St. Gallen for newcomers: the Abbey District neighbourhoods and everyday life between Rosenberg and Freudenberg

Newcomer's Guide to St. Gallen
St. Gallen: a city in the Steinach valley
The first few weeks
St. Gallen lies at around 700 metres in a valley between Rosenberg and Freudenberg; the abbey church and abbey library are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The agglomeration had more than 165,000 inhabitants in 2018. Plan your home removal with hillside locations and narrow lanes in mind.
According to the city, moving in must be reported to the population services within 14 days. We handle the move from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), and your belongings are covered under the HGB. The route and customs are described on our page Moving from Berlin to St. Gallen; more about our home removal service.

How we prepare your move
Slopes, parking, customs
St. Gallen is one of Switzerland's higher-lying cities, and many neighbourhoods lie on the slopes of Rosenberg and Freudenberg. To keep parking spaces free for the move, according to the city you inform the city police in advance; parking signs can be ordered there. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), and you declare your household goods at the border with Form 18.44. Your belongings are covered under the HGB. What
newcomers should sort out early
Besides logistics, a move to St. Gallen also involves dealing with the authorities: registration with the population services, health insurance and, for foreign nationals, the migration office. According to the city, you must deregister from your previous municipality before registering – find out which confirmation from Germany is required. When choosing between Neudorf, St. Fiden or St. Georgen, your commute and bus or rail connections count.

Questions about living in St. Gallen
Neighbourhoods of St. Gallen: from the Abbey District to Winkeln
Today's city was created in 1918 through a municipal merger: villages and hamlets of the former municipalities of Straubenzell and Tablat joined the old city, including Bruggen, Heiligkreuz, Lachen, Neudorf, Notkersegg, Riethüsli, Rotmonten, St. Fiden, St. Georgen and Winkeln. Today St. Gallen is divided into the city districts of Centrum, Ost and West, with numerous statistical neighbourhoods.
The old town with the Abbey District lies in the Steinach valley. Rotmonten lies on the Rosenberg to the north, St. Georgen and Riethüsli to the south on the Freudenberg, where the Drei Weieren ponds are a popular recreation area. Winkeln and Bruggen form the west of the city. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and how steep the streets are.
Flat hunting and work in St. Gallen
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here. Because of the University of St. Gallen (HSG), demand for flat-share rooms and studios is high, especially at the start of semester – search early and stay flexible when choosing a neighbourhood. For registration you need your tenancy agreement or a confirmation from your host.
St. Gallen is home to the headquarters of companies and institutions including Helvetia insurance, the social insurance institution, Raiffeisen Switzerland and St. Galler Kantonalbank. Besides the HSG, there is the University of Teacher Education, the University of Applied Sciences and the School of Design. We support you with the move into your new flat.
