Moving with children

Changing school and moving: how your child settles in well

Guide

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and sets up the child's room first on moving day.

A change of school is often the hardest part of a move for children: a new class, new teachers, a new way to school. For parents it starts with organisation. Get in touch with the new school or the responsible education authority (Schulamt) early, because each federal state sets its own responsibilities, deadlines and catchment areas. Ask which documents are needed – usually the last school report, often a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) for the new address. Because registering at the registration office (Bürgeramt) is only possible after moving in and must be done within two weeks, it is worth coordinating the timing of the move and the school enrolment.

A change is easiest at the start of a school year or half-year; if the move falls in the holidays, the child has time to settle in. Involve your child in the planning, visit the new school beforehand and set up the child's room first. What we handle during the move is listed under Private move; tips on involving children are in the article Involving children.

What we handle during a family move

So that parents have time for their children

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a family move, handle dismantling, transport and reassembly of the furniture, plus packing and the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) on request. We set up the child's room first on moving day so that your child sleeps in familiar surroundings on the first evening. School enrolment, re-registration and talks with the new school stay with you – and you have more time for them when others do the carrying. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for very valuable items, additional insurance is possible.

Children's room first

Bed, desk and favourite shelf are the first things set up on moving day, so your child can sleep in their room and do homework in the evening.

School things to hand

School bag, books and exercise books go into their own clearly labelled box, which is loaded last and unloaded first.

Date in the holidays

If the move falls in the holidays, the child starts at the new school well rested; enquiring early pays off, because these dates are booked up quickly.

Less strain on parents

If you do not have to carry things yourself, you have time for a school visit, enrolment and getting to know the new surroundings with your child.
STEP BY STEP

Six steps to the new classroom

A change of school during a move is easier when parents know the steps. These six apply almost everywhere; however, each federal state sets its own deadlines and responsibilities – if in doubt, ask the education authority. Talk openly with your child about the change; children who are allowed to help plan usually settle in more easily.

01

Get in touch early

Call the new school or the responsible education authority as soon as the new address is fixed, and ask about places and deadlines.
02

Gather your documents

Last school report, birth certificate, vaccination record if applicable and a registration certificate for the new address – ask exactly what is required.
03

Inform the old school

Deregister your child at the old school and ask for documents on their learning progress; this makes it easier to join the new class.
04

Re-register

After moving in, register the family at the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks; the school often needs the registration certificate too.
05

Practise the way to school

Walk or travel the new way to school together before the first day, so your child arrives safely and without stress.
06

Make a farewell possible

A small farewell party with the old class and contact details of friends help children experience the change as a fresh start.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only the children's room is moving?

Shared load for individual pieces
With a shared load, several consignments share the loading area on the same route. For individual pieces of furniture or boxes, this lowers the costs considerably. You get a time window instead of a fixed date; what your child needs for the start of school – bed, desk, school things – is better moved on a fixed date.

Changing school in three phases

A change of school during a move has three phases: preparation with enrolment and farewell, moving day with the child's room first, and settling in at the new school. How to pack and set up the child's room cleverly is explained in the article Child's room last and first. If the move takes you to another federal state, you will find information under long-distance moves. And how to involve children in every phase of the move without overwhelming them is shown in another article in the guide – with ideas for every age from nursery to sixth form.

Beforehand

Contact the new school, gather documents, inform the old school, schedule the move in the holidays and let your child help plan: these steps turn the change of school into a whole-family project and take the pressure off.

On moving day

The child's room is packed last and set up first, and school things stay to hand. With furniture transport and a parking restriction outside the door, parents have time to look after the children instead of lugging boxes.

Settling in

Re-registration within two weeks, practising the way to school, first day of school: plan the first few weeks calmly, ask the teacher how your child is settling in and stay in touch with old friends – this helps with settling in. Patience is part of it.

FAQ

Questions about changing school when moving

Planning, documents, feelings, date, federal state, child's room and costs – answered briefly.
Start as soon as the new address is fixed. How much lead time school enrolment needs depends on the federal state and the point in the school year – ask the new school or the education authority. For the move itself: tenants give three months' notice, and holiday dates should be requested early.

Enrolling at the new school in good time

Get in touch with the new school or the responsible education authority as soon as the new address is fixed. The federal states regulate responsibilities, deadlines and catchment areas differently, so ask directly which steps are needed and which documents are required. Usually these are the last school report and proof of the new address.

Because registering at the registration office (Bürgeramt) is only possible after moving in, agree with the school which proof is sufficient beforehand – for example the tenancy agreement.

Moving the child's room stress-free

Pack the child's room last and set it up first. Favourite toys, cuddly toy and school things go into a box of their own, which your child can label themselves. On moving day, younger children are in good hands with grandparents or friends.

By the evening the bed should be up and the room should already look a little like home. You can set up the rest together in the first few days. Hang up a few familiar pictures together; that helps more than a perfectly arranged wardrobe.
