Moving in foul weather

Rain, snow, frost: how to keep the move dry and safe

in any weather

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and allows more time for carrying and loading in rain and frost.

A move in winter or in persistent rain places particular demands on boxes, furniture and floors. Wet cardboard loses its strength, wood swells, and stairs and pavements become slippery. So pack in sturdy boxes, protect upholstered furniture with film and lay decorator's fleece or old blankets in the entrance. In December it is already dark in Berlin by around 4 pm – start early in the morning.

For your private move we allow more time in wet and icy conditions and pad furniture with blankets. Details of the scope of services can be found under private move. In frost, drain the washing machine and hoses beforehand; only switch electronics on once they are at room temperature. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

WET AND FROST

What counts in bad weather

More time, more protection

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves within the city and as a long-distance move. For a move in bad weather: carry more slowly, pad furniture with blankets, keep paths short. Check with the property management whether the pavement and courtyard have been cleared and gritted. A parking restriction zone directly in front of the building shortens the walk through rain or snow.

Boxes against the wet

Sturdy boxes that are not overloaded withstand moisture for longer; books and papers also go into film or plastic boxes.

Protect floors

Decorator's fleece, cardboard or old blankets in the hallway catch snow and slush – in the old and the new flat. That way the stairs stay safe underfoot too.

Mind the frost

Drain the washing machine, dishwasher and hoses beforehand; do not leave plants and liquids overnight in the cold loading space.

Let electronics acclimatise

Only switch on TVs and computers once they are at room temperature – otherwise condensation can form inside the device. A few hours of patience is usually enough.
WEATHERPROOF

Six tips for rain and winter

With a little preparation, a move in rain, snow or frost is no more dangerous than in summer. These six points protect household goods, floors and everyone who carries – whether you move with friends or with a moving company.

01

Start early

In winter it is dark shortly after 4 pm. Start early so that unloading is done in daylight; lamps for the stairwell and cellar help.
02

Clear the paths

Ask the property management whether the pavement, courtyard and entrance have been cleared and gritted – at the old and the new address.
03

Parking restriction

If the lorry stands directly in front of the building, the walk through rain and snow is short; in Berlin the signs go up at least 72 hours beforehand, so apply early.
04

Dress properly

Sturdy shoes with a good tread and gloves with grip for all helpers; wet hands and smooth soles are the biggest risk when carrying.
05

Water out

Drain the washing machine, dishwasher and aquarium equipment beforehand; residual water can damage pumps and hoses in frost.
06

Know the liability rules

A moving company is liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for expensive items, additional insurance is worthwhile. Report damage immediately.

The budget-friendly alternative

A shared load is possible in winter too: individual pieces of furniture travel on a trip that is already on the route. Because the delivery day depends on the trip, the new flat should then be accessible and the path to the door cleared and gritted.

WINTER AND RAIN

Packing,
carrying, driving in the cold

What counts in each phase

Whether it is a long-distance move on wintry roads or a short move within the city: in rain and frost, packaging, short paths and time buffers count. On the motorway, snow and ice can lengthen the journey, so do not plan the arrival too tightly. What statutory liability covers and when additional insurance makes sense is explained in our article Moving insurance: what is covered.

Packing

Do not overload sturdy boxes, put paper and textiles in film or boxes, upholstery in protective covers. Drain appliances containing water beforehand. That way your private move survives a wet day too. Label boxes with a waterproof marker so that the writing stays legible.

Carrying

Have paths cleared and gritted, cover floors with fleece or cardboard, parking restriction zone directly in front of the building. In icy conditions, two people carry what one would otherwise carry – and more slowly than in summer. Breaks in the warm keep hands flexible.

Driving

In black ice or slush, motor vehicles may only be driven with suitable tyres (§ 2 Abs. 3a StVO). If you hire a van yourself, check this on collection; on long routes, plan a time buffer and check the weather the evening before.

FAQ

Questions about moving in rain and winter

Rain, ice, frost, electronics, plants, costs and liability – briefly answered.
Yes, a move in the rain is quite manageable with preparation. Sturdy boxes, film for upholstery and papers, decorator's fleece in the hallway and a parking restriction zone directly in front of the building keep paths short and belongings dry. Expect it to take a little longer, because carrying is more careful in the wet.

How to prepare for a move in the rain

Good rain protection starts with the packaging: use sturdy boxes, do not make them too heavy and also protect papers, books and textiles with film or in plastic boxes. Mattresses and upholstered furniture go into protective covers. Non-slip shoes for everyone who carries are essential on wet ground.

Allow more time for loading and unloading, because work has to be slower in the rain. Lay decorator's fleece or old blankets in the entrance so that the hallway and stairwell stay clean and safe underfoot. That way your move in the rain goes ahead without unnecessary stress.

Winter move: points to bear in mind

In snow and ice, the access road and pavements in front of the building must be cleared before carrying starts. Ask the property management who clears and grits, and keep some grit handy yourself on moving day. Pack plants and liquids frost-proof or take them with you in the warm car.

Drain the washing machine and hoses beforehand, and let electronics warm up after transport before you switch them on. If there are severe weather warnings, agree the date with the moving company in good time; what applies then is stated in the quote. That way your winter move stays safe and stress-free.
