Long-distance move Berlin – Feldkirch: route process & deadlines

Feldkirch at a glance
Long-distance move to Feldkirch – from Berlin to the Ländle
Step by step
A move to Feldkirch takes you to the Vorarlberg Rhine valley, on the border with Liechtenstein and close to Switzerland. Between Berlin and the town below the Schattenburg castle lie around 760 km and a national border – but there are no customs on household goods within the EU. What matters are the Austrian rules: the registration form (Meldezettel) within three working days, registering your car within one month, and the EU pet passport for pets. We take care of the survey, packing, transport and reassembly of your furniture in the new flat – including storage if the handover is postponed.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 760 km via the A9 to Nuremberg, then via the A6, A7 and A96 to Lindau and via the Austrian A14 to Feldkirch. By lorry that takes about eleven and a half hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so we drive with two drivers or stay overnight on the way. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route to Berlin. More on this: Moving Berlin – Feldkirch.

What we take care of on your move to Feldkirch
Fixed price after a survey
We have no base in Vorarlberg; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify access, floor and parking space in Feldkirch in advance – in the old town with its narrow lanes we use a suitable vehicle. Whether a road closure is needed, we discuss with the town. We quote the fixed price after the survey or a video appointment; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible for valuable items. We coordinate the date with the key handover.

Everything
for your move
A move to Austria raises many questions: flat-hunting, the obligation to register, vehicle registration, tolls on the journey. We tell you which steps are due when and give tips on costs and process. More on cross-border moves can be found under international moves; we plan the route itself with the statutory breaks. On Austrian motorways, the GO toll applies to lorries over 3.5 tonnes, and the vignette to smaller vehicles.

Frequently asked questions about a long-distance move to Feldkirch
Customs & formalities when moving to Austria
As Feldkirch is in Austria and both countries are EU members, traditional customs formalities for your removal goods usually do not apply at all. Nevertheless, you should register your new residence with the relevant registration office within three days of arrival, using the so-called Meldezettel (registration form). It is also important to register your vehicle in Austria on time, which must be done no later than one month after the move, including the standard fuel consumption tax (Normverbrauchsabgabe, NoVA).
For pets, the EU pet passport with a valid microchip and rabies vaccination applies; no quarantine is required between Germany and Austria. You should also plan early for registering with social insurance and the tax office, so that there are no gaps in insurance cover or tax obligations. Write down the deadlines early so that no important formality is forgotten on your move to Feldkirch.
Living in Feldkirch – how the long-distance move works
Feldkirch lies in the far west of Austria, right on the border with Liechtenstein and Switzerland, and impresses with its medieval old town and proximity to the Alps. The town is particularly attractive for commuters to Zurich, Vaduz or Bregenz, which also increases demand for housing and thus the need for moves. With us, your long-distance move begins with a free survey or online recording of the volume, followed by scheduling including the border crossing.
We then take care of packing, loading, transport and professional assembly on site, so that you can concentrate on the flat handover and your new surroundings. For narrow old-town lanes and limited parking in Feldkirch, we plan a suitable vehicle and short carrying distances. That way your start in the Ländle is relaxed and well organised from the outset.
How we calculate your moving price
Every move is different, but the following prices serve as a guide: a 1-room flat costs from €359, a 2-room flat from €605, a 3-room flat from €915 and a 4-room flat from €1,269. Larger properties such as a house or villa receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves a price per kilometre from €3.80/km applies. The quickest way is a free survey.
Moving costs in plain language
How much your move costs depends largely on the volume and the distance (from €3.80/km). The floor, a lift and a parking restriction zone also play a role. For extras such as furniture assembly or a part load we are happy to prepare a separate quote.

Feldkirch: parking in the old town and permits for moving day
On the town's parking page, Feldkirch's old town belongs to the paid Zone 1. According to feldkirch.at, parking there costs €1.70 per hour; charges apply Monday to Friday 8–12 and 13–18 and Saturday 8–12. For Domplatz, Herrengasse, Sparkassenplatz, Busplatz and Montfortgasse the town states a maximum short-stay parking time of 60 minutes; in Vorstadt, Mühletorplatz and Rösslepark it is a maximum of 3 hours. This is important on moving day if the van cannot park right outside the door.
The parking page says nothing about parking restrictions or loading; for that, the town refers you to the municipal police (Stadtpolizei, tel. +43 5522 304-1222). Under "Straßen-Sperre" (road closure), feldkirch.at also states that a permit is required for work on or next to public roads and for non-traffic use of them.
- The application should be submitted at least 2 weeks before the start.
- Permits for non-traffic purposes go to the municipal police.
- The page does not state a fee.
The page does not explicitly list a parking restriction for removals. We therefore recommend calling the municipal police early and allowing the same two-week lead time. More on the procedure in our guide to the parking restriction zone and on the destination country under Long-distance move to Austria.
Feldkirch: registration within three working days and bulky waste stickers
According to the Town of Feldkirch, after moving in you must register within 3 working days at the citizens' service (Bürger:innenservice) in the town hall (Schmiedgasse 1–3). Registration is free of charge. You should bring the completed Meldezettel signed by both tenant and landlord, as well as an official photo ID. Newcomers receive a welcome pack. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 7.30–13, Wednesdays until 17; on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons by appointment only (tel. +43 5522 304-1230).
When unpacking and sorting out, the town's bulky waste system helps:
- Collection: bulky waste goes out on the street on the residual waste collection day, at the earliest from 6 pm the evening before and by 7 am on collection day. Every item needs visible bulky waste stickers (Sperrmüll-Marken); one sticker covers up to 1/2 m³ or 35 kg. They are available at outlets that sell rubbish bags. Household quantities of up to 3 m³ are accepted.
- Electrical appliances are not included.
- Recycling centre (Altstoffsammelzentrum): Kapfstraße 109a, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8–12 and 13–17, Fridays 8–12 and 13–18, Saturdays 8–12; bulky waste is charged by weight (tel. +43 5522 304-1851).
- The repair café takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 9 am to 12 noon; collection dates are listed in the waste calendar and the waste app.
