Part load

Part load: when it is worth it and when it is not

Volume, route, time

Unsere Firma Part load or your own transport: weigh up volume, distance, flexibility on dates and liability.

With a part load, several customers share a van or lorry that is heading in the desired direction anyway. The free load volume is used, so you pay for only part of the journey instead of a whole vehicle. How much you save depends on the route, volume and capacity utilisation – the advantage is clearest with few belongings on long long-distance moves. We coordinate your part load and give you the price after the survey or based on your inventory list.

The advantage lies in route planning: instead of a half-empty lorry for one household, the capacity of several jobs is bundled – this saves money and empty runs. The prerequisite is flexibility on timing, as the transport is linked to other jobs. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB with a part load too (€620 per m³). We give you the fixed price in advance so that you know what costs to expect.

HONEST ADVICE

How we plan part loads

The right route, a clear time window

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and bundle jobs on routes we drive anyway – that is how we can offer suitable part-load dates. We are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB) on shared trips too (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. Our removal helpers secure every load with straps and blankets so that nothing slips. We give you the price in advance as a fixed price – whether single transport or part load.

Packing service

With a part load your boxes stand next to other people's; well padded and labelled, they arrive safely – on request we pack for you with our packing service.

Assembly service

Dismantled furniture needs less load space and therefore fewer cubic metres – this lowers the price of your part load; we take care of reassembly with furniture assembly.

Time window

Instead of a fixed day, we agree a time window for collection and delivery and tell you in good time when we will ring the bell.

Furniture transport

Single items such as a sofa, wardrobe or a piece of furniture bought in another city are typical cases where a part load pays off for furniture transport.
FAIRLY CALCULATED

How to recognise a good part load

Transparency, reliability and fair prices are at the heart of every part load: a clear time window, a price based on volume and the same liability as with your own transport.

01

Low volume

The fewer cubic metres your belongings need, the more likely a part load pays off – a room in a shared flat or individual pieces of furniture almost always fit in.
02

Long route

On long routes the journey makes up a large share of the price; that is where sharing the load space saves the most. Within the same city a small move is often worthwhile.
03

Flexible date

If you have a few days' leeway, you fit best into the route of other jobs. A fixed day with a key handover points more towards a single transport.
04

Same liability

With a part load, too, the company is liable under the HGB at €620 per cubic metre – but with a small volume the limit is correspondingly low.
05

Protect valuables

If a single item is worth more than the statutory limit, such as a designer piece, additional insurance is worth taking out before collection.
06

Clear agreements

The time window, carrying into the flat and the floor belong in the quote – then the low price is still low on delivery day.
IN SHORT

When a part load fits

Three questions before booking

A part load is suitable for small moving volumes and customers with some flexibility on timing. It is less suitable if the move has to take place on a fixed day with a key handover or the entire household is moving – then your own transport is often more economical.

ALTERNATIVES

When
a part load does not fit

Other ways to reach your destination

If a part load does not fit – for instance because the date is fixed or the household is too large – there are alternatives: a complete private move with its own vehicle, a long-distance move with a fixed delivery day or a combination with storage. You can read how a part load and your own van compare in cost in the article Part load or your own van.

Small households

A room in a shared flat, a single apartment, furniture for your first flat of your own: for a private move, senior move or student move with little volume, a part load is often the cheapest choice.

Individual pieces of furniture

An heirloom from another city or a second-hand sofa: with a packing service and safe furniture transport by part load, this becomes a plannable small transport without a vehicle of your own.

When it is better not to

Fixed dates and large volumes speak against a part load. For an office move, company relocation or public authority move, your own transport is usually better; for single items there remain the part load and the furniture taxi.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions: is a part load worth it?

Answers on savings, volume, dates, liability, booking and minimum distance.
With a part load, your belongings are carried together with other consignments in a lorry that is already travelling on the desired route. As a result, several customers share the transport costs, which lowers the price considerably. This method is particularly suitable for smaller moving volumes and flexible dates where exclusive use of a vehicle is not necessary.

Who is a part load really worth it for?

A part load suits students, singles or couples with a manageable amount of belongings who do not need a whole lorry. It is also often the cheapest option for individual pieces of furniture, for instance after a purchase in another city. Those who are flexible on timing and do not depend on a fixed date benefit most.

On long-distance moves between larger cities in particular, costs can be saved by combining several jobs. We will tell you when you enquire whether a suitable trip is currently planned on your route; information on the service can be found under Part load.

What to look out for with a part load

With a part load, plan in a time buffer, as the transport takes place not on your preferred day but within an agreed time window. Clarify in advance how much load volume you need, as this determines the price. Good packing and dismantled furniture make shared loading easier and save cubic metres.

Also pay attention to liability: under the HGB it amounts to €620 per cubic metre of load space your belongings need – so for 5 m³ a maximum of €3,100. For valuable individual items, additional insurance is worthwhile. For a complete private move on a fixed date, we recommend single transport under Private move.

For comparison: our prices for your own transport

Whether a single flat or a large villa – the price range of our services is broad. For a 1-room flat you pay from €349, for 2 rooms from €615, for 3 rooms from €915 and for 4 rooms from €1,324. For houses and villas we always prepare an individual quote, and long-distance moves are charged by the kilometre – from €3.90/km. We calculate a part load by volume; we give you the price after a free survey or based on your inventory list.

What determines the price – with and without a part load

The price of your move depends largely on the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is usually charged from €3.90/km. The floor, whether there is a lift and a required parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also play a role. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can further affect the price.
