrokovice are in the surrounding area. Your phone contract and vehicle also belong on the checklist. Our guide Emigrating to the Czech Republic gives an overview.

Frequently asked questions about living in Zlín
Baťa centre, Jižní Svahy and Malenovice
The centre of Zlín is shaped by the Baťa era: factory grounds, the brick houses of the workers’ estates and the Baťa skyscraper, “Building 21”, completed in 1939. From 1949 to 1990 the city was called Gottwaldov. In the south lies the large Jižní Svahy prefab housing estate with many flats, schools and shops; residential areas such as Podvesná and Louky adjoin it.
More village-like are districts such as Malenovice with its castle, Štípa with its pilgrimage church, Kostelec, Prštné or Příluky. Each district has its own page with contacts on zlin.eu. During the survey we clarify access, floor and parking space for your new address.
University, work and daily life in Zlín
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on the Czech portals and, if in doubt, have contracts translated. Tomas Bata University (UTB) was founded in 2001 and brings many students to the city. Important employers in the region are also in the surrounding area, such as the Continental Barum tyre plant in Otrokovice and the plastics manufacturer Fatra in Napajedla.
Zlín lies on the I/49 road and on the Otrokovice–Vizovice railway line. Culturally, it is known for the Zlín Film Festival, which has taken place since 1961; the city’s film studios became internationally known for their animated films. Our team sets your moving date to suit the handover of your new flat.

What the price to Zlín depends on
The basis is always the volume of your belongings. On top of that come the distance (from €3.85/km), the floor and whether a lift is available. For a smooth process on narrow streets we recommend a parking restriction zone. We are happy to combine this with furniture assembly or a part load.

Removal van in Zlín: parking space, access and special use of the road
If you are moving to Zlín, clarify early where the lorry may park. Under Czech road law (Act 13/1997 Coll., § 25), a permit from the competent road traffic authority is required if a road is used other than in the usual way. Setting up a reserved parking space is expressly named there as special use. The authority decides on a written application, for a fixed period and with conditions, after prior consent from the road owner.
At the City of Zlín, the Odbor stavebních a dopravních řízení (department for building and traffic procedures) provides the relevant documents. Available for download are, among others, the application “Žádost o zvláštní užívání pozemní komunikace” (special use for events, stalls, containers, scaffolding) and the “Návrh na stanovení místní – přechodné úpravy provozu”, a proposal for a temporary traffic arrangement. Which procedure is needed for your address depends on whether the van is to stand on the carriageway, a square or a side street. The city’s page does not state fees or processing times, so ask the authority directly and submit the application early.
During a survey we clarify access, loading route and floor with you so that the date fits the permit. As with a parking restriction zone in Berlin, for a long-distance move to the Czech Republic we also plan the parking space and loading route in Zlín in advance.
Arriving in Zlín: registration obligation, bulky waste and the 27 districts
According to the Czech government portal (portal.gov.cz), EU citizens staying in the Czech Republic for longer than 30 days must register: the place of residence must be reported to the foreign police (cizinecká policie) within 30 days of entry. Registration is free of charge. It is not required if the accommodation provider has already fulfilled this obligation for you. According to the portal, failure to register can be penalised with a fine of up to CZK 3,000. You will find an overview of the formalities in our checklist for emigrating to the Czech Republic.
On zlin.eu the City of Zlín lists 27 districts (místní části), including Zlín-centrum, Jižní Svahy I and II, Malenovice, Prštné, Příluky, Štípa and Kudlov. Many have their own district offices, which are the point of contact for local questions.
You dispose of old furniture and leftover items from the move via Technické služby Zlín. According to the operator, the collection yards in Louky, Zálešná and Malenovice accept bulky and construction waste, such as old furniture, carpets and wood. For residents, drop-off is free within a monthly limit. The waste calendar also lists Saturday dates for bulky waste, organic waste, metals and hazardous substances; it is approved by the municipal environment department. If there is a lot to clear before the move, our house clearance can help.
