FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

Summer holidays

Six weeks off school – and everyone wants to move

Planning early pays off

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit and plans your holiday move with a buffer for heat and holiday traffic.

For families, the summer holidays are the obvious time: no child misses lessons, and there is time to settle in before the first day of school. In Berlin they run from 1 July to 14 August in 2027 and from 1 July to 12 August in 2028. The dates are set for each federal state by the Standing Conference of Education Ministers (Kultusministerkonferenz); if your family is moving to another state, it is worth checking the holidays there – Bavaria, for example, is only off from 2 August to 13 September in 2027. For a private move this means: fix the date early, because many families think the same way.

With a long-distance move, a summer rule applies on top: from 1 July to 31 August, lorries over 7.5 tonnes may not drive on many motorways on Saturdays between 7 am and 8 pm, including the A9 from the Berlin ring road to Munich (holiday travel regulation, Ferienreiseverordnung). On Sundays the driving ban applies anyway. A long-distance move is therefore better scheduled on a weekday. An early start, shade for delicate items and enough water for everyone help against the heat; candles, medication and electronics should not be left for hours in a hot vehicle. How the lorry gets a parking space in front of the door is explained under parking restriction zone.

Request a holiday date early

Fixed price after a survey – secure your preferred date in time

The holiday period is among the busiest moving weeks of the year. So enquire six to eight weeks in advance, so that weekdays are still free and there is enough time for the parking restriction zone. After the survey we give you a fixed price in which the parking restriction zone, assembly and materials are listed separately. Call us on 01625978461 or use the contact form.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

SUMMER RULES

Four things that are different in summer

Date, traffic, heat, school

A move in July or August differs from one in November mainly in demand, traffic and temperature. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and plan holiday moves with an earlier start, drinks breaks and a buffer for holiday traffic. We state the fixed price after the survey, once volume, floors and parking restriction zone are known. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for very valuable items, additional insurance makes sense. How private moves work with us is described on the service page.

High demand

The start of the holidays, the end of the month and Saturdays are booked up first. A weekday in the middle of the holidays has the best chance.

Lorry driving bans

Lorries over 7.5 t: banned on many motorways on Saturdays 7 am–8 pm in July and August, and all day on Sundays. Plan long-distance moves during the week.

Heat

Start early, provide drinks, do not leave delicate items such as candles, medication and electronics in the sun.

School and nursery

Sort out registration at the new school before the holidays – in summer many school offices have limited staffing.
MAKE USE OF THE HOLIDAYS

Six tips for a holiday move

The holidays offer time that families do not otherwise have. To leave some of it for rest, a clear order of things helps – plus a few precautions against heat, traffic jams and fully booked dates. The following six points have proved their worth in family moves.

01

Date by Easter

Anyone who wants to move in July should fix the survey and date by spring at the latest – weekdays are still free then.
02

Parking restriction in good time

In summer, roadworks and day-trippers occupy the parking spaces. A parking restriction zone is applied for in advance at the road traffic authority.
03

Start early in the morning

Heavy furniture is easier to carry in the cool morning hours. The afternoon is left for boxes and assembly.
04

Involve the children

Older children pack their own bedroom, small children spend moving day with grandparents or friends.
05

Buffer before school starts

Do not schedule the move for the last week of the holidays. A week's buffer remains for re-registering, setting up and the first trips to school.
06

Do not forget to re-register

Within two weeks of moving in, you must register at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) – in the holidays too, so book appointments early.
FOR SMALL LOADS

When only one room is moving

If only one room is moving – the older child starting an apprenticeship or university, for example – a shared load over a long distance can be cheaper than a lorry of your own. Your goods travel with other consignments in the same direction; in return there is a time window instead of a fixed day.

FAMILY MOVE

What is coming up in the holiday weeks

A move during the summer holidays divides well into three stages: the weeks before the holidays with date, parking restriction zone and school registration, the moving week itself, and the days up to the first day of school. What to bear in mind when changing school and nursery is covered in the guide Re-registering nursery and school. Do not plan the moving week right at the start of the holidays, when the roads are full and many dates are already taken.

Before the holidays

The survey, fixed price and moving day are fixed in spring. Before the holidays, register the children at the new school or nursery, apply for the parking restriction zone and cancel electricity and internet for the private move – then the holidays are left for the move itself.

The moving week

Pack room by room and the children's room last, so that toys are there until the end. On moving day the team starts early with the heavy furniture transport; drinks and shade for everyone make the day more bearable.

Up to the first day of school

Set up the children's room first, walk the route to school together, re-register at the citizens' office within two weeks. A week's buffer before school starts prevents the first day of school from beginning in box chaos.

FAQ

Questions about moving in the holidays

Date, costs, heat, children, driving bans and parking restriction zone – briefly answered.
The summer holidays allow a family move without having to consider school times, because children are off during this period. The good weather and longer daylight hours also make for ideal moving conditions. Many families use these weeks to settle calmly into the new surroundings before school starts again.

Why the summer holidays are popular – and when it gets tight

The summer holidays are ideal for families: children miss no lessons and get to know the new surroundings before school starts. In Germany the holidays are staggered; Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein form one group of states, and the other states come before or after. Berlin is off from 1 July to 14 August in 2027.

It gets tight at the start of the holidays and at the end of the month, when many tenancies change. Anyone planning a private move in the middle of the holidays and during the week has more choice. Also expect full motorways and high temperatures.

Driving bans, heat and parking restriction zone

For long-distance moves in summer, the holiday travel regulation (Ferienreiseverordnung) applies: from 1 July to 31 August, lorries over 7.5 tonnes and lorries with trailers may not drive on Saturdays from 7 am to 8 pm on the motorway sections listed there – these include the A9 from the Berlin ring road to Munich and parts of the A2, A3, A5 and A7. On Sundays and public holidays, the driving ban under § 30 StVO applies to these lorries from midnight to 10 pm.

Anyone planning a long-distance move should therefore schedule it on a working day. In the city, the parking restriction zone matters more: apply for it in good time so that the lorry stands directly at the door and nobody has to carry for long in the heat.
