Moving to Belgium: Process & Tips

From Berlin to Belgium
Moving to Belgium: route, tolls and parking at the destination
To Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent
A move to Belgium above all requires good transport planning: by road it is around 756 km from Berlin to Brussels and around 726 km to Antwerp. Our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen accompanies you from the survey to the last box in your new home in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent. On request we take care of your private move with packing, transport and furniture assembly at the destination. Within the EU there are no customs formalities; what needs clarifying is the date, parking and access.
For long-distance moves abroad we plan the journey, breaks and arrival in advance: at a good 750 km, one driver's driving time is not enough for a single day, and lorries over 3.5 t pay a distance-based toll in Belgium. You register with the municipality yourself after arrival; we tell you which documents you should have in your hand luggage. That way you avoid typical mistakes on an international move.

What we clarify before the journey to Belgium
Route, tolls, access
At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we clarify before you book how your move to Belgium will work in practice: which route does the lorry take, when does it arrive, may it park in front of the house, and will the furniture fit through the stairwell or window? After that you receive a fixed price. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB, limited to €620 per cubic metre; for valuable items, additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

From
planning to assembly
An international move raises two kinds of questions: formalities in the destination country and the transport itself. The formalities – registering with the municipality, the residence check, your car and health insurance – are explained in our checklist for emigrating to Belgium. This guide to the long-distance move to Belgium is about route, driving times, tolls, parking in front of the new house and the furniture lift. That way you are well prepared and can approach your move calmly.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Belgium
No customs, but a distance toll: the journey to Belgium
As an EU member state, Belgium is part of the single market; there is no customs clearance and no import duty on your household goods when moving from Germany. The lorry drives from Berlin west along the A2 and, depending on the destination, on via Aachen or the Lower Rhine; it is around 756 km to Brussels and around 726 km to Antwerp. Lorries over 3.5 t pay tolls in Germany and, since 2016, a distance-based toll in Belgium, which is billed via Viapass.
Because a driver may drive for no more than 9 hours a day, Brussels cannot be reached by lorry in one day's driving: we plan with an overnight stop or a second driver. You carry your ID, tenancy agreement and important documents yourself in your hand luggage. That way your belongings cross the border without stopping and arrive as planned.
Arrival in Belgium: parking, stairs, registration
At the destination, access determines how things go: whether a parking ban for the removal van can be set up in front of the house is decided by the municipality; clarify this early, because parking space is scarce in Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent. Many town houses have narrow stairs, in which case a furniture lift is used. Photos of the entrance, stairwell and windows help us plan this in advance.
After moving in, you register with the municipal administration of your new place of residence; official guides give eight working days for this. Which steps follow – the residence check, the electronic card, your car and health insurance – is set out in our checklist for emigrating to Belgium. You should arrange electricity, water and internet early.

How the price of your move is made up
The volume of your furniture and boxes is the basis of every calculation, supplemented by the distance, which is factored in at €4.10/km. Whether there is a lift or several floors have to be climbed also affects the price. If you would like furniture assembly or a shared load, simply book these extras as well.
