Salzburg: districts between the Old Town Lehen and Aigen

Salzburg guide
Salzburg: city hills, the Salzach and 24 districts
Areas, housing, daily life
Anyone moving to Salzburg lives between the city hills and the Salzach: the historic centre has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996, surrounded by old suburbs such as Mülln and Nonntal and younger districts such as Lehen, Itzling or Taxham. For the move this means that loading times and bollards apply in the Old Town, while access is usually easier in the outer districts. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly; all services can be found under private move.
Whether you are coming from Berlin, Munich or another city: we are based in Berlin and move people nationwide and abroad. Our guide to the long-distance move Berlin – Salzburg describes the route, driving limits and schedule; this article is about life in the city. What we clarify before moving day in Salzburg
Access, loading time, appointment
In Salzburg's Old Town the pedestrian zone is secured with retractable bollards; outside loading times only those with an exemption permit may drive in. In districts such as Schallmoos, Maxglan or Gnigl the questions are usually about parking position and floor. We clarify these points before the appointment. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). Further destinations can be found under locations.

Salzburg
for newcomers
When moving to Salzburg, what counts is the choice of district, the journeys to work or university and the deadlines after moving in. Anyone coming from Germany hands in the Meldezettel within three days and, for a longer stay, applies for the registration certificate. In the Old Town the removal van needs an exemption permit outside loading times. Our guide brings these steps together for a well-planned moving day.

Frequently asked questions about living in Salzburg
An overview of Salzburg's districts
For spatial planning the city distinguishes 24 districts. The core is the Old Town on both sides of the Salzach, adjoined by the old suburbs of Mülln and Nonntal. Around 1900 Riedenburg and the New Town around the Andräkirche were built; Aigen and Parsch lie to the east at the foot of the Gaisberg.
The former villages of Maxglan, Liefering, Gnigl and Morzg were incorporated between the wars. Liefering borders Freilassing to the north-west, separated only by the Saalach. Taxham and Schallmoos grew in the mid-20th century, while Lehen and Itzling are densely built residential areas north of the Old Town. For the move this means: in the Old Town loading times and bollards matter, in the outer districts it is more about parking position and floor.
Living, studying and working in Salzburg
The Salzburg housing market is considered to be in demand, especially near the Old Town. We deliberately do not quote reliable current rent figures here; compare offers and pay attention to deposit, fixed terms and service charges. Major employers include Porsche Holding and SPAR, both headquartered in the city, the university hospital, tourism and culture; Red Bull is based in the surrounding area in Fuschl am See.
You can study at the University of Salzburg, the Mozarteum University and FH Salzburg, whose main campus is in Puch-Urstein. Trolleybuses run within the city, and Vienna and Munich are connected via the A1 and A8. The festival, the city hills and the lakes in the surrounding area shape everyday life.
What a move to Salzburg costs
Before you plan your move, you should know the approximate costs. Our guide values: 1-room flat from €354, 2-room flat from €605, 3-room flat from €884 and 4-room flat from €1,324. Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.10/km. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey on site.
What the price in Salzburg depends on
First of all, the volume counts – the more household goods, the higher the costs. The distance is charged from €4.10/km. A high floor without a lift and the need for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also increase the effort. Furniture assembly and part load are also worth considering as additional services.

Salzburg: exemption permit, loading times and the Neutor closure when moving
Anyone arriving in Salzburg with a removal van should check the city's traffic rules in advance. According to the City of Salzburg, the Traffic and Road Law Office (Verkehrs- und Straßenrechtsamt) is responsible for traffic exemption permits (Markus-Sittikus-Straße 4, tel. +43 662 8072 3191). The legal basis is § 45 (2) StVO 1960. The city asks applicants to get in touch by phone before applying. It does not state a fixed lead time or fee on its website, so ask the office directly about both and allow a generous buffer. You can also find an overview of our parking restriction zone service.
The Old Town in particular is regulated: according to the City of Salzburg, the pedestrian zone is secured with retractable bollards, and outside loading times only holders of exemption permits may drive in and out. As a basic rule the city gives a loading time of 6 to 11 a.m. from Monday to Saturday and on 8 December. Different times apply to individual lanes, for example 6 to 10 a.m. in Augustinergasse. As the city's website is not entirely consistent on this point, have your time window confirmed in writing.
In addition, the Neutor closure applies: according to the city, the Old Town remains accessible for residents, guests, businesses and delivery traffic, but driving straight through is not permitted. The city service (tel. +43 662 8072 2000) can tell you how the closure affects your appointment.
Salzburg: Meldezettel, registration office and bulky waste after moving in
After moving in, the Meldezettel is due in Salzburg. According to the City of Salzburg, registration must take place within 3 days of taking up accommodation. You need the fully completed Meldezettel and an original passport or identity card. Important: the accommodation provider must sign the original Meldezettel; a tenancy agreement does not replace this signature. For a move within Austria there is no separate deregistration – according to the city it takes place at the same time as registration at the new place of residence; coming from Germany, you deregister at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt).
The registration office (Meldewesen) is at Saint-Julien-Straße 20 and is open Monday to Thursday from 7.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 7.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can reserve an appointment online. So ask your landlord for the signature in good time before you set the moving day.
For leftover household items, the city offers a bulky waste (Sperrabfall) collection, free of charge once a year for up to 6 m³. According to the city, only property owners or property management companies can book the appointment, so as a tenant ask your property management. Alternatively, the recycling centre (Siezenheimer Straße 20) accepts items Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prices are given in the city's price list. The waste service phone line (+43 662 8072 4561) is staffed Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Fridays from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. Our article Living in Salzburg brings together everyday tips for newcomers, and the route is described in the Salzburg long-distance moving guide.
