Moving as separated parents

Separation and moving
Moving after separation: custody, household goods, children's room
with a plan
A separation often means that two new households are created – usually under time pressure and emotional strain. If you share custody, decisions of considerable importance for the child require the agreement of both parents (§ 1687 BGB). Moving the child to another city usually counts as one. If you cannot agree, the family court can transfer the decision to one parent (§ 1628 BGB).
For children, continuity matters most: familiar furniture, cuddly toys and a children's room set up quickly in both households. The youth welfare office (Jugendamt) offers advice on separation, contact and custody. We handle the transport neutrally according to your joint list; with our private move service we plan the process so that the children's room is set up first. That way a difficult phase becomes a structured fresh start.

Fixed price for your move after separation
Survey, fixed price, clear division
During a separation, certainty in planning is especially important: after a survey we give you a written fixed price – for a small individual move as well as for clearing the shared flat. For household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. Call us without obligation on 01625978461.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we handle – and what you settle
Logistics with us, division with you
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle the move after separation purely logistically: dismantling, transport and assembly according to a list you have agreed on beforehand. Who gets which furniture is for the two of you to decide – we transport neutrally and do not get involved. If both parents move out, we plan two loading points or two dates. If some items have not yet been allocated, storage can buy time; the conditions are stated in the quote. We state the fixed price after the survey.
List before the move
Children's room first
Two households
Bridging a gap
Six points for parents
For children, a move after a separation is often the most visible part of the change. These six points help you stay on the safe side legally and give the children stability – in both households.
Agreement
Family court
The child's main residence
Nursery and school
Take familiar things
Two homes
Only one room moving out?
If only a few pieces of furniture or personal belongings are going to the new flat, a shared load can be cheaper than a lorry of your own: your goods travel on a trip that is already on the route. A time window applies instead of a fixed delivery day – plan the essentials for the first few days, especially for the children.

Clarify,
divide, move
Whether it is a long-distance move to another city or a change within Berlin: in separated families, both parents have to agree on where the children live, contact and household goods. How children cope with the change and what helps them is described in our article Moving stress in children. If one parent moves to another region, you will find routes from Berlin under long-distance moves. The sooner the arrangements are in place, the calmer moving day will be.

Questions about moving as separated parents
Child-friendly move planning after separation
When separated parents move, the children's well-being is the focus. Involve them early, for example in packing their own room – this can reduce anxiety and give a sense of security. Familiar items such as cuddly toys or favourite furniture should be packed carefully and set up first.
Under joint custody, clarify beforehand where the child will mainly live in future; a move to another city usually requires the consent of both parents. Plan the children's rooms in both households so that they are set up quickly and a sense of continuity develops.
Dividing household goods and furniture fairly
One of the biggest challenges in a separation move is dividing the shared household goods. Make an inventory together beforehand and decide what goes to which household; the moving company then transports neutrally according to this list. That creates clarity and avoids arguments on moving day.
If not everything has been allocated yet, temporary storage can buy time; duration and costs are stated in the quote. That way you can decide calmly without postponing moving out of the shared flat.

Cost factors in detail
