Getting to know St. Gallen: city districts neighbourhoods, offices

Living in St. Gallen
St. Gallen for newcomers: from the Abbey District to the western neighbourhoods
Neighbourhoods, everyday life, offices
St. Gallen has just under 80,000 inhabitants and is the centre of eastern Switzerland. The city lies at an altitude of around 670 metres; the Steinach flows through the centre towards Lake Constance, and the Sitter with the Sittertobel gorge forms the boundary in the south-west. The Abbey District is world-famous: the abbey church and the abbey library are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Anyone planning a move to St. Gallen chooses between the old town, hillside locations and neighbourhoods on the edge of the city. Then there is the University of St. Gallen (HSG), which brings many students from Switzerland and abroad to the city. Banks, insurers and the cantonal administration provide jobs.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to eastern Switzerland. We quote the fixed price after the survey; you book packing, transport and furniture assembly as needed. For the Swiss border we draw up the inventory list for Form 18.44 with you. We register reserved parking spaces at the destination with the city police, and for the old town we enquire at the traffic permits counter. We are liable for your removal goods under the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance is possible. More about our services can be found under Home move.

Fixed price after a survey in Berlin
Give us your Berlin address, the neighbourhood in St. Gallen and the large pieces of furniture. After the survey you receive a fixed price; we clarify access and the parking ban at the destination with the city police in advance. If you are moving to the HSG for the start of term, it is best to enquire early, as many dates are in demand then. A room in a shared flat as a part load is also possible. You can reach us by phone on 01625978461.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of for your move into St. Gallen
Planning on both sides of the border
For us, St. Gallen is a destination abroad: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and plan every move to St. Gallen individually. In the old town the lanes are narrow and access partly requires a permit; in neighbourhoods such as Winkeln, Bruggen or Rotmonten it is mostly about the slope and access. We register reserved parking spaces with the city police. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and we are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Whether you are studying at the HSG, moving with a family or for work – we prepare the customs documents together with you.

What
newcomers to St. Gallen should know
In this guide you will learn how St. Gallen is divided into city districts and neighbourhoods, which employers and universities shape the city and where you register after moving in. We explain how to have parking spaces kept free for the removal van, where the population services are located and how to get rid of bulky waste. We do not give specific rents because they vary greatly by neighbourhood. Routes to other cities can be found under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions about living in St. Gallen
Centrum, Ost, West: city districts and neighbourhoods of St. Gallen
St. Gallen is divided into the three city districts of Centrum, Ost and West. Below these are groups of neighbourhoods such as the city centre with the old town and the Abbey District, Rosenberg, Riethüsli, St. Georgen, Rotmonten, Langgass–Heiligkreuz, St. Fiden, Notkersegg and Neudorf. In the city centre you live centrally, but the old-town lanes are narrow and only accessible to a limited extent for the removal van.
In the west of the city lie Lachen, Bruggen and Winkeln; the Sitter with the Sittertobel gorge forms the boundary in the south-west, and the Steinach flows through the centre to Lake Constance. Many neighbourhoods are on a slope; according to Wikipedia, the altitude within the city ranges from just under 500 to over 1,000 metres. Which location suits you depends on your commute, type of home and budget – we check access and the parking spot for each address individually.
Working, studying and living in St. Gallen
St. Gallen is a services centre: Raiffeisen Schweiz and St.Galler Kantonalbank have their headquarters here, along with Helvetia insurance, the social insurance institution and other banks. As the cantonal capital, St. Gallen employs many people in the administration. In everyday life you benefit from short distances to nature: Lake Constance lies to the north, and the Appenzell region with the Alpstein to the south of the city. Culture is offered by the Abbey District with its famous abbey library, among other things. Keeping a parking space free when moving in St. Gallen: city police and signage
In the city of St. Gallen, responsibility is clear: according to stadt.sg.ch, the city police must be notified to keep public parking spaces free for private moves. Signage is ordered for a fee, telephone 071 224 62 00 (office hours). The page does not state the amount, a form or a lead time, so get in touch early.
- Traffic permits counter: Monday to Friday 8:00 to 12:00, telephone +41 71 224 61 00, [email protected]
- Information counter: Vadianstrasse 57, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 18:00
- City centre contact point: Neugasse 5, Monday to Friday 10:00 to 11:30
According to the city, the centre mainly has short-stay parking spaces, supplemented by multi-storey car parks around the old town. In the outer neighbourhoods, permits in the extended blue zone (EBZ) allow longer parking; day permits can be paid with TWINT. Exemption permits are available online at parkingpay.ch or at the city police counter, and there is also a digital application form for tradespeople and catering.
We agree with you how close the lorry needs to get to the entrance so that you can order the right signage. Our long-distance move is one of the services on this route; the guide to moving to Chur describes comparable places.
Population services, waste and students when moving to St. Gallen
In St. Gallen, the residents' registration office is now called the population services (Bevölkerungsdienste) and is located in the town hall, 9001 St. Gallen (telephone +41 71 224 44 00, [email protected]). According to stadt.sg.ch, it is open Mondays to Wednesdays 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 17:00, Thursdays 12:30 to 18:00 and Fridays 12:30 to 16:30. According to the city's page "Umziehen, Melden" (moving, registering), arrivals must be registered within 14 days; for moves from abroad, the city refers there to the fact sheets of the migration office. Registration certificates and residence cards can be ordered online and are sent by post after payment.
For bulky waste, the waste advice service of Entsorgung St. Gallen is the right place: Blumenbergplatz 3, telephone +41 71 224 50 50, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 16:30. Types of waste, collection points and the collection schedule can be found on their pages.
Anyone moving to St. Gallen as a student has an advantage at customs: according to the BAZG, students may import household goods, personal effects and study materials duty-free even if they do not move their residence to Switzerland. All other cases require a change of residence and use for at least six months.
We plan small flat moves for students with our student move. If you are taking little with you, you can also consider the part load.
