Moving with a large family

Large family
Moving with a large family: many rooms, many children, one plan
Well organised
A move with a large family differs from an ordinary family move above all in quantity: several children's rooms, bunk beds, a large dining table, lots of toys and clothes in many sizes. On top of that come more appointments – nursery, school, paediatricians – and more post to authorities. If you sort out early, give each child a colour for their boxes and put the children's rooms in a fixed order, you keep track even with many people.
During the survey we record how many rooms and pieces of furniture are moving, which beds will be dismantled and how long the carrying routes are. This determines the number of helpers, the lorry size and whether one day is enough; this is stated in the fixed price. Children's rooms stay standing until last and are set up first in the new flat. What we take on during the move is described on the page private move; we dismantle and reassemble bunk beds and wardrobes as part of a move with assembly.

Four things that are different with many children
And how to plan for them
We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, when moving with a large family, take care of carrying, transport and dismantling and reassembling the furniture. With many children, four things change: the quantity, the order, the journey with all the children and the number of offices you need to tell your new address. For damage to your removal goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space; for expensive furniture additional insurance makes sense.

Six tips for large families
These points make a move with a large family easier – for the parents and for the children, who find their room again in the evening. Most of them only take a little preparation in the weeks before the move.
Involve the children
Childcare for the little ones
Favourite things last
Documents in one box
Secure a holiday date early
Bunk beds with anti-tip protection
Bringing individual pieces later
Not everything has to move on the main day: the bunk bed from the holiday home or furniture that will only fit after a renovation can follow as a shared load – on a tour with other jobs and with a time window instead of a fixed date.

Plan,
pack, re-register
When moving with children, many topics play a role; with a large family they multiply. How to transfer nursery and school registrations is explained in the article transferring nursery and school; how children can take part in the move, in involving children. How to make the new flat safe is covered in childproofing your new home. For long distances there is the overview long-distance moves.

Frequent questions
Checklist for moving with many children
Start by sorting out: clothes the children have grown out of, toys nobody uses any more, duplicate household appliances. Each child gets a colour used to mark their boxes and furniture parts – so everyone finds their room in the new flat. Older children pack themselves, younger ones hand over a box of favourite things, which is loaded last.
Important documents such as birth certificates, vaccination records, health check booklets and school reports go in a folder that you transport yourself. Nurseries and schools at the new place of residence usually require proof of measles protection (§ 20 para. 9 IfSG); keep it to hand.
Furniture transport for large households
Large families often have more beds than rooms: bunk and loft beds, children's beds, plus a large dining table and lots of storage space. This furniture is dismantled, the screws collected in labelled bags and everything reassembled in the new flat according to a layout plan – children's rooms first.
With extensive household goods a survey is important: afterwards the number of helpers and lorry size are fixed, and whether one day is enough. For damage we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space; report visible damage no later than the day after delivery. On request we take furniture that is no longer needed away for disposal.
