Moving to Kladno: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Kladno
Moving to Kladno: an industrial town 25 km from Prague
Tips & costs
A move to Kladno – Kladen in German – takes you to an industrial town in the Central Bohemian Region, around 25 km north-west of Prague. In the 19th century, coal mines and the Poldi steelworks made Kladno a centre of industrialisation in Bohemia; since 2000 it has been a statutory city. The town is made up of six districts – from the town centre via Kročehlavy and Rozdělov to Švermov. For your international move we clarify access and parking in advance.
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 347 km to Kladno, driven via Dresden and the D8 towards Prague. For the lorry we allow about 5.5 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. As the Czech Republic is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods; on the way, the electronic lorry toll for vehicles over 3.5 t applies. We also handle the reverse route from Kladno to Berlin. More information: Long-distance move to the Czech Republic.

Your move to Kladno: what we do
From Moabit to Kladno
We are a Berlin removal company from Moabit and handle moves to Kladno without having a branch there. That is why we clarify access, floor and carrying routes before moving day – for a flat in Kročehlavy just as for a house in Vrapice. If you want to park the lorry directly in front of the building, according to gov.cz you need a permit for any use of the road that goes beyond normal public use – in Kladno from the city council. You receive a fixed price after a survey; liability is under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More on private moves.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Kladno raises many questions: which district suits you, do you need a visa or customs papers, when do you have to register with the Foreigners' Police, and who approves the parking space for the removal van? This guide introduces the six districts from Dubí to Vrapice and summarises what the Czech Ministry of the Interior and the gov.cz portal say about it. Frequently asked questions about moving to Kladno
The six districts of Kladno
Kladno consists of six districts: the town centre of Kladno, Dubí, Kročehlavy, Rozdělov, Švermov – formed in 1957 from Hnidousy and Motyčín – and Vrapice. The town grew with the coal mines and the Poldi steelworks; many residential areas were built for the industrial workforce.
For your move this means: the town centre and Kročehlavy have many apartment buildings and housing blocks, while the outskirts tend to have detached houses. What matters is the floor, the lift and a parking space for the lorry – we clarify these during the survey. What you need to do after arrival is listed in our checklist for the Czech Republic.
Coal, steel and proximity to Prague
Kladno was first mentioned in 1318 and received its town charter in 1870. The Lucerna coal mine opened in 1850 and the Poldi steelworks in 1889; a mallet and iron were added to the town's coat of arms. The town had a very active labour movement and was a centre of industrialisation in Bohemia. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
At around 25 km from Prague, Kladno lies within the capital's catchment area. For newcomers from Germany: no visa, no customs on household goods within the EU; anyone staying longer than 30 days registers their stay with the Foreigners' Police. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Moving to Kladno: road use and parking space on moving day
If you want to place the removal van directly in front of the building in Kladno or put furniture on the street for a short time, you should check in advance whether the road use needs a permit. According to the Czech public administration portal (gov.cz), any use of a road that goes beyond normal use requires a permit from the competent road traffic authority. As examples, the portal lists, among other things, setting up reserved parking (vyhrazené parkování) and depositing material on the road.
Which office is responsible depends on the type of road:
- Local roads (místní komunikace): the municipal office, so in Kladno the city council
- Class II and III roads: the office of the municipality with extended powers
- Class I roads: the regional authority
The application is submitted by post, in person or electronically and states, among other things, the exact location, the purpose, the duration and a responsible person. For permits of this kind, the portal lists an administrative fee of 100 Kč for a validity of up to 10 days; the authority provides the payment details. Whether and in what form your specific moving day requires a permit is confirmed by the office in Kladno.
So plan the application early and tell the office the size of the vehicle. How we organise long-distance moves to Kladno from Berlin is described in our article on the long-distance move to Kladno.
Registering in Kladno: obligations for EU citizens and crossing the border
For moves from Berlin to Kladno: Germany and the Czech Republic are both in the EU. According to the Ministry of the Interior (mv.gov.cz), EU citizens with a valid passport or identity card may enter and stay; they do not need a visa or a residence permit. If the expected stay exceeds 30 days, however, there is an obligation to register with the Foreigners' Police (cizinecká policie).
For a stay of more than three months, EU citizens can also apply to the Ministry of the Interior for a registration certificate (osvědčení o registraci). According to the ministry it is not a requirement for residence, but it can be useful in everyday life, for example when dealing with authorities or as proof of the length of stay. Family members without EU citizenship who stay longer than three months must, according to the ministry, apply for a temporary residence permit. The gov.cz portal lists the required documents as including the travel document, a photo, proof of health insurance (not required if employed) and proof of accommodation in the Czech Republic.
The following also applies to the transport:
- The customs declaration of household goods described by the Federal Portal concerns moves from a non-EU country into the EU.
- According to eDalnice.gov.cz, four-wheeled vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need an electronic vignette.
An overview of documents and deadlines can be found in our checklist for moving to the Czech Republic.
