A Student Move: What to Look Out For

Student moves
Student move: how to recognise a good quote
and what else counts
A student move usually involves little volume but a lot of uncertainty: what is in the quote, what gets added on moving day, who pays if the desk gets a scratch? First make sure that the quote is in writing and lists the services individually – carrying, transport, dismantling and reassembly, parking restriction. Reliable quotes are based on an inventory check via photos, video or a survey, not on an estimate over the phone. And compare fixed price with fixed price, not with an hourly rate.
In a student move, the start of semester and the flat handover are often tightly scheduled. So check that the floor, lift and carrying distance are stated correctly in the quote – if they differ on moving day, the price may change. Ask about liability: a moving company is liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. If you are also having your family's household moved as well as your own room, you will find more under private move.

A written quote with a fixed price
After photos or a survey
Call 01625978461 or send photos of your furniture and the stairwell. After the inventory check you receive a written quote with a fixed price for your student move, listing the services individually. That way you can compare it with others at your leisure.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Six points to look out for
These six points separate a reliable quote for a student move from one that becomes more expensive on moving day. Go through them before you sign – it takes ten minutes and saves arguments.

With a shared load, watch the delivery day
For small loads over a long distance, a shared load is often cheaper. Make sure the delivery time window is stated in the quote and plan the first nights accordingly – your things travel with other consignments on the same route.

What
matters with route and scope
A student move within Berlin has different pitfalls from a move to a university in another city. In the city, parking, floor and house rules count; on a long route, the delivery date and loading space. You will find routes from Berlin under long-distance moves. When a shared load is worthwhile for students, you can read in the article shared load for students.

Questions you should clarify beforehand
Process of a typical student move
A student move starts with a short inventory check: moving volume, floor, lift and parking situation at both addresses. You then receive a written fixed-price quote; check that all the details are correct. On moving day we take care of carrying, transport and, on request, packing and assembly in the new flat.
With tight schedules around the start of semester, make sure that moving out and moving in do not fall on the same short morning and that the key handover for the old flat is only scheduled after it has been cleared. On request we also pack and unpack the boxes.
Keeping an eye on costs
The costs of a student move depend mainly on the moving volume, distance, floor and extra services. With a fixed price after an inventory check, the amount stays the same as long as the scope does not change. Check whether the parking restriction and assembly are included.
A practical tip: sort things out before the inventory check, not afterwards. Then the volume in the quote is correct, and you do not pay for furniture that is not coming along anyway. Enquiring outside the weeks around the start of semester makes choosing a date easier.
This is what your move really costs
The moving costs depend heavily on the size of the flat. For a 1-room flat we start from €375, for a 2-room flat the price is from €589. A 3-room flat comes to from €915, while a 4-room flat costs from €1,329. For a house or a villa we prepare an individual quote for you. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.20/km. It is best to have a personal quote prepared as part of a free survey.
These factors determine your moving price
- Distance: from €4.20/km
- Total volume of your belongings
- Floor without a lift
- Need for a parking restriction zone
Additional options: furniture assembly, shared load.
