Moving to Feldkirch: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Feldkirch
Moving to Feldkirch – living where four countries meet
Guide
Feldkirch lies in the Vorarlberg Rhine valley, right on the border with Liechtenstein and close to Switzerland. Above the medieval old town towers the Schattenburg castle, surrounded by the districts (Fraktionen) of Altenstadt, Gisingen, Levis, Nofels, Tisis and Tosters. Many residents commute to Liechtenstein, and Feldkirch's state hospital (Landeskrankenhaus) is the largest hospital in Vorarlberg. Because the town is in demand, the move should be planned early – from the registration form (Meldezettel) to access in the old town.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 760 km via the A9, A7 and A96 to Lindau and on via the A14 to Feldkirch; by lorry that takes about eleven and a half hours including breaks, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for a move from Feldkirch back to Berlin. Whether an old building in the town centre or a house in Tisis: we clarify access and parking space beforehand. The route in detail: Moving Berlin – Feldkirch.

From
planning to assembly
When moving to Feldkirch you should start flat-hunting early, because the market is tight due to the proximity to the border. After moving in, you register within three working days at the citizens' service (Bürger:innenservice) in the town hall. In the old town, a road closure may be needed for the removal van. If you bring a car, you register it in Austria within one month. We plan the journey, loading and reassembly and tell you which deadlines run after moving day – from the Meldezettel to vehicle registration.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Feldkirch
The districts of Feldkirch at a glance
Feldkirch is divided into several distinctive districts: the historic old town with the Schattenburg attracts lovers of urban living, while Levis and Gisingen are considered lively residential areas with good infrastructure. Tosters and Tisis offer rather quiet, family-friendly residential areas with detached houses, while Nofels impresses with its closeness to nature and views of the Alps.
If you are looking for peace and green spaces, you will find them in Tisis or Nofels, while young professionals and students often prefer the central location of Levis or the old town. The short distances within the town make a move between districts straightforward and usually possible within one day.
Employers, housing market and quality of life in Feldkirch
Feldkirch benefits greatly from its location in the four-country corner between Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein – many residents commute to employers such as Hilti or various banks in Liechtenstein. The Landeskrankenhaus Feldkirch is also one of the largest employers in the region and offers numerous jobs in healthcare. For those interested in education, the University College of Teacher Education Vorarlberg (Pädagogische Hochschule) and good connections to the FH Vorarlberg in Dornbirn provide attractive study options nearby.
The housing market in Feldkirch is tight because of the proximity to the border, and rents are usually above the Austrian average, especially in the old town and areas close to the centre. Nevertheless, the town convinces with a high quality of life: medieval charm, short distances, good rail links to Zurich and Innsbruck and the Alps right on the doorstep for leisure activities.
Your move – the costs to expect
Before you decide on a moving date, you should know the costs: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €579, 3-room flat from €894, 4-room flat from €1,344. For a house or a villa we always prepare an individual quote. For long-distance moves a price from €4.20/km applies. Request a free survey now.
Factors that determine the moving price
First comes the volume – the more household goods, the greater the effort. The distance is charged from €4.20/km. The floor and a lift also play a role, as does a possible parking restriction zone. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a part load.

Road closures, parking and permits in Feldkirch: the municipal police as the point of contact
The Town of Feldkirch does not have a dedicated page for moving-day parking restrictions. For the use of public space, it refers to the "Straßen-Sperre" (road closure) page: the permit is issued by the municipal police (Stadtpolizei), and the application must be submitted at least two weeks before the start. There is an online form and a PDF application "Benützung für verkehrsfremde Zwecke" (use for non-traffic purposes). If traffic facilities such as signs, pavements, cycle paths, traffic lights or parking spaces are altered, a usage permit from the municipal works depot (Bauhof) is also required. The town does not state any fees there.
Check with the municipal police (telephone +43 5522 304-1222, [email protected]) whether your moving day falls under this rule. This applies especially to the old town: according to the town, it lies in parking zone 1 (€1.70 per hour). In zone 2, parking costs €1.10 per hour or €6.40 per day. Around Domplatz, Herrengasse, Sparkassenplatz, Busplatz and Montfortgasse you may park for a maximum of 60 minutes, and in Vorstadt, Mühletorplatz and Rösslepark for up to three hours. Residents with their main residence in zone 1 or 2 can buy a residents' card for €240 a year.
We plan loading times and routes with you in advance and support you with the parking restriction zone. The route from Berlin is described in the article Long-distance move Berlin – Feldkirch.
Meldezettel and bulky waste in Feldkirch: deadlines, town hall and recycling centre
According to the Town of Feldkirch, after moving in you must register or re-register within 3 working days. The Meldezettel form is signed by the resident and the landlord (for example tenant and owner). At the town hall (Schmiedgasse 1–3, 6800 Feldkirch) you present the signed Meldezettel and an official photo ID. Registering and deregistering is free of charge. The citizens' service is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm, on Wednesdays until 5:00 pm; on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons appointments are available by arrangement.
Two options help when clearing out. Bulky waste is accepted at the recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum, Kapfstraße 109a, telephone +43 5522 304-1851), where you pay by weight. Opening hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 to 12 and 1 to 5 pm, Fridays from 8 to 12 and 1 to 6 pm and Saturdays from 8 to 12. Alternatively, the town collects household quantities of up to 3 m³ on the residual waste collection day if you mark the bulky waste with a bulky waste sticker (Sperrmüll-Marke) and put it out no earlier than 6 pm the evening before and no later than 7 am. One sticker covers a maximum of ½ m³ or up to 35 kg. Items not accepted include waste wood, scrap metal and old electrical appliances.
