Pets on moving day: a quiet room, a safe journey, a new address

Tips for owners

Unsere Firma Professional on-site moving solutions with secure planning, flexible services and on-time execution.

For animals, a move with pets is above all one thing: loud and confusing. Strangers, open doors and disappearing furniture make cats run off and dogs restless. The most important decision is therefore made beforehand: where will your pet be while things are being carried? The safest option is a day with friends, family or at a boarding kennel or cattery. If it stays at home, it goes into an empty, closed room with water, a blanket and a litter tray – with a sign on the door saying “Please keep closed”. Our movers take this into account, but do not look after the animal.

For the journey: animals never belong in the moving lorry, but in the car with you – in a sturdy, well-ventilated pet carrier that is secured against slipping. Never leave the animal alone in the car in warm weather. At the new home, first set up a quiet room before the animal goes into it. Afterwards, change the address with the pet register for the microchip and register the dog for dog tax. How we plan the private move so that one room stays free until the end is something we discuss during the survey.

KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR PET

What we pay attention to on moving day

Consideration yes, pet-sitting no

We at Beste Umzug Unternehmen are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and factor pets on moving day in from the start: the room in which your pet is waiting is cleared last, we keep the flat and front doors closed as far as possible, and we do not carry out noisy work such as taking furniture apart right next to the animal. Looking after, feeding and transporting the animal remain with you – which is also better for the animal, because it knows you. You receive the fixed price after the survey.

Quiet room

An empty, closed room with water, a blanket and a litter tray – it is cleared last, with a notice on the door.

Doors closed

Doors are often open while things are carried. Cats slip out in seconds – so the animal stays behind a closed door or out of the house.

Never in the lorry

Animals do not travel in the removal van but with you in the car – in a secured, well-ventilated pet carrier.

First room at the destination

At the new home, first set up one room with bowl, basket and litter tray, then put the animal in – only later the whole flat.
BEFORE AND AFTER THE MOVE

How we support you

Six points owners should clarify around a move with pets – from the house rules in the new flat to the address in the pet register. Much of this can be done weeks before moving day.

01

Check your tenancy agreement

A blanket ban on dogs and cats in a standard-form tenancy agreement is invalid (BGH VIII ZR 168/12); still clarify keeping pets with the landlord beforehand.
02

Getting used to the carrier

Put the pet carrier out, open, weeks in advance, with a blanket and treats – then it is not a strange place on moving day.
03

Ask the vet

For very anxious animals, ask the vet beforehand what helps; never give or dose sedatives on your own initiative.
04

Emergency bag

Food, water, bowls, lead, poo bags, cat litter, medication and vaccination record in a bag that travels with you in the car.
05

Change the address

Enter the new address with the pet register for the microchip, so that a runaway animal finds its way back to you.
06

Register your dog

After the move, register the dog for dog tax at the new place of residence and deregister it at the old one – see Re-registering dog tax.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Shared load: furniture yes, animals no

The budget-friendly alternative

If you have only a few items, a shared load can be cheaper – a cat tree, dog basket or aquarium cabinet can come along too. But animals themselves never belong in a moving or shared-load lorry: they travel with you by car, bus or train. As the shared load arrives within a time window, set up a makeshift spot for the first few days.

EUROPE-WIDE MOVES

Your
move – fully organised

One team, every service

Every animal needs something different: you will find detailed tips in the articles Moving with a cat and Moving with a dog. On a long-distance move, plan breaks for water and exercise and drive the animal yourself. If you are moving to another EU country with a dog, cat or ferret, the animals need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and the EU pet passport. We discuss aquariums and terrariums in advance during the survey.

Planning safe and relaxed

A good checklist coordinates dates, helpers and materials early. That way your home move, senior move or student move in Berlin stays transparent, structured and markedly easier to control.

Furniture, boxes, transport routes

With a suitable packing service, careful furniture transport and a flexible small transport, ways can be shortened, damage avoided and even narrow approaches in Berlin managed cleanly in logistical terms.

Costs, timing and special cases

Clear time windows and suitable solutions for an office move, company move, authority move, part load or furniture taxi create reliable processes and better plannable total costs in Berlin.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about pets on moving day

Preparation, accommodation, journey, equipment, settling in and stress – answered briefly.
Get your pet used to the carrier early and pack an emergency bag with food, water and familiar items. That way you avoid additional stress on the actual moving day. A separate, quiet retreat during the furniture transport is also advisable, so that your pet feels safe and does not panic.

Preparation: how moving day with a pet goes well

Ideally, prepare your pet for the change a few days before the move by leaving pet carriers open in the room and getting your animal used to them. Pack a small emergency bag with food, water, a lead and familiar items such as a blanket or toys, so that your pet is not unsettled even more on moving day itself.

It is best to leave your dog or cat with a trusted friend or in a separate, quiet room during the actual transport. That way you prevent your pet from panicking or even running away because of open doors and lots of strangers.

Settling in at the new flat

After the move, you should give your pet enough time to explore the new surroundings calmly, rather than exposing it to all the rooms at once. First set up a familiar retreat with the usual basket, bowls and toys, so that your pet feels safe more quickly.

Cats in particular benefit from getting to know just one room at first before they are allowed to explore the whole flat. For dogs, long walks in the new neighbourhood help them get to know territorial boundaries and new smells.

Price overview for every type of home

No matter how big your move is – we have fair prices for every situation. We move a 1-room flat from €369; for 2 rooms the price is €594, for 3 rooms €889 and for 4 rooms €1,279. For houses and villas an individual quote always applies. If you are moving over greater distances, you pay from €4.10/km for long-distance moves. The first step is always a free survey.

The moving price in detail

Besides the volume and the distance (from €4.10/km), structural conditions such as the floor and lift play an important role. If a parking restriction zone also has to be set up, this increases the price. Additional services such as furniture assembly and shared load can be booked at any time.
