Student Move: Frequently Asked Questions

Student moves
Student move: what students want to know beforehand
Answers before moving in
Before a student move, almost always the same questions come up: what does it cost for a room in a shared flat? How long does it take? Who is liable if the monitor gets a crack? Is a shared load worth it if your studies start in another city? This page collects the answers in one place. At its core, a student move is a small household move – more on the basics can be found under private move. Below you will find twelve questions with short, concrete answers.
Some answers do not depend on us but on the law: registration at your new place of residence is due within two weeks of moving in. For damage to your belongings, a moving company is liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. And the broadcasting fee is paid by only one person per household. Other answers depend on your move – floor, lift, distance. We clarify these in a short inventory check by phone or via photos.

Six answers at a glance
If you do not have time for all twelve questions: these are the six answers most often needed for a student move – from the deadline at the registration office to liability during transport. Everything is covered in more detail further down.
When to enquire?
Who is liable?
How is the price set?
Where to register?
Broadcasting fee?
Shared load or your own van?
Question: is a shared load worth it?
A shared load is worthwhile when a few pieces of furniture and boxes are going a long way – for example at the start of your studies in another city. Your things share the loading space with other consignments on the same route. The catch: the delivery date has a few days of flexibility.

The
questions by topic
The questions about a student move revolve around three topics: how do I plan it (timing, volume, vehicle)? How does the transport work (carrying, liability, shared load)? And what needs to be done afterwards (registration, main residence, broadcasting fee)? For moving to a university town outside Berlin, you will find routes under long-distance moves. What applies to the broadcasting fee after the move is explained in the article updating your broadcasting fee address.

Twelve questions about student moves
How does a student move work?
It starts with a short inventory check of your moving volume by phone, photos or video call. You then receive a fixed price; if the scope does not change, it stays that way. On moving day we take care of loading and unloading, transport and, on request, dismantling and reassembling larger furniture such as a bed or wardrobe.
In student residences and shared flats, time slots and parking spaces are often limited. So check in advance whether the house rules set fixed times and whether a parking restriction is needed. A flatshare room is then often moved in a few hours – depending on floor, lift and distance.
How can you save on a student move?
The costs depend mainly on volume, distance, floor and lift. If you are flexible with the date and do not choose the last day before the start of semester, you have more choice. For small loads over a long distance, a shared load lowers the costs compared with a transport of your own.
You also save if you pack yourself, sort things out beforehand and get the packing materials yourself. Furniture assembly and the packing service are extra services that you can book individually or leave out. What is included in the fixed price is stated in the quote. Also think about the incidental costs of the move: the new deposit (at most three months' rent, payable in three instalments), a possible parking restriction and, where applicable, second home tax in your university town.

What does my move really cost?
Several factors count for a realistic cost estimate: the volume of your household goods, the distance to be covered (from €4.20/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also needed to make the transport run smoothly. Furniture assembly and a shared load also affect the final price.
