Long-distance move Berlin – Krems: Route Process & Deadlines

From Berlin to the Wachau
Long-distance move to Krems: route, tolls and Meldezettel
Guide
A move to Austria is not a customs matter: Germany and Austria are part of the EU, and your household goods cross the border without customs papers. Other things matter – the route through the Czech Republic with a vignette or toll, the registration form (Meldezettel) within three days of moving in and, for a longer stay, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung). Krems lies 70 km west of Vienna on the eastern edge of the Wachau; the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For your private move we clarify access and floor in advance.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, after a survey, quote you a fixed price in which packing, transport, tolls and assembly are listed as items. The shortest road connection runs around 604 km via Dresden, Prague and the D3 to Gmünd and on through the Waldviertel. Because a through-traffic ban for lorries over 3.5 t applies on the Neu-Nagelberg–Horn stretch, a large removal lorry goes via Jihlava and Znojmo – a little longer. With breaks we allow about nine hours of lorry driving, which is close to the daily driving time: we load the day before or drive with two drivers. More on the route under Moving Berlin – Krems.

What we handle for your long-distance move to Krems
Planning in Berlin, arrival on the Danube

We pack, carry, transport and assemble; you take care of the Meldezettel and the registration certificate yourself – we give you the arrival day in writing. No customs duty is due within the EU. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

What should be done before setting off for Krems
You do not need a customs declaration or an inventory list with values for Austria – both only apply to moves from non-EU countries. A simple, numbered box list still helps when unloading in Krems and in case of damage.
Access sorted
Arrival planned
Registration in view
No customs within the EU
Return trip possible
Storage to bridge a gap
Save with a part load
A part load (Beiladung) to Krems combines several small jobs in one lorry travelling on the route via Dresden and Prague to Lower Austria. This lowers the cost per cubic metre but requires flexibility on the delivery day – often the cheapest solution for single pieces of furniture.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Austria involves a number of topics: the route through the Czech Republic with a vignette or toll, the Meldezettel within three days, the registration certificate for a longer stay, the car with German number plates and taking pets along. This guide summarises what you do yourself and what we take care of. Customs duties play no role within the EU.

Common questions
Formalities when moving to Krems an der Donau
As Austria is part of the European Union, there is no customs clearance for your household goods when moving from Germany to Krems; customs declarations and rules on removal goods only concern moves from non-EU countries. What matters is the Meldezettel (registration form): within three days of moving in, you register with the city. If you stay longer than three months, as an EU citizen you apply for a registration certificate within four months of entry. If your car is permanently based in Austria because your main residence is there, it must be registered in Austria; the standard fuel consumption tax (NoVA) is usually due – clarify the deadline and documents with the vehicle registration office. Health insurance and taxes depend on your employment; seek advice on these early.
Costs and process of your long-distance move to Krems
The costs depend on the moving volume, floors, access and additional services such as packing or furniture assembly, plus the roughly 604 km and the tolls in the Czech Republic and Austria. After a free survey or a video appointment you receive a fixed price; details on long-distance routes under Long-distance moves. The process: survey, quote, packing date, loading in Berlin – the day before for large flats –, the drive via Prague and unloading in Krems with furniture assembly. Because a lorry over 3.5 t goes via Znojmo due to a through-traffic ban in the Waldviertel, we plan the arrival time with a buffer. If the flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in Berlin in the meantime.
Transparent prices for every move
Whether a small flat or a large house – with us you pay fairly and transparently. Moving a 1-room flat starts from €359, and a 2-room flat costs from €584. For 3 rooms we charge from €905, for 4 rooms from €1,324. A house or villa always receives an individual quote, as many factors play a role here. For long-distance moves a per-kilometre price from €4.25/km applies. Take advantage of our free survey to get clarity on your individual costs.

Krems an der Donau: Meldezettel, citizens' service and traffic police
After moving into Krems, according to the City of Krems you must register within three days, counted from the day you actually move in and not from the signing of the tenancy agreement. Each person in the household needs their own Meldezettel, signed by the landlord. The city also lists a birth certificate, proof of citizenship or passport and, where applicable, proof of marital status. You do not need to attend in person; the documents can be handed in by post or by third parties. Registration is free of charge.
- Citizens' service office: Obere Landstraße 4, 3500 Krems, tel. 02732 801 541.
- Deregistration: between three days before and three days after giving up the flat.
According to the city, the traffic police (Straßenpolizei) are responsible for traffic restrictions and traffic law, also in the town hall at Obere Landstraße 4 (tel. 02732 801 295, [email protected]). They can be reached in person Monday to Friday 8 am–12 noon, and by phone Monday to Thursday 8 am–4 pm and Fridays 8 am–12 noon. The city does not list an online application specifically for parking restrictions on these pages; so ask early how to apply for a parking restriction outside the building.
How such zones work in Germany can be read in our guide to the parking restriction zone. The destination country is explained in Long-distance move to Austria, and the town in Living in Krems an der Donau.
Krems an der Donau: parking zones and free bulky waste collection
According to the city, there are two parking zones in Krems. Charges apply Monday to Friday 8 am–6 pm and Saturday 8 am–12 noon.
- Blue zone (short-stay): 0.50 euros per 30 minutes, maximum 3 hours.
- Green zone (long-stay): 0.50 euros per hour; day ticket 4 euros, 7-day ticket 16 euros, 30-day ticket 60 euros.
- After paying for the first unit of at least 0.50 euros, one hour is free in both zones.
Resident and employee permits are only valid in the zone for which they were issued. Payment is by coins, notes or, in the WEST, OST and SÜD car parks, by app.
On bulky waste, the city names two options. Households connected to residual waste collection can drop off bulky waste free of charge at the recycling centre, Rechte Kremszeile 64. There is also one collection per year per property of a normal household quantity, roughly one flatbed truck load, to be put out at the property boundary. The appointment is arranged on 02732/801-653. According to the city, household liquidations and house clearances are expressly not covered by this. You can reach the recycling centre on 02732/801 652 ([email protected]); the city does not give opening hours on this page, so ask in advance.
For this, we offer house clearance. Costs and districts at a glance: Moving to Krems an der Donau.
