Remaining leave, overtime, flexitime: how to cover your moving day

Time account instead of annual leave

Unsere Firma Moving with a full-time job: plan remaining leave in good time, take time off in lieu for overtime and use flexitime for appointments.

Many working people have more free time in their account than they think: remaining leave from the current year, accumulated overtime and flexitime credit. If you add these up before the move, you often do not have to take a single day off your summer holiday. The order matters: remaining leave is tied to statutory deadlines, while the rules in your contract apply to overtime. Cover the actual moving day with remaining leave and short appointments beforehand with flexitime. Our private move service takes care of carrying, transport and assembly.

Whether overtime may be taken as a whole day off is governed by your employment contract, collective agreement or works agreement – clarify this before you fix the date. We quote the fixed price after the survey; then you know whether one day is enough or whether a second day for unpacking makes sense. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive within the city and nationwide.

Fix the day first, then take time off

Fixed price after a survey, firm date

Call us on 01625978461 and give us two or three possible days. After the survey you receive a fixed-price quote and a binding date – with it you can apply for remaining leave or time off in lieu specifically for that one day. Saturday dates are popular with working people, so ask early.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

YOUR TIME IN VIEW

Less leave, more done

One moving day instead of a moving week

The more we take on during moving day, the less time you have to deduct from your account. If we dismantle, carry, transport and reassemble your furniture, one day off is usually enough for a move within Berlin. We fix the moving date bindingly after the survey and quote the fixed price in advance. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). We have a base in Berlin-Moabit; destinations with their own page can be found under our locations.

Packing service

If we pack the day before, your remaining leave is saved for the moving day itself – you work as normal while your boxes are being filled.

Fixed date

A binding moving date after the survey is the basis for your leave request or the planned time off in lieu within your team.

Assembly service

The wardrobe, bed and desk are standing by the evening of moving day – so you do not need an extra day off for assembly.

Parking zone

On request we apply for the no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) – in Berlin at the district office (Bezirksamt), around two to four weeks in advance. One less trip to the authorities for you.
WELL ALLOCATED

How to allocate your free time

Remaining leave, overtime and flexitime follow different rules. If you combine them correctly, you can cover the move without touching your annual leave.

01

Remaining leave first

Under § 7 BUrlG, leave must generally be taken in the current year – so allocate any outstanding days to the moving day first.
02

Clarify overtime

Whether extra hours may be taken as a day off is set out in your employment contract or collective agreement. Ask your employer before booking, not afterwards.
03

Flexitime for appointments

Key handover, meter reading, viewing: short appointments like these often fit into flexitime, as long as you keep to the core working hours.
04

One day is often enough

If a moving company takes care of carrying and assembly, one day off is usually enough for a move within the city instead of a whole week.
05

Plan a buffer

Half a day on the following day helps if lamps, the internet or the last boxes are still waiting. It can often be taken from your flexitime account.
06

Inform your team

Say early on which days you will be absent – then the time off in lieu can be coordinated with colleagues, cover and ongoing projects.
A FEW ITEMS

Part load: a date with leeway

Ideal for a few items

If only a few pieces of furniture or boxes are moving, a part load can be cheaper: your belongings travel with other orders on the same route. The time window is more flexible than with your own transport – so plan flexitime or time off in lieu for it rather than a fixed day of leave.

Using
your free time wisely

We take care of every detail

The ninth part of our series Moving for working people is about your time account: by when remaining leave must be taken, when overtime may be taken as a day off and which appointments fit into flexitime. If you know these items, you only apply for as much leave as necessary and save your annual leave for relaxing. Before talking to your team, do a quick calculation: outstanding days of leave, overtime balance and flexitime credit – usually that is enough for the moving day and a buffer. If a new job means moving to another city, read more under long-distance moves.

Allocating remaining leave

Whether it is a private move, your parents' senior move or your children's student move: outstanding days of leave from the current year are the first reserve – otherwise they can lapse under the Federal Leave Act (Bundesurlaubsgesetz).

Taking time off in lieu

With a packing service, furniture transport and small transport, the move shrinks to one day – which, if your contract allows it, you can cover with overtime instead of leave.

When the company moves

If your employer itself is moving – office move, company move or public authority move – the company does the planning. Privately, for individual items, a part load or furniture taxi can help, coordinated with your flexitime.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about remaining leave, overtime and moving

Answers on leave deadlines, time off in lieu, flexitime and appointments with the authorities around your move.
If a moving company takes care of carrying, transport and assembly, one day off is usually enough for a move within the city. First check whether you still have remaining leave, and ask whether overtime may be taken as a day off. Pack important boxes on the evenings beforehand, so that only the transport is left on moving day.

Remaining leave: by when you have to take it

Under § 7 (3) of the Federal Leave Act (Bundesurlaubsgesetz), leave must generally be taken in the current calendar year. Carrying it over into the next year is only provided for urgent operational or personal reasons – in that case the remaining leave must be taken in the first three months, i.e. by the end of March. Employment contracts or collective agreements may contain more generous rules. If you are moving in autumn or winter, outstanding remaining leave is therefore the obvious reserve.

Schedule the moving day so that it does not clash with leave blackouts in your team. How the day itself runs is shown in our article Moving day hour by hour.

Overtime and flexitime for individual appointments

Whether you may take overtime as a whole day off depends on your employment contract, collective agreement or a works agreement – there is no general statutory right to time off in lieu. So ask early whether the moving day can be taken as time off in lieu.

Short appointments such as a flat viewing, key handover or meter reading often fit into flexitime; keep an eye on the core working hours. You can also schedule your appointment at the registration office (Bürgeramt) this way – registration must take place within 14 days of moving in.

What moving day costs

How much we manage in one day – and how much free time you need – depends on the size of your flat. Our prices start at €349 for 1 room, followed by €579 for 2 rooms, €899 for 3 rooms and €1,279 for 4 rooms. For houses or villas you receive an individually calculated quote. If you are moving to another city, we charge from €4.10 per kilometre. The best way to find out more is during a free survey.

What determines price and time required

First of all, the volume counts – the more household goods, the greater the effort. The distance is charged from €4.10/km. The floor and lift also play a role, as does a possible no-parking zone. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a part load.

Services that spare your time account
