New in Wels: Registering Finding a Flat and Daily Life on the Traun

Arriving in Wels
Wels for Newcomers: What Needs Doing in the First Weeks
First steps
With just over 65,000 inhabitants, Wels is the second-largest city in Upper Austria after Linz and lies on the left bank of the Traun. The city is divided into nine districts: Innere Stadt, Lichtenegg, Neustadt, Oberthan, Pernau, Puchberg, Vogelweide, Schafwiesen and Waidhausen. Names such as Gartenstadt or Noitzmühle are also commonly used. For newcomers, daily life begins with a short deadline: within three days of moving in, you register with the registration authority, with one registration form (Meldezettel) per person.
After that it's about your flat, getting around and waste disposal. EU citizens can only put their name down for a municipal flat after five years of main residence or employment in Wels – so recent arrivals look on the open market or with housing cooperatives. Wels lies on the Westbahn (Western Railway), the line to Passau branches off at the main station, and the A1, A25 and A8 form a motorway ring around the city. Recyclables and bulky waste from the move are accepted at the recycling centre at Florianiweg 9. For your home removal to Wels, we take care of transport from Berlin, with packing and assembly on request.
