Long-distance move to St. Gallen: route and customs
From Moabit to the Steinach
A move to St. Gallen takes you out of the EU: Switzerland is not a member, and your household goods are cleared at the border as household removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut). From our depot in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) it is 773 road kilometres – via the A9 to Nuremberg, the A6 and A7 southwards, the A96 through the Allgäu to Lindau and then via Vorarlberg into eastern Switzerland. For a lorry that is a good ten hours of pure driving time, so we plan with an overnight stop. We schedule the border crossing on a working day.
For the import you present the signed Form 18.44 and an inventory list; we draw up the list together with you while packing. In St. Gallen we register the parking spaces to be kept free with the city police. We quote the fixed price after the survey, with the heavy vehicle charge included. How your long-distance move to St. Gallen works
Four steps to unloading
First we survey your flat in Berlin and record the volume, floors and special items; this also produces the inventory list for Swiss customs. On loading day we pack and load, stay overnight on the way in line with the driving time rules and clear customs the next working day at a customs office for commercial goods. In St. Gallen we unload and assemble the furniture. Whether your destination address in the old town needs a traffic permit we clarify with the city beforehand. We are liable for your removal goods under the German Commercial Code (HGB); we discuss additional insurance in advance.

St. Gallen: parking ban, signage and old-town access
For moves in the city of St. Gallen, according to the city: public parking spaces that you want to keep free for the removal van must be registered with the city police. The city police can order the parking ban signs for a fee; the city does not state an amount or a lead time on its parking page. You can reach the city police during office hours on 071 224 62 00.
For questions about access to the old town, the city refers to the traffic permits counter at Vadianstrasse 57, open Monday to Friday from 08.00 to 12.00 (telephone +41 71 224 61 00). There you can clarify whether a permit is needed for your destination address. Exemption permits for occupational groups such as tradespeople are listed on the page, but removal companies are not explicitly mentioned there.
What this means for moving day:
- We ask about the access situation for your address before the survey or the quote.
- We plan the loading window and parking position so that delivery and customs clearance fit together in time.
- If the flat is not yet ready on the handover date, interim storage is possible; details can be found under Storage.
Read more about securing the loading zone under Parking restriction zone. Our article Long-distance move to Switzerland describes the whole process of a trip to Switzerland.
