Childproofing your new home

Moving with children
Child safety starts on moving day
The first week
A move with children needs more planning, because curiosity and the urge to move around do not take a break on moving day. Open doors, stacked boxes, loose cables and tools are sources of danger for toddlers. It is best for them to spend the day with grandparents or friends. With a private move, it pays to set up the children's room first so that the children have a familiar, safe place in the evening. The bed, favourite toys and night light belong in the last boxes to go on the lorry and the first to be unpacked.
After moving in comes the detailed work: fix wardrobes and shelves to the wall against tipping, secure sockets, fit locks to windows and balcony doors, and block off stairs with gates. Also check whether smoke alarms are installed – in Berlin, the building regulations require them in living spaces other than kitchens and in hallways that serve as escape routes. Pack the childproofing items in a separate box that is unpacked first.

What counts on moving day
Children looked after, paths clear
Child safety starts on moving day: while things are being carried, doors stand open, boxes pile up and tools lie around. It is safest if toddlers spend the day with a carer. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), reassemble cots, chests of drawers and shelves on request and quote the fixed price after the survey. You fit the childproofing itself – sockets, windows, stair gates – in the first few days.

Six safety measures for your new home
Most accidents in a new home happen because the safety devices from the old flat are still in boxes. These six points belong in the first week – ideally in this order, before the children explore the new flat on their own.

Prepare,
move, secure
There is more to a move with children than sockets: labelling boxes properly, setting up the children's room first, practising the route to nursery and school. Securing furniture, windows and stairs is important, and so are breaks for the children on a long journey. How we dismantle and reassemble furniture is explained under Move with assembly; routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions about a childproof home
Secure sockets, cables and edges
Straight after moving in, all freely accessible sockets should be secured, especially in the living room and children's room and close to the floor. Loose cables belong behind furniture or in cable ducts, and power strips out of reach, so toddlers cannot pull on them.
Sharp furniture edges can be made safer with corner guards, especially on glass tables and sideboards. Empty moving boxes, plastic film and tape should not be left lying around – film can be dangerous for toddlers. Pack these safety items in a separate box that is opened first.
Anchor furniture and make rooms childproof
Heavy wardrobes, shelves and chests of drawers should be secured with wall brackets, because children like to climb them. In the children's room, an anti-tip fixing for all larger furniture is advisable straight away during assembly; choose wall plugs to suit the wall.
Doors, windows and stairs also need attention: finger guards, lockable window handles and stair gates. Also check the smoke alarms – in Berlin they are required in living spaces other than kitchens and in hallways that serve as escape routes.
Moving costs made transparent
| Type of move | Starting price |
|---|---|
| 1 room | €349 |
| 2 rooms | €605 |
| 3 rooms | €915 |
| 4 rooms | €1,299 |
| House/villa | individual quote |
| Long-distance move | €3.90/km |
Transparency matters to us – which is why we recommend a free on-site survey.
Calculating the moving price: these factors count
The price is based on the volume, the distance (from €3.90/km) and the number of floors. An existing lift reduces the effort, a parking restriction zone increases it. A shared load also affects the final amount.
