From Berlin to Salzburg: 731 km schedule and paperwork

Long-distance moving guide
Berlin – Salzburg: route, driving times and arrival on the Salzach
Route and schedule
A move to Salzburg takes you from Berlin along the A9 to Munich, then via the A99 and A8 to the border at Walserberg – around 731 kilometres in total. For the lorry that means about ten hours of pure driving time, which is more than the normal daily driving limit. We therefore plan loading day, journey and unloading day as one unit, either with two drivers or with an overnight stop. Packing, dismantling and reassembly in Salzburg are all handled by us from a single source. We quote the fixed price after the survey, whether it is a private move or a business move.
Because Germany and Austria are both in the EU, household goods need no customs clearance; an inventory list still helps with packing and in the event of damage. More important are the deadlines after arrival: the registration form (Meldezettel) within three days, the registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) for longer stays and Austrian registration for the car. We are based in Berlin and move people nationwide and abroad; we handle the return route Salzburg – Berlin as well. All routes are listed under long-distance move destinations, and the route in detail under Berlin – Salzburg.

What we clarify for the route to Salzburg
Drivers, toll, access
Over 731 kilometres, planning is what counts: we decide whether two drivers can cover the route in one day or whether an overnight stop makes more sense, include the Austrian toll and check in advance whether the destination address lies in the Old Town pedestrian zone. Every job receives a fixed price after the survey. Your household goods are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin and also handle routes to other destinations in Germany.

Frequently asked questions about the Berlin – Salzburg route
No customs, but deadlines: paperwork for Austria
As Austria belongs to the European Union, there is no customs clearance for private household goods on a move to Salzburg. An inventory list is still useful: it helps with packing, unloading and in the event of damage. Different rules apply to vehicles – when a car is first registered in Austria, the standard fuel consumption tax (Normverbrauchsabgabe, NoVA) becomes due.
What matters are the registration obligations: you hand in the Meldezettel within three days of moving in. If you stay longer than three months, as an EU citizen you apply for the registration certificate no later than four months after entry. A car with German number plates may only be used for one month after establishing your main residence; after that it needs Austrian registration.
Route and schedule from Berlin-Moabit to Salzburg
From our address in Stromstraße it is around 731 kilometres to Salzburg according to OpenStreetMap routing: via the A100 and A10 onto the A9, past Leipzig, Hof and Nuremberg to Munich, then via the A99 and A8 to the border at Walserberg and the last stretch on the Austrian A1. For a lorry that is around ten hours of pure driving time, about eleven hours with breaks.
EU driving-time rules allow nine hours a day, ten twice a week. We therefore plan with two drivers or an overnight stop on the way and set the unloading date accordingly. We calculate the return route Salzburg – Berlin in the same way.

Salzburg: parking restrictions and Old Town access for the removal van
In Salzburg, the city's Traffic and Road Law Office (Verkehrs- und Straßenrechtsamt) is responsible for road traffic rules (Markus-Sittikus-Straße 4, 5020 Salzburg). On application it can grant exemptions from traffic requirements and bans; the City of Salzburg cites § 45 (2) of the Road Traffic Regulations (Straßenverkehrsordnung) as the legal basis. The city asks applicants to get in touch by phone before applying.
This is particularly important in the Old Town area. According to the City of Salzburg, exemptions concern Kajetanerplatz, Hofstallgasse, Mozartplatz, Nonnbergasse, Festungsgasse, Augustinergasse and the pedestrian zones on both banks of the Salzach, among others. A bollard remote control is needed for these areas, and a separate PDF form is available on the city's website. For driving in, loading, stopping or parking in an individual case you must state the specific traffic restriction and the purpose.
The city gives no information on processing time or fees on this page. Ask early, therefore, as soon as the handover date and moving day are fixed, and get the answer in writing.
How we proceed: together with you we check the address in Salzburg in advance, clarify whether access is restricted and plan the loading window and parking position for the lorry. More on securing the loading zone can be found under parking restriction zone. We describe the particular features of the individual districts in the moving guide for Salzburg.
Salzburg: Meldezettel and bulky waste after moving in
After moving into Salzburg, the Meldezettel is due. The City of Salzburg sets a deadline of three days after taking up accommodation. The Meldezettel needs two signatures: your own and that of the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber), i.e. the landlord or host. According to the city, a tenancy agreement does not replace this signature. If you are the owner, you sign in both roles.
- Bring the completed Meldezettel and an original passport or original identity card.
- The responsible office is the registration office (Meldewesen) at Saint-Julien-Straße 20, 5020 Salzburg; appointments can be reserved online.
- According to the City of Salzburg, registration is free of charge.
You deregister in Berlin separately at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) in Germany.
For old furniture, Salzburg offers the bulky waste service (Sperrabfall) of the municipal waste management. According to the city it is free once a year, up to 6 m³ per year, but is only offered to property owners connected to municipal refuse collection and to property management companies. Tenants should therefore check with the property management beforehand whether an appointment can be booked. Collection is separated into wood, metal and other bulky waste; residual waste and construction waste are excluded.
How we coordinate the move in terms of timing and organisation with your new address is explained in the article Moving to Austria: customs, formalities and process.
