A business relocation begins long before the first box – with the old lease. If it is for a fixed term, it ends on the agreed date; if it is open-ended, you give notice on commercial premises no later than the third working day of a quarter, effective at the end of the following quarter (§ 580a BGB). That is almost six months. In the same step, check what has to be removed or restored when you move out. Around three months beforehand, you clarify the new premises: does the approved use suit your business, are electricity and water sufficient? Panel doctors apply to the admissions committee (Zulassungsausschuss) to relocate their practice.

Around eight weeks beforehand comes the survey of both addresses, followed by the fixed price; book the electrician and plumber at the same time. Four to six weeks beforehand we apply for the parking restriction zone – in Berlin processing takes about four weeks. Two weeks beforehand you inform customers, suppliers and your bank.
