Salzburg for Newcomers: Mozart's City on the Salzach Just Past Freilassing

Salzburg Newcomers' Guide
Salzburg: An Old Town Below the Fortress, Districts Reaching to the Border
The first few weeks
Salzburg is a state capital and the economic centre of a region that extends into Upper Austria and Bavaria; to the north-west, the city borders directly on Freilassing. The historic centre below Hohensalzburg Fortress has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996, and the Festival has taken place here since 1920. For newcomers from Germany, the move is a change within the EU – household goods need no customs papers. We handle the transport as a home removal.
Important for the first days: you submit the Meldezettel (registration form) to the registration service within three days of moving in; EU citizens staying longer than three months also need a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) from the residence authority within four months. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and organise your move with fixed dates; if the flat is not yet available, interim storage is possible. Route and duration are described on our page Moving from Berlin to Salzburg.

How we prepare your move
Access, Parking, Date, Assembly
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to Austria. Before moving day, we clarify access, floor and parking: according to the city, charges apply in the paid short-stay parking zone from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 7 pm, and the Traffic and Road Law Office answers questions on parking rules. We pad pianos or antiques especially carefully; your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is possible. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we discuss any changes of date openly with you.

What
newcomers should sort out early
This guide takes you through the first weeks after moving to Salzburg: Meldezettel and registration certificate, choosing a district, childcare and getting around by trolleybus and train. Salzburg has 24 districts, from the Altstadt via Nonntal and Riedenburg to Aigen, Parsch, Lehen, Itzling, Gnigl, Maxglan and Liefering. If you come by car, sort out the Parkpickerl and short-stay parking zone; if you have bulky waste, talk to the property management beforehand. This way you start out well informed between the fortress and the Untersberg.

Questions About Living in Salzburg
Salzburg's Districts: From the Altstadt to Liefering
For spatial planning, the city of Salzburg divides its territory into 24 districts. The Altstadt (old town) lies between the Mönchsberg and the Salzach below the fortress, with the Neustadt around the Andräviertel opposite on the right bank; west of the main station lies the Elisabeth-Vorstadt, and north of Mülln, Lehen. Much of the building stock in Aigen, Parsch and Itzling was built after 1900, while Nonntal and Riedenburg lie to the south, along with the Hellbrunn landscape area.
The once independent villages of Maxglan in the west, Liefering in the north-west, Gnigl in the east and Morzg in the south were incorporated between the wars. West of the airport lies Maxglan-West, and Liefering borders directly on Bavarian Freilassing at the Saalach. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and trolleybus line.
Working, Studying and Living in Salzburg
According to Wikipedia, the city's largest business is Porsche Holding, followed by Spar Österreich; then there are the building society Wüstenrot, the importers BMW Austria and Mercedes-Benz Österreich, the haulage company Lagermax and the Stiegl brewery in Maxglan. Overall, Salzburg has a strongly small-business structure, and many employees commute in from the surrounding area. The Paris Lodron University (founded in 1622, re-established in 1962) and the Mozarteum University attract students; 20 student halls offer more than 2,000 places.
We deliberately do not give reliable current rents here – compare offers and service charges yourself and ask to see the latest statement. For registration, the Meldezettel needs the signature of the accommodation provider; according to the city, a tenancy agreement does not replace it.

What Determines the Price for Salzburg
The price of your move depends on several factors: the moving volume, the distance (from €4.10/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A required parking restriction zone can also affect the price. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load also affect the total cost.

Registering in Salzburg: Meldezettel, Registration Service and Online Registration
According to the city of Salzburg, anyone moving to Salzburg registers their residence with the Meldezettel within three days of taking up accommodation. Both the person required to register and the accommodation provider sign; a tenancy agreement does not replace the accommodation provider's signature. Foreign nationals identify themselves with an original passport or identity card. According to the city, registration is free of charge, and when you move there is no separate deregistration at your old place of residence.
- Registration service (Meldeservice): Saint-Julien-Straße 20, 5020 Salzburg, phone +43 662 8072 3530. Open Monday to Thursday 7.30 am to 4 pm, Friday 7.30 am to 1 pm. You can reserve appointments online.
- Two residences: if you keep your previous place of residence as a secondary residence, you need two Meldezettel forms – one for the new main residence and one for the old place as a secondary residence.
- Online: according to oesterreich.gv.at, registering your residence online is possible with ID Austria or EU Login, but requires that you have already been registered in Austria once before.
So if you are new from Germany and have never been registered in Austria, you go to the registration service in person. Registering your residence has legal consequences, for example for vehicle registration and the ORF licence fee. So plan it for straight after moving in.
Everything else on organisation can be found in our guide to moving to Salzburg and in the long-distance moving guide for Salzburg.
Districts, Parking and Bulky Waste in Salzburg
The city of Salzburg runs ten residents' service centres (Bewohnerservice, BWS) in the districts: Aigen/Parsch, Bolaring, Elisabeth-Vorstadt, Gnigl/Schallmoos, Gnigl/St. Anna, Itzling, Lehen/Taxham, Liefering-Nord, Liefering-Süd and Salzburg-Süd. They advise free of charge on dealing with the authorities and on forms, and offer services such as a Repair Café or Klimaticket lending. The Aigen/Parsch BWS, for example, is at Aigner Straße 78.
For parking, the city states a charge of €2.20 per hour in the paid short-stay parking zone from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 7 pm. Residents can apply for an exemption permit for long-term parking near their home; the Parkpickerl has been replaced by a digital Parkpickerl and is checked by number-plate recognition. For questions on parking rules, the Traffic and Road Law Office can be reached on +43 662 8072 3191.
For waste disposal:
- According to the city, the bulky waste service is free of charge but limited to one collection per year and up to 6 m³; only property owners or property management companies may book it.
- The recycling centre is open Monday to Friday from 7 am to 6 pm and on Saturdays from 7 am to 2 pm.
Tenants should therefore clarify with the landlord before a house clearance whether a bulky waste collection will be booked. For neighbouring regions, we recommend the guide to moving to Wels.
