Moving to Wels: deadlines the drive via Passau and the first few days

Planning Berlin – Wels
Moving to Wels: the order that saves on deadlines
Guide
A move to Wels crosses an internal EU border: there is no customs clearance for your household goods; what matters are the formalities with the registration authorities. In Berlin you deregister because you are not moving into a new flat in Germany – no earlier than one week before and no later than two weeks after moving out. In Wels you submit the registration form (Meldezettel) to the registration authority at Stadtplatz 1 within three days of moving in; the accommodation provider co-signs it. If you stay longer than three months, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) follows.
From Stromstraße 21 it is around 702 km: via the A9 and A72 to Hof, the A93 to Regensburg, the A3 to Passau and from the border the Innkreis motorway to Wels. By lorry, including breaks, we reckon on about 11 hours – more than one day's driving time. We therefore plan two drivers or an overnight stop. In Austria, the GO toll applies to vehicles over 3.5 t on motorways and expressways. The route in detail: Moving Berlin – Wels.

Survey, schedule, fixed price
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a survey for your long-distance move to Wels. We record the volume, plan the loading day, a second driver or an overnight stop and the unloading date in Upper Austria, and then give you a fixed price that includes tolls and driver costs. If the scope does not change, that price stays the same.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Wels
Transport from Berlin, deadlines in view

Part loads to Upper Austria
For individual pieces of furniture, a room in a shared flat or a small household, a part load (Beiladung) to Wels can be cheaper: your household goods travel together with other consignments. Instead of a fixed date, a delivery window applies – plan the flat handover and registration form accordingly.

during and after the drive

Common questions
Paperwork for Austria: deregistration, registration form, car
As Austria is part of the European Union, no customs duty is charged on your household goods when you enter the country. The formalities lie with the registration authorities: in Berlin you deregister, and in Wels you register with the registration office (Meldeamt) within three days of moving in. If you stay longer than three months, you also apply for the registration certificate at the residence authority.
For the car: with your main residence in Austria, it may generally only be used with German number plates for one month from the date it is brought in; after that it needs Austrian registration, usually with the standard consumption tax (NoVA). Clarify health and social insurance with your employer or insurer.
702 km via Hof, Regensburg and Passau
With a good 65,000 inhabitants, Wels is the second-largest city in Upper Austria after Linz and lies on the left bank of the Traun. The route there does not go via Munich: from Berlin-Moabit it runs via the A9 and A72 to Hof, on the A93 to Regensburg, via the A3 to Passau and, from the border at Suben, on the Innkreis motorway to Wels – around 702 km in total.
By lorry that is about 11 hours including breaks. Under EU driving-time rules, a driver may drive no more than nine hours a day and must take a 45-minute break after four and a half hours. With loading in Berlin and unloading in Wels, that usually means two days. We clarify which option suits you during the survey.
How much does my move cost? All prices in detail
The cost of a move depends primarily on the size of the flat. For a one-room flat we charge from €339, for a two-room flat from €579. For a three-room flat the price starts from €905, for a four-room flat from €1,289. Houses and villas need to be considered individually, which is why we always prepare an individual quote for them. If you are moving further away, long-distance moves cost from €4.20 per kilometre. The calculation is most accurate during a free survey.
These factors determine your moving price
Besides the volume itself, the distance covered plays a major role – here we calculate from €4.20/km. The floor of the flat and a missing lift also increase the effort. If a parking restriction zone has to be set up, additional costs arise, as they do for booked furniture assembly or a part load.

Wels: crossing the border, registration form and paperwork at a glance
For a long-distance move from Berlin to Wels, two things matter: the drive across the border and registering at your new place of residence. The customs exemption for removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut), described by German customs on zoll.de, applies to moves from a non-EU country into the EU. Austria is an EU member state, so a move from Berlin to Wels does not fall under these non-EU rules. You can find details on import and exceptions in our guide to customs and formalities when moving to Austria.
At the destination, according to the city of Wels: anyone moving into accommodation in Wels registers within three days with the registration authority (Stadtplatz 1, 4600 Wels). This can be done in person, via a messenger or by post; for the postal option, documents must be enclosed as originals or certified copies. The city states that registration is free of charge.
- Registration form for each person, signed by the person required to register and by the accommodation provider (owner, housing cooperative or main tenant)
- Passport or identity card; without Austrian citizenship, the travel document in all cases
- According to the city, changing your main residence is also possible online via oesterreich.gv.at
So plan your arrival so that the key handover and the appointment at the registration authority fit together within the deadline.
Route & process: Berlin-Moabit to Wels – loading, access and permits
We start at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit, load at your Berlin address and then drive around 702 km towards Upper Austria. We state the exact process with a second driver or an overnight stop in the quote.
At the destination, you should find out early whether the removal van needs a permit to stop in front of your building. On its page "Work on or next to the road" (Arbeiten auf oder neben der Straße), the city of Wels states that a permit from the authority is required if road traffic is affected, and that applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the measure. The responsible office is the Department of Building, Trade and Traffic Affairs (Rainerstraße 2, 4600 Wels, email [email protected]). The page does not say whether a move is explicitly covered: so ask the department early on.
- Loading in Berlin: state the floor, lift and carrying routes in advance, and plan a parking restriction at the moving-out address if needed
- Unloading in Wels: agree access, parking options and the desired time slot in good time
- Part load or exclusive transport: with few goods, a part load is an option; with a fixed date, your own transport
You can find everything about the scope of services for long routes under Long-distance move; price information and districts are in the guide to costs and districts in Wels.
