Moving to Gdańsk (Danzig): Costs Process & Districts

Destination: Gdańsk
Moving to Gdańsk: Main Town, Baltic Sea and Tricity
explained in brief
With more than 487,000 inhabitants, Gdańsk (German: Danzig) is Poland's sixth-largest city and an important trading location with the country's largest port. Together with the port city of Gdynia and the seaside resort of Sopot, Gdańsk forms the centre of the Tricity metropolitan region. Its historic centre is the Main Town with the Long Market. Anyone planning a move to Gdańsk needs no customs papers within the EU, but must register within 30 days.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 514 km via Szczecin and the S6 to Gdańsk; that is roughly 7.5 hours including a break. Because both countries belong to the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Gdańsk or from Gdańsk back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about the process in the guide to long-distance moves to Poland.

Our part of your move to Gdańsk
Planned in Berlin, arriving on the Baltic coast
We have no branch in Gdańsk; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the Main Town, a flat in Wrzeszcz or a house in Oliwa. We apply in good time for permission to stop outside the new address, following the City of Gdańsk's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of your flat.

For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Gdańsk can be cheaper: your goods share the load space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need a little flexibility on the delivery day; whether a run towards Gdańsk is coming up, we will tell you after your enquiry.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Gdańsk raises many questions: which neighbourhood suits you, how does the lorry get into the Main Town, by when do you have to register and what rules apply to the use of road space? This guide introduces neighbourhoods from the Main Town via Wrzeszcz and Oliwa to Przymorze, explains registration, road space and customs and describes the roughly 514 km journey from Berlin via Szczecin and the S6. Costs, part loads and deregistration in Germany are covered too. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Gdańsk
Gdańsk's districts at a glance
Gdańsk is divided into very different neighbourhoods. The Main Town (Główne Miasto), with its brick Gothic and the Long Market, is shaped by tourism, with narrow lanes and little parking space. Oliwa, with its monastery founded around 1185 and its park, is quieter and popular with families. Wrzeszcz (Langfuhr) is a lively neighbourhood on the SKM line towards Sopot and Gdynia.
In Przymorze, large estates with the characteristic wave-shaped blocks were built in the 1960s; newer residential buildings can be found in several districts. Further out lie neighbourhoods such as Chełm or Ujeścisko-Łostowice. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition. For the move, access, floor and lift are what count.
Employers, universities and quality of life in Gdańsk
Gdańsk is a trading and port city with shipyards; more recently, high technology such as electronics (Intel, for example), telecommunications and IT has been added, along with the oil industry. For students, the University of Gdańsk (Uniwersytet Gdański) and the Gdańsk University of Technology (Politechnika Gdańska) offer a wide range of subjects.
The quality of life is considered high: the Baltic Sea, the historic old town, culture such as the National Museum and the Shakespeare Theatre, and the proximity to Sopot and Gdynia. The SKM rapid urban railway connects the Tricity, and the PKM links Lech Wałęsa Airport. Many newcomers appreciate the lower cost of living compared with Germany.

What you should know about moving prices
Two key factors are the volume of your belongings and the distance – the latter is charged from €4.10/km. The floor, a lift and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also affect the final price. If needed, furniture assembly and a part load complete the offer.

Gdańsk: access zones, identifiers and road space in the Main Town
Gdańsk's roads are the responsibility of the Gdański Zarząd Dróg (ul. Partyzantów 36, 80-254 Gdańsk, tel. +48 58 34 12 041). According to the authority, its customer office is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7.00 to 15.00 and on Wednesdays from 7.00 to 16.30. In its list of procedures, besides parking management, the Zarząd lists a type “T” identifier for access under the traffic signs B-5 or B-18. There is also a separate identifier for the Strefa Ograniczonej Dostępności, the zone of restricted accessibility in the Główne Miasto, i.e. the Main Town. The overview page does not state which requirements apply; we clarify them with the authority before the move.
For the use of road space, the Zarząd gives the following rules in other procedures, for example for installations in the road body: the application must be submitted at least one month before the planned use, and the decision is made within one month, or within two months in complicated cases. Merely submitting an application does not yet entitle you to use the space. We did not find a separate procedure for removal vans on the pages we checked, so we plan in generous lead time.

Oliwa and Gdańsk after the move: registration obligation and papers
Whether Oliwa or the Main Town on the Long Market: we plan the approach individually for every address. During the free survey we clarify where the removal van can stop, how long the loading route is and whether stairs, a lift or a furniture hoist suit the flat. The result is set out in the quote.
After moving in, the obligation to register (zameldowanie) applies in Poland. According to the gov.pl portal, registration takes place no later than the 30th day after moving in at the municipal office (urząd gminy) of your place of residence. Registration is free of charge. Online registration is only possible under certain conditions, including having a Profil Zaufany (trusted profile) and being the owner or holder of a legal title to the flat. The page is aimed at people who change their place of residence or return from abroad.
According to Your Europe, EU citizens from other countries may have to register their residence with the competent authority after three months' stay, usually at the town hall or the police. For this you need an ID card or passport and, depending on your status, further proof.
On customs: the exemption for household removal goods (form 0350) that the customs administration describes on zoll.de concerns moves from third countries into the EU. We clarify during planning which papers your move from Berlin to Gdańsk needs. More on this under Moving to Poland: customs, formalities and process and Moving to Poland: costs and planning.
