Electricity, internet, broadcasting fee: who is named on which contract?

Transferred cleanly

Unsere Firma Flat-share contracts when moving: broadcasting fee, electricity, internet, household kitty and every flatmate's re-registration.

In a flat share (WG), many contracts are in a single name: electricity, internet, sometimes the broadcasting fee. If exactly that person moves out, someone has to take over – otherwise they keep paying or the flat share is left without a connection. So clarify before the move who the contracting party is. We handle the transport at a fixed price after a survey, so the costs are fixed before the flat share splits them.

We pack the kitchen, living room and private rooms separately and label every box with a name and destination. How we move individual rooms or whole flats can be read under Private move. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB; § 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. That leaves you time for switching providers and the registration office (Bürgeramt).

More time for formalities

A flat-share move comes with plenty of formalities: reading meters, moving the internet contract, sorting out the broadcasting fee, booking an appointment at the Bürgeramt. So that you have time for this, we take care of packing, dismantling furniture and transport – at a fixed price after a survey. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB, and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also drive nationwide for long-distance moves; destinations with their own page are listed under Locations.

Packing service

While we pack the kitchen and living room, you read the meters and cancel or transfer the contracts.

Labelling

Every box gets a name and destination room – the router, documents and folders end up safely with the right flatmate.

Separate dates

Anyone moving out earlier gets their own date – matching their notice and the end of their contracts.

Furniture transport

We dismantle wardrobes and beds and reassemble them at the new place, so you do not spend the first evening with tools.
CONTRACTS IN THE FLAT SHARE

Which contracts change when you move

When several flatmates share the costs of a flat-share move, the ongoing contracts should also be transferred cleanly. These six points belong on the list before the first person moves out.

01

Broadcasting fee

It is charged once per flat, however many people live there (€18.36 a month). If the payer moves out, someone else registers the flat.
02

Electricity and gas

If the contract is in the leaver's name, someone else takes it over or signs a new one; note the meter reading on moving day.
03

Internet

Contracts often run longer than the tenancy. Clarify who keeps the router and continues the connection.
04

Household kitty

Joint accounts or kitties are settled on the move-out date, with any balance or shortfall divided according to shares.
05

Re-registration

Everyone registers themselves with the registration office within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG) – in Berlin at the Bürgeramt.
06

Mail forwarding

Book mail forwarding with Deutsche Post in good time before the move; your letters are then forwarded for the period you choose.
FEW BELONGINGS

Part load for a flat-share room

For small budgets

For students on a smaller budget in particular, a part load is often worthwhile: your household goods travel together with other jobs. That saves costs when only one room with little furniture is moving and the date has a few days' leeway; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB here too.

Transfer
contracts, re-register correctly

What needs doing besides the boxes

This part of our series Moving tips for flat shares is about the paperwork: which shared contracts are in whose name, who takes them over, and how does everyone re-register correctly? How to transfer electricity, gas and internet is explained in the article Transferring electricity, gas and internet; the broadcasting fee is covered in Updating the broadcasting fee. If flatmates move out on different dates, every move-out should include a quick look at the flat share's contract list. That way you keep track of the contracts as well as the boxes.

The flat share's contract list

Write down which contract is in whose name: rent, electricity, internet, broadcasting fee, household kitty. That way the flat share sees immediately what changes when a particular flatmate moves out.

Packing while you re-register

With a packing service and careful furniture transport, you have time in moving week for providers, meter readings and the Bürgeramt appointment – without the boxes being left undone.

Small move-outs

If only one person moves out, a part load or a furniture taxi is often enough for their things. What matters more then is that they hand over their flat-share contracts properly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on contracts and re-registration in a flat share

Answers on the broadcasting fee, landlord confirmation, re-registration, contents insurance and deposit.
The simplest approach is to split by room size or number of people, with shared furniture divided equally among all flatmates. Our fixed price makes the calculation even easier, as everyone involved knows from the outset exactly what the total cost of the flat-share move will be and how it can be divided fairly among them.

Shared contracts: who is named where?

In a flat-share move, electricity, internet and the broadcasting fee are often in the name of a single flatmate. Make a list early on of which contract is in whose name, what notice period it has and who takes it over. The broadcasting fee is charged once per flat, regardless of the number of residents.

On the move-out date, note the meter readings and pack the router and contract documents in a separate, labelled box. That way every flatmate knows what they are taking over.

Re-registration and landlord confirmation for every flatmate

After moving in, every flatmate must register themselves with the registration office within two weeks (§ 17 BMG). For this they need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, § 19 BMG) – from the landlord or, in the case of a sublet, from the main tenant.

If several people move in on the same day, one confirmation can contain all the names. Settle the deposit in writing as well, especially if not everyone moves out at the same time.

These factors set the price

When moving, it is mainly the volume and the distance (from €4.20/km) that determine the price. Floor and lift affect the staffing required, while a no-parking zone takes care of the parking situation. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can be booked as options.
