Villach for Newcomers: The Drau City with a Three-Day Deadline

First steps

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your household goods to Villach – you then take care of the registration yourself.

With just over 66,000 inhabitants, Villach is the second-largest city in Carinthia after Klagenfurt and lies at the confluence of the Drau and the Gail. If you move here, the first deadline starts on moving day: within three days, your registration form (Meldezettel) must be at the registration office in the town hall, also signed by the landlord. If, as an EU citizen, you stay longer than three months, you also apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung). After that come everyday questions such as parking in the Green Zone, bulky waste from the move and the route to work.

You can find flats via property portals, property management companies and non-profit housing associations; districts such as St. Martin, Völkendorf, Lind or Auen are close to the centre, while Landskron, Maria Gail and Fellach became part of the city in 1973. Major employers include the semiconductor manufacturer Infineon with its main Austrian site and the technology park with the FH Kärnten (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences). What life is like in the individual districts is described in our guide to Villach and its districts.

What We Take Care of for Your Start in Villach

Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side

We have no branch in Carinthia; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit to Villach. On request, we take care of packing, transport and assembly, so that in the first few days you have time for the registration office, residents' parking and the flat handover. Whether a permit for the lorry is needed in front of the building is something we clarify in advance with you and the city. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Villach.

Packing Service

Boxes labelled by room and furniture assembled – so your flat in Villach is quickly ready to live in and you have time for the registration office, with our packing service.

Office Move

If you are moving an office to Carinthia, you plan dismantling in Berlin and setting up in Villach in fixed time slots – with an office move.

Senior Move

If parents are moving to join their children in Carinthia, we reassemble beds and wardrobes on the day of arrival in Villach – with a senior move.

Registration certificate

If, as an EU citizen, you stay longer than three months, you need a registration certificate from the residence authority in the town hall – you book the appointment online.
04

Residents' parking

With your main residence in the Green Zone, you can apply for a residents' parking permit for €100 a year, also online.

What
this guide covers

Authorities, housing, everyday life

This guide is for everyone moving to Villach: it explains registration with the registration form and registration certificate, gives an overview of districts and the flat hunt, and collects the everyday questions of the first weeks – residents' parking, bulky waste, city bus and rail. The proximity to Lake Ossiach and Lake Faak is part of it; both lie within or on the edge of the municipal area. You should also ask the city about childcare and school enrolment early on.

Week 1: Authorities

Registration form within three days, then the registration certificate and residents' parking – if you schedule these early, you start in Villach without deadline pressure after a home removal, senior move or student move.

Week 2: furnishing the flat

With a packing service and careful furniture transport, your home is furnished quickly; you take leftover boxes and bulky waste to the recycling centre in Villach by small move or yourself.

Afterwards: organising everyday life

City bus, StadtBAHN, car and childcare – and for companies, the right date. For an office move, company relocation, shared load or furniture taxi to Villach, we plan dedicated time slots.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to Villach

Registration, flat hunting, employers, parking and moving – answered briefly.
Around the old town lie St. Martin, Völkendorf, Lind and Auen, among others, with Warmbad in the south. The formerly independent villages of Landskron, Maria Gail and Fellach have belonged to the city since 1973. When choosing, what counts most is your commute, bus connections and whether the flat lies in the Green Zone – also ask about nearby nurseries and schools.

Districts of Villach: A First Overview

Villach lies on the western edge of the Klagenfurt Basin, where the Gail flows into the Drau. Around the old town lie districts such as St. Martin, Völkendorf, Lind and Auen; in the south is Warmbad with its thermal springs. In 1973 Landskron, Maria Gail and Fellach were added, giving the city its present size.

Which district suits you depends above all on your commute: city bus lines connect the main station with Völkendorf, St. Martin, Fellach, Auen and the Infineon site, among others. When viewing a flat, also check whether it lies in the Green Zone – residents' parking depends on it.

Working, Studying and Leisure in Villach

Villach is the main site of Infineon Technologies Austria; the plant goes back to a Siemens diode production facility from 1970 and was expanded with a further factory in 2021. The Villach technology park is home to the FH Kärnten and a site of Silicon Austria Labs, among others. As one of Austria's most important railway hubs, the city is also a major ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) site, with the Villach-Süd marshalling yard to the south.

For leisure, Lake Ossiach, Lake Faak and smaller lakes such as the Silbersee and Vassacher See lie within the municipal area or on its edge, and the Dobratsch rises to the west of the city. The Villacher Kirchtag, a traditional folk festival, is also well known. We deliberately do not give specific rents here – compare current offers on the portals.

The location is convenient for commuters: the Drau Valley Railway, Rudolf Railway and Karawanks Railway meet at the main station, and the S-Bahn lines S1, S2 and S4 run to Klagenfurt, Faak am See and Hermagor, among other places.

Moving price: the decisive levers
