Anyone with a care level (Pflegegrad) can apply to the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) for a grant for measures to improve the living environment – up to €4,180 per measure under § 40 Abs. 4 SGB XI, and this must be done before the move.

As soon as it becomes clear that a move despite illness will be necessary, it is worth contacting a moving company early. The sooner the date is fixed, the better staff, vehicle and parking restriction zone can be planned. Also clarify early with the landlord or the new residential complex when the lift may be used, and with the medical supply store who will move the care bed or aids.
A well-thought-out schedule takes the pressure off and gives you peace for your recovery. Plan medical appointments, rest periods and moving day together and leave a buffer for days when things do not work. If a care level has been assessed, apply to the care insurance fund before you place the order and enclose a cost estimate. Also check whether the new flat is low-barrier: lift, steps at the entrance, door widths and shower decide how well you will manage there.
Practical tips for a move due to illness
Pack important documents such as doctor's letters, prescriptions and insurance papers separately and keep them to hand. A small emergency bag with medication, water and contact details stays with you on moving day, not in the removal van. Talk openly about your physical limits so that breaks and work steps can be planned around them.
If possible, a trusted person should be there on moving day to make decisions and react if needed. Pack in several small stages instead of on a single day, or hand over the packing entirely. That way the move when you are ill remains physically manageable and much less stressful. Also decide who will drop by, do the shopping and help with putting things away in the first few days after moving in – especially after an operation, this support is often more important than any box.
