DECIDING WITH A PLAN

Weather warnings and moving

When the forecast reports black ice

Replan in good time

Unsere Firma Weather service warning levels, an alternative date and liability: how to decide before moving day.

The German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) issues warnings at four levels: yellow (weather warning), orange (significant weather), red (severe weather) and violet (extreme severe weather). For ice, level 1 means isolated freezing moisture, while level 3 already means black ice from freezing rain on all roads and paths. For a winter move this means: yellow is everyday business with a little more caution, red is a serious reason to postpone the date. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we discuss such situations with you early on instead of improvising in the morning.

What matters is a plan B before the weather turns: who needs to be informed if the date is uncertain – landlord, parking restriction company, helpers? What does the contract say about postponement? For a private move we clarify this during the survey. You can find more about the process under Private move. We give you the fixed price after the survey.

RELIABLY COORDINATED

How we deal with weather warnings

Inform early instead of improvising

In the days before your winter move we follow the forecast and the warnings of the German Weather Service. If black ice or heavy snowfall is looming, we call you before it is too late to reschedule helpers, the key handover or the parking restriction. Together we decide: a later start, a different order or a new date. Our team works in sturdy footwear with non-slip mats and carries more slowly on ice. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide.

Packing service

If everything is already packed thanks to our packing service, a move can more easily be postponed by a day when the weather changes.

Office move

For an office move we set an alternative date for severe weather in advance so that your business is not left with half-packed workstations.

Senior moves

With a senior move we would rather postpone by a day in black ice – falls on the pavement are particularly dangerous for older people.

Furniture transport

With furniture transport on icy paths, the risk to people and furniture rises. At the red warning level we do not carry heavy items.
SAFETY BEFORE SPEED

Our rules in severe weather

A moving day can be postponed; a fall on the stairs with a wardrobe cannot be undone. That is why we have clear rules when the German Weather Service reports ice or severe weather – agreed with you and in good time before moving day.

01

Follow the warnings

In the days before the move we check the warnings of the German Weather Service. You can view them yourself for your area in the WarnWetter app.
02

Call early

If black ice is looming, we get in touch in good time – not just on the morning. That leaves time to reschedule helpers and the parking restriction.
03

Decide together

A later start, a different order or a new date: we discuss the options with you and decide together what is safest for your move.
04

Plan an alternative day

A buffer day before the end of the tenancy makes it possible to postpone the move in severe weather without jeopardising the handover.
05

Clarify costs beforehand

What a weather-related postponement costs is set out in your contract. Ask about it before you place the order – not on the morning itself.
06

Document damage

Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery and hidden damage within 14 days (§ 451f HGB). Photos help with the settlement.
SMALL LOADS IN WINTER

Part load with a flexible time window

Share load space, cut costs

For single pieces of furniture or a few boxes, a part load is an affordable solution. Because several jobs are on one tour, a severe weather warning affects all stops. In winter, plan for a wider time window; if the tour is postponed, we will inform you in good time.

WEATHER WARNING

despite a severe weather warning?

All about your move

The thirteenth part of our winter series is about the decision nobody likes to make: does the move go ahead if black ice is forecast? We explain the warning levels of the German Weather Service, show what a plan B looks like and what the law says about liability for damage. If you have a long way to go, you should also check the weather at your destination – more under Long-distance moves.

Understanding warning levels

Yellow, orange, red, violet: if you know the levels, you can calmly decide on a private move, senior move or student move whether to go ahead as planned, start later or postpone the date.

Preparing a plan B

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small removals, a move is easier to postpone. The alternative day, contacts and contract should be clarified in advance.

Liability and damage

For an office move, company relocation, part load or furniture taxi, liability under the HGB applies at €620 per cubic metre. Report damage on time, in writing and with photos.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about weather warnings and moving

Answers on warning levels, postponement and liability.
Yes, a winter move is perfectly feasible. Away from the turn of the month and public holidays, dates are often easier to get. What matters are cleared paths, a time buffer and a plan in case the German Weather Service reports black ice. Before booking, clarify what applies in the event of a weather-related postponement.

The weather service warning levels and your moving day

The German Weather Service distinguishes four warning levels. For ice this means: level 1 (yellow) warns of isolated freezing moisture or frost, level 2 (orange) of significant ice with severe traffic disruption, level 3 (red) of black ice from freezing rain on all roads and paths, and level 4 (violet) of extreme black ice.

As a rule of thumb for a winter move: at yellow, work continues with cleared paths and a little more time. At orange, a later start is worthwhile once gritting services have been out. At red or violet you should postpone the date – carrying on black ice is not reasonable for anyone. You can read more about rain, snow and ice in the article Moving in rain and winter.

Plan B and liability for damage caused by ice

Before booking, clarify what applies in the event of a postponement and note down whom you then need to inform: landlord, parking restriction company, helpers. A buffer day before the end of the tenancy takes the pressure off.

The removal company is liable for your belongings under the HGB at €620 per cubic metre (§ 451e). It is only exempt from liability for circumstances it could not have avoided even with the utmost care (§ 426 HGB). Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery and hidden damage within 14 days. More in the article Removal insurance.

The key moving prices in brief

In brief: 1 room costs from €349, 2 rooms from €579, 3 rooms from €879 and 4 rooms from €1,344. If you live in a house or villa, you always receive an individual quote after a survey. For long-distance moves a price per kilometre from €4.25 applies. Feel free to use the free survey to discuss all the details.

What influences the moving price

The volume of your belongings and the distance (from €4.25/km) form the basis of the calculation. Added to this are the floor, lift and any parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). For furniture assembly and a part load separate rates apply.
