Partial move

Partial move by shared load: pay only for what travels

Process and liability

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and takes individual pieces of furniture as a shared load when a van is driving the route anyway.

Not every move involves the whole household. After a separation only half the furniture moves out, or a bed and desk are enough for a second home. For such partial moves, a moving van of your own is often not worth it. With a shared load, your things travel on a route that is being driven anyway – you only pay your share of the loading space. Everything is still secured just as in a private move.

For a shared load, as with every move, we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of loading space – so up to €1,860 for three cubic metres. For more valuable items, additional insurance is possible. Because several consignments are bundled on one route, there is a time window for collection and delivery instead of a fixed day, which we agree with you beforehand. More about the service can be found under shared load.

How we handle shared loads

Bundled trips from Berlin

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a partial move by shared load, take your furniture and boxes along on trips from or to Berlin that are scheduled anyway. We give you the price in advance as a fixed price, calculated by volume and route. Every item is secured with blankets and straps so that it does not slide around next to other people's belongings. For damage we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. We agree the collection and delivery windows with you beforehand so that someone is present at both addresses.

Packed safe for transport

With a shared load, your goods sit next to other goods. With our packing service we pack furniture and boxes so that they survive the journey safely.

Individual items

Sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers: individual items travel by furniture transport without a whole van being on the road for them alone.

Dismantling and reassembly

We dismantle large furniture before the shared load and reassemble it at the destination – with a move with assembly, this is an item in the fixed price.

Time window instead of a fixed date

Because several consignments are bundled, there is a time window. If you need a fixed day, you are better off booking a transport of your own.
WELL PREPARED

Six points before the shared load

A partial move by shared load runs smoothly if it is clear beforehand what is travelling, when it will be collected and who will be waiting at the destination address. These six points help.

01

List of items

Write down what is travelling, with approximate dimensions. The list gives the volume – and therefore the price of the shared load.
02

Photos of the condition

Photograph furniture before collection. In the event of damage, the pictures document the condition before transport.
03

Plan for the time window

Collection and delivery have a few days of flexibility. Plan so that someone can receive the furniture at the new address.
04

Take valuables yourself

Jewellery, documents and cash do not belong in a shared load. For antiques or art, additional insurance is worthwhile.
05

Clarify access

State the floor, lift and parking options at both addresses. In narrow streets, a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) helps.
06

Report damage immediately

Report visible damage by the day after delivery at the latest, hidden damage within 14 days (§ 451f HGB) – otherwise claims lapse.
SHARED CARGO SPACE

How a shared load works

Travel along instead of a van of your own

A shared load works when only a few pieces of furniture or boxes are being transported and a moving van of your own would be uneconomical. Your partial move travels with other consignments on the same route; that way the costs are shared. In return, you need some flexibility on the delivery day.

THE RIGHT CHOICE

Partial
move, shared load or complete move?

By amount, route and date

Whether a shared load, your own transport or a complete move depends on the amount, route and date. For the whole household, the private move is the better choice; for long routes with a dedicated van there are long-distance moves. Because of its weight and fragility, a piano belongs with piano transport. How to prepare individual pieces of furniture for a shared load is explained in the article sending furniture as a shared load.

When a shared load works

Few pieces of furniture, a long distance, a flexible delivery day: then a partial move by shared load is usually cheaper than a van of your own. Typical cases are a separation, a second home, furniture for the children or a follow-up delivery.

When it does not

If you need a fixed day, a lot of loading space or a furniture transport within one city, your own transport or a small transport usually makes more sense – bundling then brings hardly any savings.

Price and liability

The fixed price depends on volume and route. Liability applies as with every move: €620 per cubic metre under § 451e HGB, and additional insurance for valuables. Report damage within the deadlines under § 451f HGB.

FAQ

Questions about partial moves by shared load

Process, costs, delivery time, long distance, items, liability and booking – answered briefly.
With a shared load, your belongings are transported together with other customers' goods on a planned route. Several customers thus share the loading space and transport costs of a lorry. This is particularly suitable for partial moves with a small volume, where a moving van of your own would be uneconomical. Carrying, securing and liability are the same as with any move.

What is a partial move by shared load?

In a partial move by shared load, your belongings are transported together with other customers' goods on a planned route. Instead of booking a lorry just for a few pieces of furniture, you share the loading space and therefore the transport costs. This is worthwhile above all for smaller amounts or individual items over longer distances.

Typical occasions are moving out of a flatshare room, a separation in which only part of the furniture moves, or a follow-up delivery after a move that has already taken place. Because the routes are bundled, you receive a fixed price and a time window instead of a fixed day; liability is governed by § 451e HGB.

Who benefits most from a shared load?

A shared load is worthwhile for students, weekend commuters with a second home and anyone who only wants to transport individual pieces of furniture. The longer the route, the greater the advantage over a transport of your own, as a rule. Those who are flexible on the delivery day benefit most.

Businesses that want to take individual items of office furniture or equipment to a new site also use shared loads. We drive from Berlin; whether a suitable trip is scheduled for your route, we will tell you when you enquire. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview.

Calculating moving costs: the basics

If you want to estimate your moving price, you should take into account the volume, distance (from €3.85/km), floor and lift. A parking restriction zone can also cause additional costs. Extra services such as furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.
