Moving checklist: every task at a glance

Moving checklist
The moving checklist: every task in four phases
Four phases, every task
A move involves many small and large tasks that can easily make you lose track. With a structured moving checklist you plan every step in good time and avoid last-minute stress. From giving notice on your old flat and re-registering to transporting your furniture – we show you what really matters. Whether it is a private move or a move to a new city, good preparation saves time, money and nerves.
Many points on the list have fixed deadlines: three months to give notice on a rented flat, around four weeks' processing for a parking restriction in Berlin, two weeks after moving in for registration. We take on the tasks relating to transport and point out these dates to you during the survey. Details of our services can be found on the Private move page. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

What makes a good moving checklist
A good checklist is sorted by timing and names deadlines. We align our dates accordingly so that every item can be completed in good time.
Deadlines first
Remember the contracts
Documents kept separate
A structured moving day
A buffer for changes
After moving in
Part load: an item of its own on the list
For smaller moving volumes a part load (Beiladung) is often worthwhile, with your belongings transported together with other consignments. Your checklist then also needs to include the agreed time window and your availability on the delivery day.

From
giving notice to registration
Alongside the classic moving checklist there are many other topics that matter for a successful move. These include the right packaging for furniture, organising parking restriction zones or the particular features of a long-distance move. You can find more about moves over long distances on the Long-distance moves page. If you look into these topics early, you save valuable time on moving day and avoid unnecessary stress.

Frequently asked questions about the moving checklist
8–6 weeks before the move: the right preparation
Start organising early to avoid unnecessary stress. Notice on your rented flat should already have been given by now – the statutory notice period is three months. Find out about your new address and obtain the first quotes from a moving company. You should also apply early for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) for moving day, especially in large cities with limited parking space.
Also use this phase to review old contracts such as internet, electricity or insurance and transfer them in good time; set up mail forwarding shortly afterwards. Draw up an inventory list of your furniture to estimate the effort of the move realistically. Planning early also secures you the best dates with in-demand moving companies.
Moving day: the final checklist for a smooth process
On the actual moving day every minute counts – a clear structure helps you keep track. Make sure all boxes are labelled, important documents are to hand and the electricity and water meter readings have been noted. Our team takes care of the professional transport of your furniture and ensures a safe, swift process.
After the transport, a joint flat handover with a written report is advisable to avoid later disputes. Also check whether all furniture has arrived undamaged: report visible transport damage by the day after delivery at the latest, and hidden damage within 14 days. That way your move ends without unpleasant surprises.
On the list: the budget for transport

The details the quote for your move needs
The volume of your furniture and boxes is the basis of every calculation, supplemented by the distance, which is factored in at €4.25/km. Whether there is a lift or several floors have to be climbed also affects the price. If you would like furniture assembly or a part load, you simply book these extras as well.
