FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

New city

New city, new address: the process in three phases

From giving notice to registration

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit and drives your household goods to your new city – with a parking space at both addresses.

A move to another city starts with two dates: the end of the old tenancy and the start of the new one. As a tenant you usually give three months' notice (§ 573c BGB). In between lies the long-distance move from Berlin-Moabit: 284 km to Hamburg, around 580 km to Munich. More under long-distance move.

The lorry needs a parking space at both addresses; you apply for the parking restriction (Halteverbot) at the road traffic authority of the respective city. After moving in, you register at the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks – with the confirmation from your new landlord. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), carry out the survey in Berlin and then quote a fixed price. Destinations with their own pages are shown in the overview locations.

TIMETABLE

Four dates that determine everything

Counted backwards from moving day

With a long-distance move, the dates depend on each other: notice, parking restriction, moving day and registration. If you plan them backwards from the moving-in day, you avoid paying double rent and empty days. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle dismantling, transport and reassembly; the fixed price is drawn up after the survey in Berlin. More on the routes is under long-distance moves.

Giving notice

Three months' notice for tenants (§ 573c BGB). Only give notice once the new tenancy agreement in the other city is signed.

Parking restriction

Apply at both addresses with the respective road traffic authority. The new city has its own deadlines and fees.

Moving day

For distances under about 400 km, loading and unloading usually take place on the same day; for longer routes, on the following day. Lorries over 7.5 t do not drive on Sundays.

Registration

Within two weeks of moving in at the Bürgeramt of the new city – with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord (§ 19 BMG).
NOTHING FORGOTTEN

Six contracts and authorities after the move

With the new city your address, utility providers and sometimes authorities change. For some contracts there are fixed rules when you move; the costs per kilometre for the transport itself are in the price overview (from €4.25 per kilometre).

01

Electricity and gas

When you change residence you can cancel the supply contract with six weeks' notice – unless the supplier continues to supply you at the new location (§ 41b EnWG).
02

Internet and phone

The provider must continue the contract at the new residence. If it offers nothing there, you can cancel with one month's notice (§ 60 TKG).
03

Car

Report the new address to the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); you may keep your existing number plate.
04

Post

A mail forwarding order catches letters for the first few months. You should still inform your bank, employer and insurers directly.
05

Nursery and school

Ask about places in the new city early; ideally time a change of school for the holidays, and don't forget to deregister in Berlin.
06

Tax

Work-related move: costs as income-related expenses. Private move: 20% of labour costs, up to €4,000 (§ 35a EStG).
FOR SMALL LOADS

Little to move? Part load!

Ideal for just a few pieces of furniture

With a shared load, your removal goods travel on a lorry that is heading towards your new city anyway. You pay your share of the cargo space instead of a dedicated trip; in return there is a time window rather than a fixed delivery day. Good for individual pieces of furniture over long distances.

What to do when

A successful long-distance move starts with the schedule: notice, parking restrictions at both addresses and moving day must fit together, followed by registration, contracts and tax. A weekly plan from eight weeks before until moving in can be found in the guide long-distance move: 8-week schedule. There are separate service pages for pianos, storage and furniture assembly. This turns your move to another city into a project you can plan.

Before: fix the dates

New tenancy agreement, notice with a three-month period, survey and fixed price, parking restrictions in both cities, cancel or take electricity and internet with you according to the moving rules. Sorting out now saves cargo space and money on a private move over long distances.

On the way: moving day

Dismantling and loading in Berlin, the drive on the motorway, unloading the same evening or the next morning. Documents, jewellery and medicines travel with you, not in the furniture transport. Have the keys and the parking space ready at the destination.

Arrived: authorities and contracts

Registration within two weeks, the vehicle registration office for the car, new address to your bank, employer, health insurer and broadcasting licence fee. If the move is work-related, collect all receipts for the income-related expenses in your next tax return.

FAQ

Questions about moving to another city

Costs, duration, shared load, liability, dates and contracts – answered briefly.
With us, the costs per kilometre start from €4.25; on top come volume, floors, access and additional services. After a survey in Berlin we quote a fixed price so that you can plan your move to another city precisely. For small volumes a shared load can be cheaper.

How a move to another city works

A move to another city starts with a survey of your Berlin flat, during which we record volume, floors and access. After that we quote a fixed price in which packing, assembly, parking restrictions or storage are listed separately if you book them.

On moving day we dismantle in Berlin, load and drive on the motorway to your new city. Up to about 400 km, unloading usually takes place on the same day; for longer routes, the next morning. In the new flat we reassemble the furniture.

Costs and ways to save on a long-distance move

The costs per kilometre depend on distance, moving volume and the additional services you want. With us, prices start from €4.25/km; we quote the fixed price for your move after the survey.

The biggest savings are in volume: what does not travel takes up no cargo space. If you have few removal goods and are flexible about the delivery day, use the shared load. For a work-related move, the guide moving costs when changing jobs is worth reading.

Our moving team's price list

  • 2-room: from €615

Calculating moving costs: this is what matters

The calculation depends first and foremost on volume and distance (from €4.25/km). Then come the floor, the lift and, where needed, a parking restriction zone. If you also need furniture assembly or a shared load, say so early on.
