Moving with a dog: tips

Guide: dogs & moving
Moving with a dog: furniture in the lorry, dog in the car with you
Tips for owners
For a dog, moving day is above all loud and confusing: open doors, strangers, boxes. When moving with a dog, we therefore agree with you which room will be cleared last, so that your dog can stay there behind a closed door – or spends the day with friends straight away. We carry the furniture, you look after the dog: a removal company is not liable for live animals under § 451d HGB, so the dog travels with you. You can read how we organise the private move there.
To make sure your dog does not slip out, we agree before the first box which doors stay closed; a sign on the room door shows all carriers where the dog is waiting. We charge for the move at a fixed price after a survey. For your removal goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is possible. If you are moving within Berlin, report the new address to the dog register afterwards – free of charge.

Furniture with us, dog with you
A calm process for owner and dog
We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, when moving with a dog, take care of packing, transport and reassembly. We do not transport the dog itself: it travels with you in the car, in a secured crate or strapped in. We clarify in advance which room stays as a retreat until the end and when the front door has to be open. We charge a fixed price after a survey; for your removal goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

The first days
Little to move? Part load!
With a shared load, several consignments share one transport, which saves costs over long distances. Because the furniture then arrives within a time window, your dog should be well looked after until then – with friends, in a dog boarding kennel or with you in the new flat.

From
planning to assembly
Whether within Berlin or as a long-distance move: your dog travels with you, not in the furniture van. On long routes, plan regular breaks for drinking and toilet stops, and keep water, bowl and lead to hand. If the move changes your municipality, dog tax comes into play – how that works at the old and new place of residence is explained in our article transferring dog tax.

Frequent questions
Preparation: how moving day with a dog goes smoothly
Get your dog used to moving boxes and noises a few days before the move with a dog, so that the situation feels less strange on the day itself. Keep food, water, lead and a familiar toy to hand so that your dog is looked after during the commotion. On moving day it is best to leave your dog with a familiar person or in a separate, quiet room.
That way you avoid doors standing open and your dog bolting in a panic. You should also have an up-to-date collar with an address tag and a photo ready in case of emergency. Our team also takes care to secure entrances and exits while furniture is being carried.
Arrival: settling the dog into the new flat
After the move with a dog, your four-legged friend needs time to explore the new surroundings in peace. First set up a familiar retreat with basket, blanket and bowls, so that your dog can find its bearings quickly. Avoid too many unfamiliar visitors in the first few days, so that your dog does not feel even more overwhelmed.
Walk around the immediate area together so that your dog gets used to new smells and paths. Fixed feeding and walk times give additional security and make settling in noticeably easier. This way your dog usually finds its way around its new home within a few days.
Calculate your move
This is how you can easily calculate your move yourself:
- €339 – starting price for a 1-room flat
- €584 – starting price for a 2-room flat
- €905 – starting price for a 3-room flat
- €1,279 – starting price for a 4-room flat
- individual quote – for a house or villa
- €4.15/km – for long-distance moves
For a binding quote we recommend a free survey.
What affects the costs of your move?
The main cost drivers include the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged from €4.15/km. The floor and lift also have an effect – without a lift the effort increases significantly. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also be useful. We also offer furniture assembly and a shared load.
