Cost of Moving to Belgium: Price Factors & Planning

Costs of a move to Belgium
What makes up the price of a move to Belgium
Route, tolls, parking space
A move to Belgium costs more than a move within Germany, but not because of customs: Germany and Belgium are EU members, and household goods cross the border without customs papers. What drives the price is the route – from Berlin-Moabit around 728 km to Antwerp, 756 km to Brussels and 796 km to Arlon – the driving times, the lorry toll and the parking permit at the destination. Over these distances the lorry drives for more than one day's driving time; a second driver or an overnight stop belongs in the calculation. We plan your long-distance move from the survey to assembly.
We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available for valuables – that too is a cost item. After the survey we give you a fixed price that includes the route, tolls and change of driver; the town's fees for the parking ban or signs are added depending on the destination. On request we take care of packing, furniture assembly and storage. More on our services under private move.

How we calculate your move to Belgium
Clear items instead of lump sums
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and carry out long-distance moves to Belgium with our own lorry; we do not have a branch in Belgium. The quote lists volume, route, second driver or overnight stop and the lorry toll; we state the municipal fees for the parking space separately depending on the destination. You take care of registration with the municipality and vehicle registration yourself – we tell you what is due when. For moves to the capital region we also factor in the Brussels low emission zone. Further destinations can be found in the Locations overview.

Part loads: move affordably
For smaller loads we offer a shared load: your belongings travel together with other consignments towards Belgium. This lowers the price considerably but requires flexibility on the delivery day – ideal for students, commuters or a furnished room.

Route,
tolls, parking space
On a move abroad, cost items are added that do not exist within Germany: the Belgian lorry toll, low emission zones in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent, and parking permits with their own lead times in each town. Customs is not one of them – within the EU, household goods travel duty-free. If you take a car with you, factor in Belgian registration later on. What the route and driving times from Berlin look like is described in the guide Long-distance move to Belgium.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of a move to Belgium
No customs, but paperwork after the move
Since Belgium is a member of the EU, there is no customs clearance and no import duty for private household goods. An inventory list is still useful, for liability and unpacking. If you take a car with you, you need a Belgian number plate after being entered in the National Register: notification to customs (e705), a technical inspection and registration with the DIV.
What matters is registration with the municipality (commune/gemeente) of your new home; official guides state eight working days after moving in. As an EU citizen you receive the registration certificate (Annex 19), after which the police visit to check your residence.
Special features of life in Belgium
Belgium impresses with its central location in Europe, three official languages and a high quality of life in cities such as Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent. For removal companies this also means particular challenges such as narrow old-town streets and limited parking in many city centres, which require careful logistics planning.
The flat search in Belgium also differs from Germany: tenancy agreements are often concluded for nine years, although shorter terms are also possible. We recommend finding out early about the regional differences between Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels so you can find the right place for your fresh start.

Cost factors in the move
The most important criteria for calculating the price are the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged at €3.95/km. The floor and a lift also play a role, as does a possible parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.

Cost of moving to Belgium: lorry toll and low emission zones
What a move from Berlin to Belgium costs depends not only on volume and floor but also on the destination region. Two items differ depending on the road and the town: the lorry toll and the low emission zones.
Lorry toll: the distance-based charge operated by Viapass applies to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes carrying goods. It is levied on roads in Flanders, the Brussels-Capital Region and on the roads in Wallonia managed by SOFICO. Viapass points out that the rates changed on 1 July 2026 and will change again on 1 January 2027. For moves at the end of December and the beginning of January the calculation may therefore differ.
Low emission zones: according to lez.brussels, the Brussels Low Emission Zone covers all cars, vans and buses registered in Belgium or abroad. Diesel vehicles must meet at least Euro 6, petrol vehicles at least Euro 3; a day pass costs 35 euros and is available a maximum of 24 times per year per vehicle. Ghent city centre is also a low emission zone: cameras check automatically, and foreign vehicles register via the city's LEZ tool.
We clarify which zone your destination address touches during planning. Destinations in smaller towns such as Turnhout, Verviers or Wavre are described in separate guides.
Belgium: applying for a no-parking zone at the destination in Brussels and Ghent
In Belgium, a parking space for the removal van is a matter for the town, and the rules differ. Two examples according to the city portals:
City of Brussels: renting no-parking signs alone does not reserve a parking space. First you need a permit for the temporary use of public road space via the regional Osiris platform. You then rent the signs from the city; the application must be received at least ten working days before they are put up. The city states 114.03 euros for one day and 14.87 euros for each additional day. The signs may be used Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They cannot be put up in pedestrian zones.
City of Ghent: for a move or delivery you need a permit to use public space. For the parking lane you apply no later than 15 days before the start; if the carriageway, cycle path or pavement is also used, no later than 26 days before. The application is made online via innames.stad.gent with itsme or eID. According to the city, use for moves is free of charge until 1 January 2027. You put up the signs yourself no later than 48 hours before the start or rent them; for use from 1 January 2027, the city itself puts up the E1 and E3 no-parking signs.
General information on the process can be found in our guide to the parking restriction zone, and customs questions in the guide to customs and formalities.
