Moving at the weekend: pros and cons

Weekend move
Saturday yes, Sunday rarely: moving at the weekend
Pros and cons
Moving at the weekend is popular with working people because no day of leave is needed and friends are more likely to have time. Legally, however, a distinction must be made: Saturday is a normal working day, and moving companies work as usual. On Sundays and public holidays, employees may in principle not be employed under § 9 ArbZG, and lorries over 7.5 t may not operate commercially between midnight and 10 pm under § 30 StVO. Sunday moves with a company are therefore the exception.
For a private move with friends, Sunday is possible, but many house rules require quiet; talk to the property management and neighbours beforehand. Saturdays are in demand and booked up early. Whether a surcharge applies for a Saturday date is stated in our quote – we quote the fixed price after a survey. We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

What is different at the weekend
Law, neighbours, authorities
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves within the city and as long-distance moves. A weekend move raises different questions from a move during the week: on Saturday everything is possible as usual, while on Sunday the Working Hours Act, the lorry driving ban and quiet in the building apply. The authorities are usually closed; registration follows in the two weeks afterwards. We quote the fixed price after a survey, regardless of which day you choose; we are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB. More about our private moves and long-distance moves can be found under our services.

Pros and cons at a glance
Whether moving at the weekend is worthwhile depends on your job, helpers and the house rules. These six points help you decide between Saturday, Sunday and a weekday – depending on whether you move alone, with friends or with a moving company.
No day of leave
More helpers
Less rush-hour traffic
Saturdays in demand
Offices closed
Sunday is different
Small volumes without a fixed day
For smaller volumes, a shared load is an inexpensive alternative: your household goods travel on a run that is going that way anyway. In return, a time window applies instead of a fixed day – the wish for “exactly on Saturday” cannot always be met.

Saturday,
Sunday or a weekday
Whether a private move within the city or a long-distance move with a long drive: the day of the week determines who can help, how busy the roads are and which rules apply. How to get the parking restriction in front of your door in time – also for a Saturday – is explained in our article Applying for a parking restriction zone. Routes from Berlin can be found under long-distance moves. That way you choose the day consciously.

Questions about moving at the weekend
Advantages of moving at the weekend
The biggest advantage of moving at the weekend is obvious: you do not need a day of leave and can organise the move on a day off. Friends and family are more likely to have time on Saturdays to help with carrying and packing. Rush-hour traffic is also lighter at the weekend, which makes journeys between the old and new flats easier.
For working people with fixed working hours, Saturday is often the most realistic option. Because it is legally a normal working day, moving companies work as usual; we quote the fixed price after the survey. That way the move can be planned reliably, without extra stress in your working week.
Disadvantages and challenges at the weekend
One disadvantage of moving at the weekend is the higher demand: Saturdays are often booked weeks in advance. The authorities are usually closed; you register within two weeks of moving in on a working day. On Sundays, there is in principle a ban on employing staff (§ 9 ArbZG), lorries over 7.5 t may not drive, and many house rules require quiet.
If you are flexible, plan early and consider alternative weekdays, especially for a long-distance move with a long driving time. For long distances, Saturday can be the loading day and Monday the unloading day; we clarify this for your preferred date during the survey.
What do you pay for your move?
The answer depends on the size: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €599, 3-room flat from €884, 4-room flat from €1,344. Houses and villas always receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves a price per kilometre applies, from €4.20/km. It is best to clarify all the details during a free survey.
How is the price composed?
First, the volume of your household goods counts. Then comes the distance, which is charged from €4.20/km. Finally, floor, lift and any parking restriction zone play an important role. For additional services we recommend furniture assembly and a shared load.
