Moving into an attic flat in summer: stairs sloping ceilings and heat under the roof

Living under the roof
Getting to the top without overheating
Well measured
An attic flat has two special features in summer: the sun heats up the roof, and the stairwell gets warmer and warmer towards the top. Anyone carrying heavy furniture up to the fourth or fifth floor on a hot day soon notices this. On top of that come sloping ceilings, which not every wardrobe fits under. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we ask about the floor, lift and width of the staircase during the survey and plan the process so that the heaviest items are upstairs early.
Measure the new flat before the move – not just the floor area but also the height of the wall below the slope. Large wardrobes can often only be carried through narrow stairwells when dismantled. We quote the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³). On request we take care of dismantling and reassembling the furniture, so that everything upstairs is in its place and nothing has to be carried twice.

Attic flat? Plan early
Give the floor and measurements
When you enquire, tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and whether the new flat has sloping ceilings. Then we will plan enough helpers, an early start and the dismantling and reassembly of large wardrobes. That way even a move under the roof on a warm day is perfectly manageable. Call us on 01625978461 – the quote is non-binding.

How we plan a move under the roof
Early, dismantled, measured
When moving into an attic flat, the order counts: heavy and bulky items go upstairs in the cool morning hours, boxes follow later. We dismantle large wardrobes beforehand so that they fit through the stairwell, and reassemble them upstairs. During the survey we check the width of the stairs, the banisters and the landings. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and work at a fixed price after a survey – more on our move with assembly.

How to succeed with a move under the roof
Attic flats are popular, but in summer they are a challenge when moving. These six tips help ensure that furniture fits under the slopes and nobody overheats on all those stairs – whether you move with us or with friends.
Measure the slopes
Check the stairs
Up early
Cool the flat beforehand
Small boxes
Breaks at the top
Part load for individual items
Is only a wardrobe or a bed going to the attic flat? Then a part load may be suitable: the piece of furniture travels on a route together with other orders. Give the floor and staircase situation in advance so that enough time is planned for carrying.

Why
it is so warm at the top
Under the roof it is warmer in summer than on the lower floors: the sun heats up the roof surface, and warm air rises in the stairwell. For the move this means: the higher the flat, the more important an early start and breaks become. On top of that come sloping ceilings, which limit the space available for tall furniture. If you measure beforehand which wardrobes fit where, you save a lot of carrying back and forth on moving day. How to plan the day by the clock is covered in the article A summer move without the midday heat.

Questions about attic flats
Sloping ceilings and stairs: measure beforehand
In an attic flat, it is not just the floor area that matters but the height. Measure the height of the wall below the slope (the knee wall) and the point at which the slope reaches the height of your wardrobe. Compare this with the measurements of your furniture and draw a simple layout plan. That way it is clear on moving day which wardrobe goes where.
Also check the stairwell: width, tight turns, banisters and landings. Large wardrobes, beds and corner benches can often only be carried up when dismantled. With our move with assembly we dismantle them and reassemble them upstairs.
Heat under the roof: carry early, cool beforehand
Under the roof it is usually warmer in summer than on the lower floors, and warm air rises in the stairwell. So schedule the heaviest items for the first hours of the day, when it is still cool in the building. Boxes and light furniture follow later.
If you can get into the flat beforehand, put up blinds or blackout curtains before the move and give it a thorough airing early in the morning. Set up a shady room upstairs with water for breaks. With lots of stairs, smaller, lighter boxes help: books in small boxes, bedding and cushions in large ones. That way every load stays manageable, even on the fifth floor.

How is the price calculated?
The moving price is calculated primarily from the volume and the distance (from €3.95/km). Further factors are the floor, whether there is a lift and any no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone). Additional services such as furniture assembly and a part load round off the offer.
