Moving with a baby

Moving with a baby
Moving with a baby: authorities, nursery and a calm moving day
Well prepared
A move with a baby has two sides. The practical side: the nursery stays standing until last and is set up first in the new flat, the baby is best off spending moving day with grandparents or friends, and a bag with nappies, bottles and a change of clothes is always to hand. The bureaucratic side: as well as registering with the registration authority, the new address has to go to the Family Benefits Office (Familienkasse), the parental allowance office (Elterngeldstelle) and the health insurer – and anyone who needs a nursery place has to see to it early.
We take care of carrying, dismantling and reassembling the cot, changing unit and wardrobes, and set up the nursery first in the new flat. We secure tall furniture such as the changing unit to the wall with the anti-tip device supplied, if the wall allows it. The official steps and applications remain with you – which ones they are is set out below. What we take on during the move is described on the page private move.

Plan moving day around your baby's routine
Fixed price after a survey – nursery down last, up first
During the survey we decide the order of dismantling so that the nursery stays standing until last. After that we quote a fixed price for your move with a baby covering all agreed services, from dismantling the cot to reassembling the changing unit with its anti-tip device. Call us on 01625978461.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Four offices that need your new address
In addition to registration
We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, when moving with a baby, take care of carrying, transport and assembly. Registering with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in applies to the whole family; parents register their child at the same time (§ 17 BMG). After that, however, not every office automatically knows your new address – you should inform these four yourself, ideally in the first week after moving in. Make a list with your child benefit number, the parental allowance office's reference number and your insurance number. For damage to your removal goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space.

Six tips for moving day
For a baby, moving day itself is above all loud and unfamiliar. With these six points it stays manageable for your child and for you – and the nursery is set up by the evening.
Organise childcare
Baby bag to hand
Nursery last
Baby seat in the car
Tip-over protection
Sockets and cables
Only baby furniture to transport?
If the cot is coming from the grandparents or the changing unit is following from the old flat, a shared load can be cheaper than a separate trip: the item travels with other jobs on the same tour. In return you get a time window instead of a fixed date.

Before,
on the day, afterwards
When moving with a baby, the tasks fall into three phases: applications and planning beforehand, a calm moving day and re-registrations afterwards. How to transfer nursery and school registrations when moving is explained in the article transferring nursery and school; how to make the new flat safe, in childproofing your new home. Why the nursery is dismantled last and set up first is covered in children's room last and first.

Frequent questions
The right preparation for a relaxed move with a baby
Start with the things that need lead time: a nursery place at the new place of residence, a paediatrician nearby and childcare for moving day. In Berlin you apply for the childcare voucher at the youth welfare office of your district, no earlier than nine and no later than two months before the desired start. From the first birthday your child is entitled to a childcare place (§ 24 para. 2 SGB VIII).
Pack the rooms your baby needs least first, and leave the nursery standing until last. A baby bag with nappies, bottles and a change of clothes travels in your own car.
After moving in: report and secure
Within two weeks of moving in, you register with the registration authority; you register your child at the same time (§ 17 BMG). You report the new address to the Family Benefits Office yourself (§ 68 EStG), as well as to the parental allowance office, which remains responsible after the move (§ 12 BEEG).
Check the new flat before your baby starts crawling: secure sockets, tidy away cables, fix tall furniture with an anti-tip device.
A price guide for your move
As a guide for your move planning: 1 room from €339, 2 rooms from €605, 3 rooms from €894, 4 rooms from €1,299. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves, from €4.10/km also applies. The calculation is most accurate after a free survey.
Assessing the moving price correctly
To estimate the moving price correctly, we look at the volume, the distance (from €4.10/km), floor and lift, and any parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) that may be needed. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load round off our offer.
