Student Move Checklist: Forget Nothing

Student moves
Ticking off a student move: from tenancy agreement to registration certificate
The checklist for the start of term
In a student move, the transport rarely goes wrong – what gets forgotten is more often the notice on the old place, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) or the mail forwarding order. That is why a list in three blocks is worthwhile: four weeks ahead (notice, deposit, date, boxes), on moving day (keys, meter readings, handover report) and afterwards (registration, broadcasting fee, address changes). If you tick off the points one after another, you won't be sitting among boxes and official letters at the start of term, but in your own room.
A few points have fixed deadlines: you must register within two weeks of moving in, with ID and landlord confirmation from the landlord or halls of residence. The deposit may be no more than three months' rent (excluding service charge prepayments) and can be paid in three monthly instalments. What we take care of for students – carrying, transport, dismantling and reassembly – is described under Student move; you handle the other points on the list yourself.

Put the moving date on the list early
Dates are scarce at the start of term
Send photos of your furniture or call 01625978461: after the short inventory you get a fixed price for your student move. Whether a special offer currently applies to you, we will tell you when you enquire. The sooner the date is fixed, the more easily the other points on your list can be arranged around it.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Which points we take off your hands
Carrying, driving, assembling
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a student move, take care of the physical part: carrying furniture through the narrow stairwell, the transport and, if you wish, dismantling and reassembling the bed, wardrobe and desk. The formalities – notice, registration, broadcasting fee – stay with you; that is what this list is for. We give the price as a fixed price after the inventory. We are liable for damage to belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; take your laptop and documents with you yourself, and valuables too.

Six points that are often missing
Most lists include boxes and tape. These six points, on the other hand, are often missing – and cost money or nerves later if they get lost in the bustle of a student move.

Plan for the deposit
Handover report
Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
Broadcasting licence fee
Mail forwarding order
Only a few boxes? Shared load
If your list only has a bed, a shelf and ten boxes for another university city, a shared load is an option: your things travel with other consignments on the same route. For this you need a few days' flexibility on the delivery date – so put it in your plan early.

Before,
on the day, afterwards
A list only helps if the order is right: notice and deposit first, then the date and boxes, keys and report on moving day, then the authorities. If you are moving a whole flat, you will find more under private move; if you are going to another city to study, also plan the route – information under long-distance moves. How high a deposit may be and when you get it back is explained in the article Rental deposit: amount and repayment.

Questions about the moving checklist
Working through the list step by step
Start two to three weeks before the date, or correspondingly earlier with a three-month notice period. First sort out notice and deposit, then the moving date and boxes. When packing, labelling by room and contents helps; ID, tenancy agreement and laptop go into a bag of their own that doesn't go into the vehicle. Pack books in small boxes so they stay easy to carry.
On moving day we carry and transport, while you record the meter readings and the condition of the old flat in the handover report. After that you have two weeks to register where you study. Old furniture that isn't coming along is best sold or given away beforehand – then you don't have to dispose of it. Also remember to transfer or cancel the old flat's electricity and internet contracts in good time.
What the list costs – and where you save
The costs of a student move depend on volume, floor, lift and distance; after the inventory you get a fixed price. Our guide prices by number of rooms are in the overview below; a single shared-flat room we calculate according to what actually has to be carried. You can save by packing yourself, sorting out beforehand and not putting the date on the last day before term starts.
The additional costs of the move also belong on the list: the new deposit, a possible parking restriction and, if you are only registered with a secondary residence where you study, second-home tax – in Berlin, since 2025, 20% of the net basic rent. With few things and a long distance, a shared load is often cheaper than a van of your own, if the delivery day has a few days' flexibility.

Moving costs in detail: the influencing factors
The volume is the biggest cost driver, followed by the distance (from €4.10/km). The floor, lift and any parking restriction zone also affect the final price. If needed, we add shared load or furniture assembly.
